General Discussion / Re: OS/4 Kernel trouble
« on: September 06, 2016, 11:11:38 pm »
I attached the MPTable info. How do I patch ver 3.23.02 of ACPI.PSD? I have 1 CPU and ACPI.PSD indicates one as well. I'll also attach OEMHLP$ using IBM kernel and ACPI.PSD.

There is no patch for 3.23.02 for now,  but you may try to patch and run ACPI.PSD ver 3.22.06 -  the patch is here http://gus.biysk.ru/os4/Patches/AcpiPsdPatches.rar

Do not forget to add /ST=0 to psd command line (PSD=ACPI.PSD  /ST=0) in config.sys

Pls also show output from PCI.EXE

also test test_DMC1.zip

  I tried the OS/4 kernel on my laptop for the first time today, and while it boots, I get a repeating desktop startup sound, and no devices with IRQ's above 15 work (sound, network, USB). It is the same with or without the /APIC switch. Has anyone run into this before? One thing unusual about this laptop - when using the Netlabs ACPI.PSD, the hardware manager shows ACPI on IRQ 10. Everything else I have seen uses IRQ 9. Maybe related to the issue? I'll attach the kernlog file.

Probably it's a bug in the MPtable, pls show an output from http://gus.biysk.ru/os4/tools/mptable-2.0.12.zip

try  to run with ACPI.PSD (patched and with /ST=0)

how many CPU do you see under ACPI.PSD ?

The system detected an internal processing error at
location ##1800:1b4e - 0003:1b4e
60000, 2008

10860673
Internal revision 14.105_SMP

It is not "Trap", it is "Panic" -  kernel recognized condition in which it is impossible to continue execution of its own code.

Shown Panic is called "DevHlp Usage Error" and in the original kernel it may happen for quite a few reasons.

At the same time, I saw a positive report about running OS/2 on similar mobo  - Asrock Q1900B-ITX (I do not know how important the letter "B" is) but with OS/4 kernel http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Phoenix_OS/4#OS.2F4_Tested_Hardware_List

I do not think that it was working because of using OS/4  - so keep trying to change you settings.

... i7 gave very little additional performance...

Try to compare DIVE -> Video bus bandwidth on Celeron and on i7.
This mark is most important for screen update speed in Panorama.

Sorry, Doug, I forgot to tell that I'm not going to encourage or convince you to use OS/4 :)
But your post could create a wrong picture for other people, so I started to argue with you just to show to OTHERS that your statements are mostly not correct.

I use high shared memory for the OpenOffice DLLs, but that only works when I also use the Quick Start feature, otherwise when OO closes, the machine hangs, or crashes, about 7 times in 10. I have the same problem when trying to use high memory with Firefox, but it doesn't have a method to keep the DLLs loaded, so I use them loaded low. I have tried other things, but they just don't work when loaded high, or the machine crashes when they unload. I know that somebody has done some work on that problem, but it obviously needs more work.

Yes, there is such an issue in the original kernel but it's absent in OS/4 kernel.

Quote
I never change DC1 to original and everything works fine. So it's hard for me to consider it a mess.

Sorry, but I can't use any unsupported software that affects normal operation. If I do, I can't tell if that causes the problem, or if the software that I am testing is causing the problem. It is not smart to cause confusion, so I don't do it.

Funny. DC1 from OS/4 is the only supported version :)

Then, there is the legal grey area, which needs to be cleared up before OS/4 can even be considered by a lot of people.

If someone considers himself as absolutely white, he may use the official kernel and patch it  himself to OS/4 level but not use the already patched kernel that is being distributed. The patch will be provided for such persons upon their request.

It was mostly having to mess with DOSCALL1.DLL,
99% of time I run OS/4 and I have installed DC1 supplied with it. If sometimes I have to run the original kernel, I never change DC1 to original and everything works fine. So it's hard for me to consider it a mess.

It just got to be too much effort to mess with all of that stuff
What do you mean ?

FWIW, lower shared memory space is now my biggest problem. Does OS/4 improve on that?
Low shared memory starts from the highest address of private memory and ends at approx. 512M border. I figure that your large windows executable files rise the upper edge of the private memory quite high and that leaves too little space for shared memory.

Please tell me what kernel could help in this case?

OS/4 may not offer much for this issue - it offers to programs approx. 512Kb more low shared than the original kernel.

I would suggest to analyze and minimize using the low shared memory in favor of using high shared memory. Some DLLs allow loading to high shared memory with no harm.

I did play with OS/4 for a while, but once it started interfering with my normal system...

Interesting, how did it interfere with you "normal" system ?

Applications / Re: Firefox 38.8.0 for OS/2 Beta 7
« on: May 29, 2016, 12:57:31 am »
Try backing up your previous FF 38.x.x and unzip the new zip file over the top of it. That fixed the DLL error messages for me. 38.8 is working well here so far.

I would never suggest to go this way.  Third part dlls have to reside in proper place = %UNIXROOT%\usr\lib\  but not in FireFox dir.

this is a list of dlls supplied with 38.2.1:
freebl3.dll
mozalloc.dll
mozsqlt3.dll
nspr4.dll
nss3.dll
nssckbi.dll
nssdbm3.dll
nssutil3.dll
plc4.dll
plds4.dll
smime3.dll
softokn3.dll
ssl3.dll
xul.dll

this is a list supplied with 38.8.0 :
mozalloc.dll
mozsqlt3.dll
xul.dll

The rest have gone to  %UNIXROOT%\usr\lib\

By coping new ver of FF over old  you force  FF to use dlls supplied with old ver - what is  completely wrong.

How are you going to know that you are using proper ver of dlls ?

Right scenario is:
1) update/install dlls according to FF README, using ANPM or YUM
2)
.. unzip firefox*.zip after renaming my old firefox directory.

The working installation is on a SATA disk and the other is IDE. Would that make a difference?

if your SATA disk is served by OS2AHCI.ADD   it will not work with IDE disk

Programming / Re: New OS/4 kernel :: SVN4227

Beyond just that very selfish reason above, here is a more precise one: if the /ST=0 parameter in the ACPI.PSD drive does in fact get ignored, and the authors have set some arbitrary value for the size of the stack, then I would consider this to be a defect. So if the OS4 team patches the binary to actually correct this behaviour then I'm actually questioning why the "core" OS2 maintainer team refuses to fix the code itself?

The case is a bit more complicated. OS/2 kernel offers to PSD very small stack (2672 bytes). It is ok for os2apic.psd and  it looks like not enouph for ACPI.PSD. That is why ACPI.PSD does some actions to increase PSD stack offered by the kernel. It is not an easy thing since PSD stack is organized on per processor base. At the same time ACPI.PSD recognizes /ST key to set desirable PSD stack size on user demand.  ACPI.PSD does not allow the user to set stack size = 0 (as it is really senseless), but if one finds a way (the patch helps) to set "ST=0", ACPI.PSD will not go through the procedure of increasing PSD stack offered by the kernel.

OS/4 starting from svn ver 4250 has unified PSD/interrupt stack with 12k size thus ACPI.PSD has no need to increase it. At the same time, "not easy" ASPI.PSD procedure for increasing PSD stack, simply spoils internal data structure of OS/4 kernel. That is way ACPI.PSD has to be patched and /ST=0 has to be used in order to work with OS/4.

With due respect to you, I can't agree with all your statements.

Suggesting anything to the OS4 team is lost ground.

On the contrary. OS/4 team will gladly hear reasonable advice, suggestions, bug reports, etc.

They have given NO reason whatsoever why they removed something that worked just fine and that is WELL DOCUMENTED to exist.

May be one day trace facility will be re-enabled.

What they do is wasting time but of course they can waste all the time they want, after all, it's their time.

There are people who use OS/4 and find it useful. Moreover, there are several HW where the original kernel wasn't able to run at all(in any configurations with any loaders), only OS/4 could run there. Thus OS/4 isn't that much of a waste of time as it may seem.

It remains a secret of the OS4Krnl developer team why they removed the trace and strace facilities.
Without that none of the USB drivers can be traced as they are making good use of OS/2 built in tracing mechanism. Tracing is about the only chance for a developer to do offline analysis of problems surfacing at the user's site (unless you want to recode your own tracing facility).

I have never use trace facilities, same time KernPrintf was sufficient  to debug clock03 and some other drivers.

1) booting with OS4krnl produces a hard trap right after PMSHELL (I can not tell at all what is going on, so this looks like a candidate for a COM port debug, I need to get this organized though)

Similar stuff sometimes happens on  my computer as well. In the comport log it looks like this:

Code: [Select]
DelayHardError SYS3171: 4 string(s):
 Pid 0020  Tid 0001  Slot 0045  HobMte 053A
 C:\OS2\PMSHELL.EXE
c0000005
1f93b94a
P1=00000002  P2=0003ff14  P3=XXXXXXXX  P4=XXXXXXXX
EAX=00000000  EBX=1f93b93c  ECX=00040028  EDX=0004f564
ESI=00000000  EDI=0004f3f4
DS=0053  DSACC=d0f3  DSLIM=ffffffff
ES=0053  ESACC=d0f3  ESLIM=ffffffff
FS=150b  FSACC=00f3  FSLIM=00000030
GS=0000  GSACC=****  GSLIM=********
CS:EIP=005b:1f93b94a  CSACC=d0df  CSLIM=ffffffff
SS:ESP=0053:0003ff18  SSACC=d0f3  SSLIM=ffffffff
EBP=00040054  FLG=00010206

PMWP.DLL 0001:0000b94a
This happens once every 100 boots approx. I don't know the reason and it happens much later after the init of the kernel has finished.

It's possible that it's some old bug that has no relation to OS/4. I remember on the original kernel there sometimes happened situations when there appeared PMshell background and nothing more. Somebody offered a solution with organizing a kind of delay  before PMshell start, but I cannot find that post.

Of course, this can be something else, in this situation comport log should help.

2) booting with OS4krnl but ACPI.PSD produces a trap with a complaint regarding missing ACPI4.BPD file...did some researching here but best I could do was to find an earlier forum post (http://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php?topic=785.0) and having re-read the on-line docs multiple times I still can not tell whether I should be attempting to patch the ACPI.PSD driver with the patch files supplied at the OS4 site (I am guessing the answer is a NO because those patches are meant for 3.22.06 release whereas I'm running 3.22.08 here)

Yes, ACPI.PSD has to be patched and used with /ST=0. Indeed,  the patch does very simple thing:
in ACPI.PSD there is something like this:
Code: [Select]
if (ST==0)
{
    ST=4096
}

patch makes this code out of it:
Code: [Select]
if (ST==0)
{
    ST=0
}

thus, if one asks for ST=0 he does get ST=0. I would like to stress that this patch does not "spoil"  ACPI.PSD and it still can be used with original kernel.

ACPI4.BPD - it is an optional acpi driver. It is not obligatory for booting the system.

It is true that there are patches only for 3.22.06 and 3.22.03, that's because nobody had asked for something else. If you insist,  patch for 08 will also be produced. At the same time you may try OS/4 with 06 (ACPI.PSD only  the rest may remain 08)

I will a couple more combinations here, like RETAIL vs DEBUG kernels and /APIC vs none for OS4APIC.PSD driver.

waiting for result  (better with comport log ;) )

OS/4 kernel svn4502 is released. The changes have occurred mostly in clock$.
If HPET is available in the computer, clock$ will use it for providing DosTmrQueryTime/Freq with 64bit time stamp.
