An observation after I put OO4 on several of the machines here.

All the single core processor machines here throw a fault on closing similar to the following:

07-22-2013  19:35:55  SYS3170  PID 06b9  TID 0001  Slot 00d1
N:\OPENOFFICE-4\PROGRAM\SOFFICE.BIN
c0010001

EAX=00000000  EBX=168faf84  ECX=230b1000  EDX=00000000
ESI=168f662c  EDI=00000000
DS=0053  DSACC=f0f3  DSLIM=ffffffff
ES=0053  ESACC=f0f3  ESLIM=ffffffff
FS=150b  FSACC=00f3  FSLIM=00000030
GS=0000  GSACC=****  GSLIM=********
CS:EIP=005b:15480899  CSACC=f0df  CSLIM=ffffffff
SS:ESP=0053:0012fc88  SSACC=f0f3  SSLIM=ffffffff
EBP=0012fca0  FLG=00092213

DOSCALL1.DLL 0003:0000c541

While all the 2, 4 and 6 core processor machines have no problems so far.  I can open odt documents and even windows docx documents as well as windows excel and power point files.

I wonder if this may have something to do with the problems others have.  Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be anywhere to report problems.

Hi Pete,

I've had a bit more luck than you.

I unzipped it and moved openoffice 4 to the root of my test drive.  Going on past experience renamed it to openoffice-4 then created a program object for soffice.exe, double clicked on it and it started with no apparent problem, even if it was rather slow.

It opened an .odt document that I have been working on - using libreoffice 4 for windows in virtualbox - it even allowed me to edit and save it.

When I closed it, it threw a fault in doscall1 for some reason which I will try and track down when I have more time to play with it.

Storage / Re: JFS Error during boot

Eirik, where did you get the 'chkdsk /f c:' from?  As far as I know it should be 'chkdsk c: /f:n' with the f:n being F0 (the default) f1, f2 or f3.  As I don't have bootable JFS I may be wrong and what you say is just for that but it does not shows that in the OS/2 command reference.

OS/2, and I assume eCS because it is based on OS/2, is not a multi user OS.  That being said, it is possible, with a lot of effort, to make it so a number of people can log in to an OS/2 machine and have their own desktop and settings but not all at once.

Here, our servers run OS/2 as webserver and file server and storage with each workstation running OS/2.  We do have a few applications that have been produced as web apps and as such can be accessed by any computer with a browser but I don't think this is what you want to do, although it might do what you want.

A little more information as to the type of working you envisage would help us to help you if possible.

I don't know exactly what the message means not having bootable JFS.

The first thing I would do is to boot to the maintenance partition and run chkdsk C: /F and see what it throws up.  If you don't have a maintenance partition then boot from CD and do it that way [I understand that the eCS CD allows you to do that].

I have read the 'disapproved' section where you list:  Frinika, Subsonic, Sonogram, Laoe, HDTVTestPattern, MagicLantern, Jpo, Fir4j, JavaPoint, MindRaider, ProjectLibre 1.5.2,  Makagiga, Java Outline and, Smartgit as java applications that do not work for various reasons. Joeffice is not on that list.

I know that Pete was told that it requires java 7 but I have both the windows installer version and the zip version working on win XP in a VM using java 6.

When I get some spare time I will try and work out what the linux shell script does to start the program to see if it will or will not work on OS/2.

I looked at that Joop but there is a problem - you do not show a way of running the particular Java application that Martin is looking at.

Hi Paul,

I am one of the silent majority regarding CUPS and hplip.

When the combination works with my HP Color Laserjet 3500 it works extremely well - this is through the print server on my D-Link Nas.  The problem I have is when the nas goes into sleep mode there is no way I can do any more printing without having to re-install CUPS.  I am assuming this is a problem caused by the nas and not CUPS/hplip hence I have not commented about it before this.

It is much quicker to just save up printing - by printing to file - and then open a cut down version of win XP in VirtualBox and print from there.

If you unzip the zip version you will find in the bin dir 3 files, the first is a shell script for linux and apple which even checks what version of the apple OS it is using, the other are windows startup, 32 and 54 bit versions, that do the same thing as the shell script.

From that it would appear that this NOT a universal Java application but one tailored for the three OSs.  You could question the author about this and ask if there is any way it will work on anything other than the 'big' three.

If you want to try, look in the \joeffice\joeffice\core\local directory, there is a core_joeffice.jar file that might be the one that starts everything but that starts off requiring NetBeans, there also doesn't appear to be anything in it that calls anything else.  In the \joeffice\joeffice\modules directory there is org-joeffice-desktop.jar that looks a little more hopeful.

Maybe the non installer version requires Java 7 but I installed the windows installer version on a friends notebook that has Java 6 something and it works.  The big problem appears to be that it needs NetBeans - at least it has a lot of NetBeans in the various sub dirs on windows XP.

Hi Roderick,

Since you are reading this thread I will add a few comments regarding the live CD.  These are from people that I have shown it to.

First, general comments.
1) You need to know a lot about the physical computer to be able to fill in the information. [this was from several people when the default values didn't work - French keyboard, monitor resolution etc.]
2) Detection of network card very poor.  [it appears to find intel nics but that is about all - see 1, also it never found any wireless cards]
3) Does not pick up USB mouse or trackball.  [these were all working with the operating system on the various computers]

Next, specific shortcomings, not exactly complaints but things that people think they need.
1)  No File Explorer.  [this I overcame by having File Freedom on a USB stick]
2)  The open folders are 'clunky'.  [for some reason all the folders are set to 'multiple columns' and 'maintain sort order' even if there are only a few items in the folder - this creates a redundant scroll bar at the bottom of the open folder - it would be better if they were set to 'gridded' or 'as placed']

When it works people are generally impressed - after finding the correct nic, setting folder defaults and providing a file explorer.

There is still a way to go but being a beta release I expect the final release will work with more systems on default settings.

Hi Paul,

A little more information.  I copied scanimage over to the tame directory and almost everything that worked with the old scanimage works with your new one - except sizing an area in the preview window.  I can size an area and it shows up as it did but scanimage scans the whole area regardless.  If this can be fixed, good, if not it just means cropping in PMView - one extra stage which will only be a big deal if I have a lot of scans to crop.

Usually I just have two partitions, one for OS and programs, the other for personal data. Any time I have to reinstall the OS, I copy all the content of the OS partition to the data partition, then, after installation, I copy needed directories back to their original position and delete unneeded stuff.

At least you are one step up from the windows pile everything in together attitude ;)

Here all our computers have at least three partitions, OS, programs, data.  That way I have an image of the OS partition that I can restore at any time - we do have ways of backing up the OS/2 desktops every weekend with the full backup of the data partition.  In a worst case situation all that would be lost is a weeks worth of changes to the desktop.  All the programs we use are backed up on one of the NAS with their INI entries if necessary.  With this setup I have replaced a dead hard disk and had the workstation back in operation with the same settings and programs in less than an hour, but then in business time is money  :D

By the way (and knowing that I'm going against the flow): root directory is becoming a bit crowded with \cups, \gs, \gutenprint and now \hplib and \sane around, would be great being able to install CUPS and Sane with RPM :-)
I have to ask, which root directory, not the operating system partition I hope because if it is you are making a rod for your back should you ever need to reformat and reinstall the operating system.

Hi Paul, yes, it scans.

using scanimage --mode color --resolution 300 I got the attached output - converted to jpg to take up less space.

Using --format tif produces the expected tif file output and all the resolutions work

I used the page I did because it represents the type of pages I have to copy and sometimes OCR.  In fact I'm quite pleased with the results, thank you.

I notice there are a lot of options in the epson2 backend listed as [inactive], will any of these be made active in the future?
