Applications / Update homepage Java applications
« on: August 03, 2014, 10:59:17 pm »
I have updated my homepage about Java applications.  See the link.
The Dutch part will follow soon. After this I hope the add more programs, unfortunately there are lots of them which won't work for some reason. Most of them due to the difference between Sun Java and Open JDK. I got the source from one application and I'm going to try to compile it with our Open JDK SDK. So may be I'll come back for some help.

Have fun and Ecs is only dead after the last user switched off  the light and no moment sooner,

Applications / Firefox error message
« on: July 28, 2014, 06:29:26 pm »
Yesterday I downloaded the new JAlbum. Its grown from about 18.5Mb to about 169Mb. You get 30 days to play with it and after that you need a license. In the zip also chromium browsers and this will give an error if JAlbum wants to use it. But there is in the preferences a choice for internal or external browsers, so internal set to off. Now the external browser is used and for OS/2-eCS this is Firefox. Up to the test I had Firefox 6.02 as browser. But we have more up to date FF with at least FF 17.01.1. So set it up that JAlbum have to use this FF, but as soon as it needs the browser I get an error from Firefox with the message "Couldn't load xpcom.dll". Is this a missing item in Odin?,  is it just that simple to copy xpcom.dll from an Windows xp installation in the Odin\system32 directory?, or will it just not work because it has to be an xpcom.dll but rebuild for Odin? Can someone help me with this?

Applications / Java 6.0 won't run next to FF 17.0.11
« on: July 18, 2014, 10:56:54 pm »
Busy today with updating my homepage, just to hot to do anything else. In front of me big fan at high speed for a little air, but that's hot too. I all did it in FF17.0.11 together with Webwriter/2, PMView Pro and Embellish. Last thing before I upload pages to my site is validating. I do this with Total Validator, it runs on Java 6. With FF10.0.12r2 no problems, but with FF17.0.11 the program won't start. I can repeat this problem. Both FF are installed same way, both are using RUN with an .ENV file which are the same. What will prevent Java to run a program which has nothing to do with FF?

Applications / FF17.0.11 latest plugin container problems
« on: July 15, 2014, 01:58:20 pm »
If I run FF10.0.12r2 and go to then the page loads in a short time, cpu spikes but goes down to normal levels. If I do the same with FF17.0.11 latest the page loads but the cpu is going up to the ceiling 99.9% and stays there. Page frozen, matter of fact FF frozen until eCS comes with a popup screen what to kill. I kill the page, ie FF is stopped but still the cpu 99.9%. With popup I see that the plugin container is still active(?).
We had this before, now you can try yourself.

Applications / FF 17.0.11 won't run youtube films
« on: July 15, 2014, 12:55:52 am »
I have FF 17.0.11 running, but when I want to play a youtube film the cpu is going up to 99.99% and stays there. For some reason it can load through, I have to shut it down with tops or so. With FF 10.0.12r2 no problem, instant view. I have the same add-on's installed and they are active in both versions. Can't find any setting which might be set wrong.
Now what?

Applications / Firefox 17.0.11 won't start
« on: June 21, 2014, 07:13:59 pm »
Installed or better said unzipped the zip file into a new directory. Copied the contents of to the ecs\dll directory. I use run. So in the ff directory there is a Firefox!.ENV file and the file Firefox!EL.EXE. Normally a program will run without ant trouble with this setup. Its the same as other ff setups, only this time additional dll files to copy. Done that. Yet at start up I get a beep and this;

Unable to start 'FIREFOX.EXE' - rc= 2 - possible cause: 'STDCPP6'

** press Enter to continue **

I have no idea where to look and what this error will tell me. So anyone can explain to me what I did wrong this time?

Thank you

Just send Steve a message that the communist link doesn't give the specified program on Hobbes. It seems missing.

Applications / vlc 2.1.0 won't start
« on: October 12, 2013, 04:05:23 pm »
Downloaded the new VLC and read the readme. As far as I can read this is not different than version 2.0.7 which runs fine on my system. For first run I just overwrite the old usr directory as I did before. But with this action and no changes in structure or file the program won't start. After that I checked my menu item but the directory and file are the same. I deleted usr directory and repeated the steps with version 2.0.7 and that one just starts and runs fine.  So what's wrong?

Applications / Pdfsam and JAVA1.6.0ga5
« on: August 28, 2013, 04:09:47 am »
I tried to run pdfsam version 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 under Java 1.6.0ga5. All is installed, other programs just runs fine with my Java 1.6.0ga5 setup.
But with pdfsam and Java 1.6.0ga5 I get libc panics.
I did get this with both pdfsam versions;

_um_free_maybe_lock: Tried to free block twice - block=7d61de94 lock=0x1
pid=0x0047 ppid=0x0046 tid=0x0010 slot=0x00a5 pri=0x0200 mc=0x0000
Process dumping was disabled, use DUMPPROC / PROCDUMP to enable it.

I edited my cmd file back to Java 1.6.0ga1 and I have no problems with pdfsam 2.2.1. Pdfsam starts.
Can other users verify this behavior?

Applications / Java applications Jedit 5.1.0
« on: August 11, 2013, 05:04:08 pm »
I installed Jedit 5.1.0, did go with one error message. Today it seems it needs the internet. But as the message at the bottom says, don't worry.
After installation I update my startup script and Jedit does start up. In English, no Dutch (I'm Dutch). Can't be choosen too, its just not there.
After that lets load a file....

And here we have an old bug which was introduced after they kicked out the OS/2 code because no one uses OS/2 anymore.
That poor fellow never did a real search on the internet. After my complaint that we aren't dead but alive and kicking they put the code back in they said, but it seems not all of it. The fellow who took it all out never had the idea to note down what he had done. So they don't know whats missing. They took out some "old days dos stuff" and with it probably the way how to manage directories and files. Today with this latest edition Jedit can't read directories properly in OS/2. It comes up with totally nonsence.

I got this in my bug tracker file;
16:40:13 [jEdit Worker #2] [error] ErrorListDialog$ErrorEntry: i:\programs\Jedit_510\i:\programs\Jedit_510\i:\programs\Jedit_51_
16:40:13 [jEdit Worker #2] [error] ErrorListDialog$ErrorEntry: Cannot list directory.

Its all almost one line, I do have all those directories, but not in this insane way. I still use Java 160 first edition because most programs do work well with this version. Later versions do give some trouble with some programs in not having a menu on top, its there, but not displayed. I did put the bug in the bug tracker, but it seems not important enough. That's why I'm a bit down about eCS and how it all goes today, in case you ask yourself if my website is still maintained.

May be there is a trick too fool OS/2 or Jedit. Anyone?

Applications / Java bugs are not fixed?
« on: January 04, 2013, 02:23:45 pm »
I did put in some found defects, I'm an end user, can not always point out with "this is the problem". I see things happening, but sometimes its not clear if it is Java or if it is Odin.

With JGraphite the developer was so kind to put in extra code to solve a problem in OS/2-eCS. The problem is simple. You have to download an older version, because in the latest its fixed, but the developer want to get the code out again!
Open a picture and give the command Full Screen Preview. You get an image with the same resolution as the installed monitor size, ie you only see the picture and OS2-eCS and all others are somewhere in the background. With the escape key you have to go back, but in the older versions and with also other programs, this doesn't work, even worse, the whole WPS does go down. Also Alt-Tab or something else doesn't close the full screen session or get you proper back. Its clear a bug, pretty pinpointed too I think.

But I get back that they can't solve everything in Java. The developer fixed it,  bug report (ticket) closed. Excuse me?

I already have Java programs which don't work in Java 1.4.2_05 or 1.60whatever because that version is not SUN Java based, have programs which do work in 1.60whatever, but does only the right things when Odin 0.71. is active, later versions no file management, ie you can open a file load screen, but can't sort or display it in an other manner as icons tell you. Version 1.60ga2 and up no menu in ImageJ (if something is actively maintained, this program is one of them), also ask the guys (not related to OS/2-eCS) to fix it for OS/2-eCS?

Now my question.
Is this the way we have to go? Funding stuff which doesn't work? Your bug will be solved (hopefully) if you donate XX$ again?
We have some credit out there. If I write and can pinpoint the problem clear enough then they (not related to OS/2-eCS) are willing too solve if its easy to fix. But if we're going the way the "dev fixed it" instead of solving our own bugs then I'm afraid this will end sooner than later. I like OS/2-eCS, have invested lots of time, do crazy things where other systems have great difficulties, but there is a point that even I say its enough.
Sorry for this thread, but I think I have to let you know what's happening right now. I'm not pleased with it.

Also my question about version 1.7 aka 7 did get the answer of donating more $. I did donate a fare amount of money to pull version 6 of, but what's enough money for a private user? This seems a well without bottom.

Applications / Java applications
« on: December 30, 2012, 04:46:39 pm »
I have setup a Java applications page on my homepage. Each Java program which runs on my system gets its own page with how I did it including a download file with at least the command file and an OS/2 icon. Sometimes I put in other libs if they are hard to find. Today I have finished the new setup in English language, you can find it here;

I hope it will help some users. I want to add that its a way of running a program, not "the" or "the only way".
Have fun,
