Setup & Installation / Re: Realtek ALC892

Hi Remy

It might be an idea to see what the state of the mixer is. Open a command window in \mmos2 and enter

     unimix -list > mixer.txt

Also use this command to generate a list of unimix options and use

     unimix > unihlp.txt

Open mixer.txt in an editor and have a look at the Controls and current values, adjust as necessary referring to unihlp.txt.

I have a laptop that turns off the volume at shutdown but does not turn the volume back on at boot so I use a cmd file that runs at startup to enable and set volume.

Hi John

Is this an OS/2 or ArcaOS install?

Is disk access mode EIDE or AHCI?

At what point does the crash happen?

Hi Remy

Is the "fix" an updated os2ahci.add driver?

Did you set the UEFI BIOS to "Compatibility" mode?

Setup & Installation / Re: USB support in original CP2 CD

Hi John

No, never having had a copy of cp2 - went the eCS route instead. I would be surprised if there is not some sort of removable drive monitor included, maybe usbmon.exe is hidden in a zip/self executing package.

I suggest following Ians advice to update usb drivers as it is a worthwhile update for most systems and usbmon.exe seems to be included in the usbmsd update usbs10162 - you should find usb10162 and usbs10162 here http://www.os2site.com/sw/drivers/usb/index.html

Hi John

Do you have the usb device monitor running? - I think this is \os2\boot\usbmon.exe on a cp2 system

This is the bit that "notices" when a usb drive gets attached and pops up a message.

Hi John

Can I suggest the use of USBcfg, a visual USB configuration tool with help files including preparing usb drives for use with OS/2 available in zip and warpin packages http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-search.php?key=usbcfg&pushbutton=Search

Hi Eduardo

I think Flash checks that it is working on an eCS system. I am not sure what it checks but you could try creating the [Boot]:\ecs directory and then copying the file ECS_INST.FLG from an eCS installed system.

Hi

Uniaud sometimes needs a little "fiddling" - I have an old Acer laptop that has to run a setmixer.cmd at startup to actually turn on audio output and set volume levels.

Before trying to write such a cmd file though it is a good idea to check state of audio.
Run \mmos2\unimix > unimix_options.txt  in a command window for a list of options.
Run unimix -list > unimix_set.txt to get the current settings.
Open unimix_options.txt in the text editor to see what the unimix options are
Open unimix_options.txt to see if various options are set correctly.

By doing this I discovered that the Acer needed audio output turned on every boot as it seems that the audio card gets switched off automatically at shutdown.

Here is my simple cmd file as an example:-

REM setmixer.cmd
REM
REM Purpose: setup audio mixer values
REM  id1 = Volume Control for both
REM  speakers, cnt0 & cnt1: set both
REM  to a value of 50

unimix -id1 -cnt0 -val50
unimix -id1 -cnt1 -val50
Exit

I discovered that the above cmd works best when it is called startup.cmd and left in the root of the boot drive.

Hope the above is of help.

Hi

At that price I'm stunned as well - currently trying to sell a really nice Meridian G01 pre amp myself and had no bids at all!

Maybe the purchasers are collectors with more money than anything else  :-)

Hi

I am not using the cutdown version of xwp that ArcaOS installs so cannot test this myself but the full xwp has a Panic mode.

Try pressing the Shift key during Desktop startup (press just as the screen changes from black to colour) and run xfix from the displayed menu. Hopefully that will resolve the problem.

Hi Andi

Yes, worth checking "turn off to save power" or whatever is not Enabled although that was not the case here.

I suspect Win7 glitched during shutdown although I would also guess that something went wrong with nic driver loading during the ArcaOS boot. Either way booting Win7 seems to have been the resolution.

No views on the lantran.logs shown? - Does the top log indicate a useable wired nic?

Hi All

I spoke too soon about not having Realtek nic problems as I had no connectivity earlier today. The problem got resolved and my experience was added to an ongoing Realtek discussion http://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php?topic=1392.msg13614#msg13614

Hi Wes

The problem seems to be "the device MMRE.OS2 was not installed." so the question is: Why not? - Is it the correct driver for the nic? - Is the nic Enabled in the BIOS?

I have just resolved a sudden connectivity problem with a Realtek nic that uses the mmre.os2 driver and posted my experience to the discussion mentioned by roberto. The main point that you will be interested in reading is that booting to Win7 seems to have reset/initialised the nic and my OS/2 installations on the system now have connectivity restored.

Hi All

Recently i posted that I had managed to get an ArcaOS install completed almost to my satisfaction and that the Realtek nic was working fine - see last post in this thread http://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,1407.15.html

At that point I was using dhcp. A little later I switched to a static ip, rebooted and had no problems.

When I booted this morning there were no connectivity problems. A friend phoned with a Win7 question around midday so I rebooted into Win7 to check how to resolve his problem. That sorted I shutdown and went for lunch.

A couple of hours later I booted ArcaOS - and discovered I had no connectivity. Booting my laptop proved the router was working so I started looking into what was wrong with ArcaOS connectivity.

What I did notice is that the lantran.log looks very different to what I expect it to look like based on logs I have seen previously - and checking against my 2 eCS volumes on this system it is definitely different. Here is that lantran.log:-

This successful log is the same as those stored from last boots of eCS2.1 and eCS2.2 on this system - and connectivity works. I suspect the failed log(top) possibly indicates nic related items in the config.sys file loading in the wrong order.

Before I tried sorting out the ArcaOS connectivity problem I booted eCS2.2b2 and discovered that was also having a connectivity problem. Very strange as I had not been using eCS for a few days and had definitely not made any configuration changes during last use.

Well, I had been running Win7 when I last connected to anything so I rebooted into Win7. No problems with Win7 connectivity although it seemed to take a little longer than usual for the nic icon on the taskbar to show as connected.

Having proven the nic working I rebooted into eCS2.1 - the only OS/2 installation not tested so far. That booted fine, no problems with connectivity.

I then rebooted into eCS2.2 and connectivity had been restored.

This looks suspiciously like a windows related problem; maybe something had glitched during Win7 shutdown affecting the nic and causing the connectivity problem. I have had hardware in the past that struggled to work with OS/2 based systems and the problems had (mainly) gone away after using the hardware in windows. I can only guess that the windows driver does some sort of initialisation or reset of the hardware.

So, I can only suggest that those people struggling with Realtek nics boot into windows, if possible, to check whether the nic works with that system. If it does it may then work with OS/2 based systems.

I must admit that I did not boot into ArcaOS until I had spent a few hours rearranging the ArcaOS config.sys file to closely resemble my eCS2.2 config.sys file especially the order of nic/networking related lines. It may not have been necessary but the lantran.log now looks like I expect it to and connectivity works - although I suspect that may be more to do with having run Win7 to check that the nic works.

I hope this is of some help to other Realtek users having connectivity problems despite all drivers loading OK.

Regards

Pete
