You might need a newer kernel to install on the Pentium D. Not sure what you'd need though to go on the floppy.

Hardware / Re: File system is dirty! Need help!

Hi Ivan,

A live Ubuntu or derivative such as Mint CD should work fine as it ships with JFS (and HPFS) support. In my case I just copied the files to a different partition.
Unluckily it is not a simple procedure as you have to go to the command line, mount the partition as read only using sudo and such as OS/2 JFS partitions are only accessible as root under Linux due to the lack of permissions though it is possible to add them. At the time I had to read a few man pages to learn how to do it and now forget the exact procedure.
You could use a USB stick formatted by OS/2's JFS. Linux can access OS/2 JFS but not the other way.
If the poster has a valid DFsee license, getting Jan's help is probably the easiest route. As it looks like only the journal is damaged, he should be able to recover everything except his most recent work if he was writing to the disk when the power failed.

Experience with chkdsk problems on JFS formatted partitions is when they throw up the 'can't continue' fault the only option is the reformat and restore from backup.

For some reason there doesn't appear to be a robust way of recovering anything from a JFS partition if the meta-data is corrupted.

I've mounted the partition read only on Linux and recovered files that way when chkdsk (and fsck) was faiing. IIRC, once the Linux fsck worked when the OS/2 chkdsk failed.

Applications / Re: Problems with lsusb and usb.ids
« on: August 31, 2018, 12:59:17 am »
Hi Dariusz,

I doubt that the usb.ids file is the problem, the latest one works with USBRES.EXE and gives more details about some of my connected usb devices.

The last time I used lsusb it required the usb.ids to be in a specific directory - the dir was hard coded into it. This was in 2013 so things may have changed

Exactly, on ArcaOS, it is x:\sys\bin that lsusb looks in.

Yes, but it is clearly showing 2 different versions with only the old version containing libusb10. On a new install, libusb is installed as it is a dependency for cups and associated stuff.

What's weird is that your screenshot showed 2 versions of libusb. Was this due to it not being installed? Here with it installed, it clearly only shows the content of the latest package, which has libusb100.dll in it.

You need to install libusb1-legacy to get libusb10.dll, which I assume is a forwarder.

It really depends on the hardware and it seems that most newer graphics cards (and builtin graphics) doesn't have the support needed for seemless or like my older card, partial support. I'm using the newest Panorama which I believe only has minor fixes.
As for SNAP, I believe it is low on the priority list with drivers such as USB3 and AHCI at the top as they're needed to install on new hardware. Arca Noae doesn't have endless resources.

Setup & Installation / Re: Acquiring 5.0.3
« on: August 25, 2018, 07:24:02 am »
You have to completely re-install it, overriding whatever you have already or to a different partition. Plan is for 5.1 to allow updating.
Really there is no need to update to the latest point release, just download which ever drivers have been updated and install those. The 5.0.3 is good for people having problems installing as that is what most of the fixes are for.

Good to hear. IIRC, with the Mint 18.3 install, I only got the option about where to put the bootloader when I had a /boot partition but I forget the particulars.
As a bonus, you should be able to open C: in Linux, it has to be as root (or sudo) as it won't have any permissions.

Can you open a full screen Dos session and then use Alt-Home to switch it to being a window? It's the only way i can get a windowed Dos session otherwise I get a window about one line high and a popup about not supporting the resolution or such.
Funny enough, a Winos2 session does open in a window here though I get the same popup.

OK, it has been a while since I installed Mint, and it was version 18.3.
In my case, I actually used DFSee, www.dfsee.com to do the partitioning, and the disk checker on the ArcaOS install DVD is a cut down version of it which may work, OS/2's LVM will work as well. The important thing is to partition so that partitions end up on cylinder boundaries, LVM info doesn't get lost etc.
Here I have 32GB for /boot, 76 GB for / and 180 GB for /home as well as 32 GB for swap, probably overkill but /boot actually needs quite a bit of space as every kernel update leaves the old kernel there.
I found when using the disk tool in the Mint installer that I needed /boot before it let me put Grub there as it refused to put it in /, unluckily I forget the exact method I used, I do remember quite a bit of trial and error to get it to use my existing partitions and put grub on /boot

Snow just to get dual boot working.

Partition the disk with OS/2 tools, I created partitions for / /home and /boot, install grub in /boot and use Airboot to boot /boot, which should be labeled Linux if you used ext4, when you want to run Mint.

:D  I think the issue is that those drivers are now in the 5.0.3 iso, so not needed separately.
Matt

Lots of people don't want to reinstall for a minor upgrade when they can just upgrade the drivers, so I doubt that is the issue. More likely they're still having problems with their server.

How are you dual booting? This error is often caused by OS/2 getting confused about what its drive letter is.
