A lot of people here drive Tesla cars, and they've been putting stickers on them apologizing for Elon. I don't see the same for HP computers. Meg Whitman famously brought HP from the largest computer company in the world to one that was not even in the top 10. After than, she ran a very unsuccessful campaign for governor of California.

I don't want to demonize HP, but your headline go me thinking about computer history. I don't advocate politics -- OS/2 users from all political camps are welcome. But I do acknowledge that politics exist. When I did OS/2 consulting, I supported HP computers along with the rest. HP isn't going to help us much. Lenovo, my goto brand, isn't going to help much either.

It would be cool if we could align with one of the brands with open-source BIOS and non-proprietary hardware. They are obscure at this point, but I hope they will grow. The right to repair movement might help us get better long-term prospects for OS/2-compatible hardware.

I'm running a Lenovo X13 laptop. I started out with a 2 TB M.2 NVMe, but later upgraded to a 4 TB M.2 NVMe.

Graphics and Window Design / icons with an X overlay
« on: March 02, 2026, 10:04:47 pm »
I'm attaching a photo of a screen where the icons have been decorated with a kind of X in the lower right corner. (see attachment)

What does it mean, and how do I get normal icons back?

It may be that the PC manufacturer fixed their CSM software that provides the Video BIOS. If you can update the BIOS, it might help.

Hi Myung-Hun,

Thank you very much for this, it is ideal for me as I do most of my stuff under Ubuntu now, with OS/2 in a VirtualPC.
Will set it up and give it a try over the next week.

If you get a chance, try to build PMMail with this environment.

I miss having you in the OS/2 community, Paul. I hope you decide to rejoin us.

Bitwise had both a C++ developer and fund-raising. What would you do differently?

Applications / Re: XTide

I unzipped the program files into a directory. I downloaded and extracted the harmonics file

https://flaterco.com/files/xtide/harmonics-dwf-20251228-free.tar.xz

I set and environment variable to the location of my harmonics file

Code: [Select]
set hfile_path=\suntanv6\apps\xtide\dist\harmonics-dwf-20251228-free.tcd
I ran the program, but I now get a message about time zone support.

Code: [Select]
tide -l "Santa Cruz"

Indexing \suntanv6\apps\xtide\dist\harmonics-dwf-20251228-free.tcd...
XTide Fatal Error:  BROKEN_ZONEINFO
Your platform appears to have broken time zone support.  You need to have a
reasonably modern version of the time zone database that is available from
http://www.iana.org/time-zones.

The XTide program shows the tide table for a particular location. It worked for years, but stopped a couple of weeks ago when the harmonics fiie expired.

It's still under development here:
https://flaterco.com/xtide/files.html

But there is no longer any OS/2 version.

Although it is an X program, there is also a command line version, tide.exe, which was more useful for OS/2.

Is there any hope for building the current release; at least the command line version?

Hardware / Re: Video memory cannot be assigned to 32-bit address!

For my Lenovo Thinkpad X13 Gen 2, the "Accessible to system" memory reported by mem /v is 2267 MB

And this is a "ThinkPad Ethernet Extension Adapter Gen 2" I am using for Ethernet. The X13 gen 2 and the T14s gen 2 share a hardware manual, so they are very similar.

I also have the Lenovo Thinkpad USB-C Doc Gen 2, so I plan to learn a lot more about USB support under ArcaOS.

I need to correct my previous post. I changed the BIOS setting for video RAM from 512 MB to 256 MB, and ArcaOS can now run on the computer. The latest MultiMac32-E1000B driver supports the Ethernet port.

A Lenovo adapter is required to connect an Ethernet cable because the laptop is too thin to support a normal Ethernet connection.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X13 gen 2, and while I didn't get it to run ArcaOS, I was curious if it could be done.

It can't. (see attachment) Actually, it can. See correction below.

Storage / 4 TB hard drive
« on: December 27, 2025, 02:18:23 am »
The time finally arrived for a hard drive upgrade for my travel laptop. I mostly run ArcaOS, but occasionally Windows 11 for web browsing and hardware support. My ArcaOS computer hosts about 1.5 TB of data. I wanted to build a computer that runs ArcaOS in a VirtualBox session and holds a copy of that data. I backed up my computer, and installed a 4 TB NVMe m.2 2280 SSD. I restored from my backup.

(see attachment)

The backup software I used (EaseUS Partition Master) made the wrong volume type for my ArcaOS volumes, and so I needed to fix that. I was able to make some fresh ArcaOS Type 1 volumes and temporarily assign drive letters to the volumes with the wrong volume type. The new volumes are able to boot ArcaOS.

I extended the Windows boot volume to just over 3 TB, and created a new virtual hard drive to contain my data. I used rsync to bring over the 1.5 TB data to the new virtual hard drive. The virtual hard drive is actually a bit FASTER than JFS running native. It still took a long time to copy 1.5 TB of data.

When I was done, I deleted the volumes with the wrong volume type. This was a mistake, as my Windows 11 volume would no longer boot, failing with UMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME (0xED). It turns out that Windows boots the Nth volume on the drive, so it could no longer find the boot volume. I made two dummy volumes, and Windows was able to count up to 5 and boot again.

So far, the Virtual ArcaOS works well, and it's nice to have an easy way to share data between OS/2 and Windows 11.

Networking / Re: Network setup for VirtualBox
« on: December 21, 2025, 03:54:18 am »
Further experimentation. First, I say again that on Windows 11, NetBIOS works on adapter 2 as expected.

Setting Promiscuous mode has no effect, as far as I can tell.

Even TCP/IP on Adapter 2 does not work in Linux. I can swap adapter type, it makes no difference. And If I put NetBIOS on Adapter 1, it does work in Linux. But I have to have the adapter in bridged mode, so I have to choose the adapter. That means not supporting WiFi.

This sounds like a bug in VirtualBox. Adapter 2 works in Windows, but not in Linux.

You can make DVD > 2 GB

The following statements extracted from one of my old DVD burning programs.

'@cdattach' DVDletter
'@cdwfmt' DVDletter '/erase'
'@cdcopy' tmpCDroot || '\*.*' DVDletter'\ /s > nul'
'@cdattach' DVDletter '-s'
