We tried putting the ISO in all the usual places but the 'Install Guest Additions' never found it.  That is why we did it by mounting it in a virtual CD.

Have you tried http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.0.6/ for the Guest Additions?  The ISO is near the top of the list.

I agree with your observations that XP works faster in the old version (program start time about 3 seconds, with this new version I sometimes wonder if it is going to start).

The mounting of the Additions ISO was something one of my techs worked out because we couldn't find where the program expected to find it.  In the end she attached it to one of the virtual CD drives and both XP and 7 found it and we were able to install them (did the same for the Linux VM).

At the moment I'm not pushing this out to our clients - they wouldn't be happy with it.

Having had time to test this release all I can say is that it works but is almost 100% slower than the old version.

The one thing it does do that the old version doesn't, is to have reasonably smooth mouse pointer movement in a win7 guest.

Is there likely to be ant improvement in the speed of starting and running VMs?  This slowness extends to opening programs in the VM with some taking over 3 times as long to start.

Setup & Installation / Re: Desktop restarts at local midnight

Thanks Doug,  Pulses on the mains was one of the things I thought about, we have seen enough computers reboot because a piece of equipment started or stopped in an engineering plant to know about such things from actual experience.

Thanks Dave,  There is the Daytime client running as far as I know (that is one of the normal utilities bundle we install as normal).  I will switch that off tomorrow because I'm not in the office this evening and I can't be bothered leaving my warm house to go out in 4oC to get there.

Setup & Installation / Desktop restarts at local midnight
« on: December 31, 2016, 01:54:44 pm »
This is an odd 'problem' that I noticed on one of the computers assembled by our teens that are on our social program.

A few days ago that computer happened to be on at midnight when I saw it restart the desktop.  I have now seen this at every midnight since then but can't see any reason for it to do so.

If anyone has any ideas please post them.

This computer is one they have assembled from salvaged parts and consists of:
Acer MCP61M2MA-K motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core processor 4200+
2x 1GB DDR2 Memory
ATI Radeon X550 graphics card (not using the internal nvidia)
ST3320820AS SATA hard disk
ST320LM001 SATA hard disk
DVD RW SATA
DVD ROM SATA

The operating system was installed from an updated (using UPDCD) OS/2 CP2 (they needed to see how it was done and do it).
Latest XWorkplace installed
Styler2 and a set of utilities that we use on all our computers is also installed.

In other words, apart from some of the specialist programs, which shouldn't have any bearing on the problem, it is the same as all our other computers - the ones that don't reset the desktop at midnight.

Thought please.

The fact that all I had checked was 'show this message next time' must have been the reason the other options remained unchecked (we have some monitoring applications that we don't shut down when we restart the desktop because they would lose sync if they shutdown).

Hi Pete,

If you don't click OK and let the restart happen, your changes won't be saved.

Maybe that sentence could be written 'If you don't click OK (and let the restart happen), your changes won't be saved.' which is to be expected.

I have just tested that on the workstation I'm using and it works as Rich says.  In fact I think I will go round all our computers and make that the default setting.

The easiest way is to use the DFSee BootManager tools.

I couldn't find an executable named pci.exe or PCI104VKA

You wouldn't unless you went to hobbes.  There you will find it and an updated picdev.text to use with it.

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/misc/pci104vka.zip
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/system/pcidevs_20140301.zip

The pci104vka zip includes a windows version that does not appear to work with anything beyond XP.  The OS/2 version works well, just read the documentation.

Very nice to know as I have a friend looking for a notebook that we can install OS/2 on.

One question.  What is the screen resolution of your unit?

An observation.  We have 18 desktop workstations with 1TB drives that we installed OS/2 on by using DFSee to make the partitions first with a small (3GB boot partition and splitting the remainder into equal partitions for programs and data respectively.  Our remaining workstations all have one or more disks larger than 1TB but the same size boot partition.

Setup & Installation / Re: Help installing old software
« on: December 17, 2016, 05:40:05 pm »
Thanks guys.

Believe it or not there is a readme.cid file on the CD which appears to be a full response file so CID is the way we will go.

I will put a note in the file about this because if this new unit lasts for 19 years like the last one everyone will forget what to do again.

Setup & Installation / Help installing old software
« on: December 17, 2016, 01:49:10 pm »
Way back in the late 1990s when passport advantage was alive we got a CD from IBM with software for a client.  I installed it using the Netscape based interface and al was well up to the middle of this week when the computer running it was involved in a fire.

We have a replacement computer but I need to reinstall the software from the CD preferably without using the Netscape route.  I think there is a way of doing this and I may have done so with other software but I can't remember how.

Could someone please prompt my memory.

Hi David,

Did you manage to get SMB printing to work?  So far it does not do anything for me yet I can use samba printing from a win XP VM without any problems.
