Hi Andi,
Sorry to hear of your misfortune but it was rather foolish to let win 10 anywhere near another OS.  I have a lone salvaged PC that has win 7 on it because a data logger I use only has a win interface.  I have been given a couple of laptops one of which had win 10 installed (lenovo ideapad) and the first thing I did was to kill win and install Linux mint.  I am thinking I might install ArcaOS if they ever release the UEFI version.

I have also had several friends bring their laptops with win 10 installed as an update that messed up everything they had there for me to fix.  I am dreading a rush of win 11 machines because I know of several laptops (HONOR MagicBook 16 and others) appeared as Christmas presents.

Plemty of os/2 users i know that run Windows next tot Arcaos without any issue's.

You know what? What's really ironic is that OS/2 is most probably the first 32-bit operating system which actually came bundled with a virtualization environment - the VDM. One can launch theoretically as many real DOS environments in what looks really close to a sandbox, work in them, erase them if they crash, use different DOS versions (or maybe even CP/M?  ;D) and it was all already included in the system.
This, and the similarities between SOM and the recent incarnations of .NET under Windows and Linux just make me think how advanced OS/2 was at the time of its launch. An incredible feature and skill set wasted by IBM...

eComStation and best I can tell ArcaOS have an contract with IBM and the EULA of IBM is leading. The EULA requires you for installation to have a license.
So you can not install ArcaOS from a legal perspective if you buy one license.

I remember there was an eCS license which worded something like - you are not allowed to use your license more than once at any given time. But it was allowed f.i. to have it installed on the desktop and when traveling using it on your notebook. All from the top of my head and I may remember wrong as it's so long ago. But it's not worth to dig it out as this is OT here anyway. Or do you think I violate any of my ArcaOS or eCS or Warp licenses? Of course I'm allowed to run my eCS as guest under my ArcaOS host. But it does not make any sense for me anyway. So what's your point?

There is statement in there that you are allowed to use upto 3 Perosnal licenses. If you use more then 3 licenses then you need to buy a commercial license.
The issue however its worded INCORRETLY. It reads (because its worded incorrectly) that if one purchase eCS lcense (personal version) entitles you can install a copy on upto 3 devices.

You would not lose your OS/2 data cause Linux can read your JFS partitions very well.

But he, when I'm on Linux then my FF and Seamonkey (email) profile and all my other data (documents, passwords, program sources) is on Linux host too. There's no sense anymore to store them in a virtualized guest system.

The key is the Host-OS. What is your Host-OS? Do you think there is any host OS which your really can 'never touch again'? And when you have a host OS, even a crippled one, then you have to master this host OS. And live with the host OS. Live with the host OSes quirks and problems. Have to keep them running and maybe install security updates there. Have to backup the host OS itself in case of ....

Example - for me the host OS never can be any Win cause I can't trust this OS. So the host have to be some flavor of Linux. FreeBSD, OpenSuse, Manjaro, Ubuntu, ... name it. It does not care. If I have a host OS which I have to know how to save, manage and backup my productive data, there's not much need anymore to produce any new data in a virtualized guest. There are tons of programs running native on Linux which will do my jobs similar or better than I do it on OS/2. But I've to live with the host OS crippled user interface (compared to the WPS) and with all the things you've to configure in some conf files in Linux.

Remember I know the benefits of VMs. But I don't see any advantage on running OS/2 as guest. If I change my main OS to some Linux then there will be no need anymore start OS/2 - ArcaOS. F.i. when I change my current file/mail/svn/web/.... server from OS/2 to Linux then a lot of things probably will work more smoothly as they do now. Given I ever invest the time to learn how to setup all this stuff on Linux.

For what do YOU need ArcaOS running in a VM?

Hi Neil.

I didn't get this one, since I only have 1920x1080 monitors or less.
Do you mean that in Panorama there is missing some configuration for higher resolutions? or custom resolutions? Is there any resolution number that is giving you problems?

I may start a new thread for this, but this is my list of choices for screen resolution

640x480
800x600
1024x768
1280x1024
1600x1200
1920x 1440
3840x2160

Notice that only the last one is a wide-screen.

I think this URL will tell what Panorama will most likely do on equipmetn that is pretty recent.

It could result in a lot of laptops the native resolution of the laptop working in UEFI boot mode.

BIOS boot native resolution is only possible if the BIOS supports this or the BIOS can be patched by Panorama. But this last option does not work
on all systems (patch BIOS with the resolution of the screen).

A lis of resolutions will not be implemented in reality. What is the best we thing we can get is support for "native screen resolution".

Ethernet 2.5 GB support does not depend onf the network stack. That is more related to getting a driver for such a chipset ported by AN.
The question is if the TCP/IP stack will provide the performance people would be expecting. Based on the 1 GB experience on some systems I do not
think 2.5 GB performance will be achieved on OS/2.

For me at least, the 2.5GB support is so that I can use a specific motherboard with AOS. The 2.5gb ethernet is the only ethernet provided, and it's a mini pc so it's not like I can just throw a NIC into the machine..

Open a ticket to be certain and attach a testlog. A ticket has less change of getting lost... I think David his list of todo items is extremely long...

Eventually, we're likely to need ipv6 support. Probably mean a new TCPIP stack, a major job.

Indeed a major rewrite, since the TCP/IP stack available does know nothing about IPv6. Maybe many low level drivers to be rewritten from scratch: I'm afraid of possible problems related to 64-bit needs...

About 98% of the code in the TCP/IP stack drivers such as socketsk.sys is recompiled FreeBSD code, It would possibly be easier to dump the old stack on OS/2 that we have and if somebody has the time port combined IPv4 and IPv6 stack. There are light wheight combined stacks for embedded systems that should be able to run on OS/2. Not needing 64 bit support.

How much work this would be. I had a URL to an open source IPV4/IPv6 stack but I lost the link.

There is a strange result in virtual memory, depending on where the Swapper position is defined in the config.
In my case if I have the config.sys:
SWAPPATH=C:\OS2\SYSTEM 0 4096
after start the system:
[C:\]mem /v

Total physical memory:      3 895 MB
Accessible to system:       2 999 MB
Additional (PAE) memory:      896 MB

Resident memory:              129 MB
Available virtual memory:     514 MB   <------

Available process memory:
  Private low memory:         373 MB
  Private high memory:      2 240 MB
  Shared low memory:          310 MB
  Shared high memory:       2 211 MB

 But if I create a new unit in 512MB memory,with Ramdisk, unit L: \, HPFS type, and define in the config.sys as:
 SWAPPATH=L:\ 0 4096
 [C:\]mem /v

Total physical memory:      3 895 MB
Accessible to system:       2 999 MB
Additional (PAE) memory:      896 MB

Resident memory:              129 MB

It seems that the 512MB is more important, than anything else, so that it occurs, that change.
On the other hand I do not see any change in the rest of the operation of the system, but it took a short time of evidence.

Sorry but the location of the swappath in the config.sys has no influence when the swapper gets set up.
This is most likely one of the kernel statements that gets processed very early by the kerne.
DEVICE= statement for example depend on the order in the config which driver is loaded.
I mean the location of the libpath line in the config.sys also does not alter that behaviour.

I seem to remember that starting with Virtual box 7 under a Windows host, you need to explicitly disable the Windows built-in hypervisor (obviously the Vidtualbox hypervisor implementation and the Windows one get in each other's way). As always, you'll need to find out how to do that and on my system it did not work (the Virtualbox Log still complained that the Windows hypervisor was still active).
Working with more than one core in the guest has never worked for me but I am still using eCS. I don't know if ArcaOS would make a difference. The problem is that multiple cores appear to work ok but after a while, the system(guest) gets confused and hangs eventually. That always happened when I was doing a compile with the old MS 16-bit compiler (run from multiple makefiles).

I think you can simply switch hyper-v support in the Windows control panel. I think if both hypervisors are active you can run end up with a bsod.

The ms16 bit compiler might also simply not be SMP safe. Use msrkexe to mark as SMP unsafe.

And the difference between Paul's and Roderick's result is down to Paul using a real OS and Roderick using a pretend OS which gathers personnel information for those that would try and rule the world.

Curent Virtualbox 7 is kaput. THe SMP support was broken in Virtualbox switch 7. Switch back to 1 CPU if you are running more then one CPU core.
I seem to recall a ticket was created @virtualbox to look into this.

This is not entirely true. I spun up an AOS 5.07 VM a day or two ago in Vbox 7 under linux, with 4 cores and SMP kernel, and it's running fine....

Not saying there aren't some cases of people having issues, but to say SMP support is broken is false.

Interesting you running 7.04 of Virtyalbix ? Enabling two cores testlog generic command takes 30 seconds in my windows 11 system. Run 1 core 3 seconds. Rich Dunkle with windows as the host is reported omethjng simuliar.

I remember we discussed this on January of 2022.

This was the discussed wishlist at it's time, in not any specific order:

- Audio and Camera support for a Videoconference tool.
- Bluetooth support for Keyboard and Mouse.
- GPT support for large disks.
- 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express.
- Intel Wifi support.
- Dual Screen Support
   - Intel HD dual screen support. (To mirror screen or extend screen)
   - Easier Hot plug to projectors. (To mirror screen or extend screen)
- Hibernate support for PCs  / Laptops.
- Standby support for PCs  / Laptops.

Is there anything else that changed for 2023?
Do you think something was missing or the priorities on hardware support had changed on this year?
Anything else to add?

Audio and Camera support we already have. BWW ported last December 2021 (Lars did that) DLL's for webcames to work. And Wim Brul also has a DLL.  Code needs to be written so QT can communication with these DLL's.

Other items I do not know the status.

That is interesting and I would like to add my experience with OS/2 and ArcaOs inside Virtualbox on a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 10th Generation with an Intel core i7 12th Generation, that is almost the same as Dave writes: The System is very slow, installations of OS/2 Warp usually crash while the second phase of installation - the graphical one - starts.
An ArcaOS 5-.07 Installation went through but is slow, due to problems with the graphic rendering I would guess.

So even in Virtual machines the support for OS/2 - ArcaOS is getting worse, unfortunately.
It may need an updated gradd or panorama or SNAP, I guess.

BTW when loading GRADD drivers on Warp 3 or Warp 4 you, need to have a to apply a certain level of base OS fixpak for GRADD to work.

What version of Virtualbox is are you using Sigurd ? Currently there are issue's with Virtualbox 7. Note Virtualbox broke some things and from what I understand this is being looked into. Switching on SMP support with Virtualbox 7 makes ArcaOS extremely. This happens on Windows and Linux host systems. Workaround if go back to Virtualbox 6 for now or run Virtualbox 7 with only one CPU core.

I do not know what these issue's have on other versions of OS/2.

Problems will be in the BIOS and some can be worked around. Mostly memory, mainly video, it needs to use as little as possible. Of course hyper-threading (and likely the AMD equivalent) needs to be disabled, though that shouldn't affect install as only one core is enabled then.
Some really new motherboards also put the video frame buffer above 4GB's. Won't work with a 32 bit OS.
So basically look in the BIOS to shrink memory, especially video memory. And hope the ACPI tables aren't broken badly. Sometimes opening an issue can get results such as ACPI workarounds.
And of course not booting the stick points to USB problems, look in the BIOS for any options to play with.

Computers where devices such have a 64 MMIO address, these regions can remapped by the upcoming ArcaOS 5.1.0. Note only the UEFI loader does this. But this is also only needed when a CSM is not present. As when booted in CSM mode this type of remapping is not needed.
