Setup & Installation / dead "VDM" entry in process list
« on: May 11, 2018, 03:35:05 pm »
in the TOP process list, I always have got a dead "VDM" entry (virtual DOS machine), a DOS or a Win16 session. I have not started it. I have got a new ArcaOS 5.0.2 instalation. Any ideas? Is there an ArcaOS user with or with not this entry?

My interest is the question that I cannot start windowed DOS or seamless Win16. (That's a documented problem a lot of users have.) Perhaps there's a connection between these two effects.

I cannot kill the "VDM" entry. I cannot see this in the GO or MOLE process list, and of course not in the OS/2 window list.

Setup & Installation / Re: Panorama v Snap Video
« on: May 11, 2018, 03:18:42 pm »
There are two different strategies:

A) installing an old graphics card shown in the SNAP compatibility list. On my old computer (2005) I ran an ATI X300 with Snap and a 1920x1200 pixels DVI 26 inch monitor.

The main problem of this strategy is that current operationg systems do not support this old hardware. On Ubuntu, version 10 was the last with ATI X300 support.

B) installing a real current graphics card or an APU processor. Because of the lack of SNAP support, you need a fast graphics card to get speed in VESA mode. A current Ryzen G APU processor (90 EUR) comes with a fast (comparible to graphics cards mid-class) graphic and I managed to run 1920x1200 pixels (all has been installed automatically by ArcaOS). I assume that 2560x1440 pixel will work, too. This resolution seems to be a limit: Higher resolutions are no more supported with DVI cable, you need a HDMI cable instead. And perhaps there are other limitations, too. I can set an old Windows game up to this resolution. And there's a non-technical problem: If you use 4k resultions, the OS/2 VIO fonts are going very small.

My new computer is faster with Panorama than the old one with Snap and ATI X300 card and needs less energy. I also tried the same mainboard with the elder Bristol Ridge processor (predecessor processor generation of Ryzen), and there's a distinctable difference. So "brute force" is an adequate strategie with Panorama...

I have heard that meanwhile ArcaNoae has got the rights for the source code for SNAP. It is planned to support current Intel and AMD graphics in the future, but no timetable.

The next days, I will publish here in the forum a detailed report with my new AMD Ryzen G computer where I have installed ArcaOS, Windows 10 and a current Ubutnu Linux, which was a hard work but now works - nearly - fine, but at the moment only 1 processor used (modern hardware, safe mode). And Seamless Win16 does not work, that seems to be a Panorama problem.

Setup & Installation / Re: RAM disk and temp folders...what else?

I have got an idea how to make a "shadow icon" for a Ramdisk folder which is not broken:
- create a program icon, use a folder icon on the "icon" tab
- point to a cmd file which holds the string  "open z:\myfolder"

259
The error message:

Detecting extended memory size ... using INT 15 EAX=E820 'SMAP'
63 MB starting at 1 MB
Not enough memory

seems to imply that the SMAP call to determine amount of memory miserably fails. That may have more than one cause: either the BIOS implementation of that INT 15 call is broken or, more likely, there are more and more boards that have large "system memory gaps" in the lower 4 GB area that they then use for PCI address space (so they have plenty of addressing space for old PCI cards that can only address 32-bit addresses) instead of addressing system memory.

An important question is: Is only the error message not correct or is the available memory indeed not sufficient? If there is an error message, a "continue anyway?" query would be useful.

I remember old Win16 and early Win32 programs which query the disk size before installing and if the size is bigger than 2 or 4 GB, it says "you need at least 10 MB disk space, installation cancelled."

I have got an ASUS B350M-A. Besiedes the problems described, all drivers work fine (you have only to add a /A:1 parameter in the config.sys behind uniaud32.sys) to activate the second sound card)

VESA graphics is really very fast. In daily work, the number of only one processor is not a real problem and I hope the problem will be fixed in some month. I plan to post a step for step explanation later how to install several OS.

Yes, I made all partitioning with Minilvm. I did not use dfsee for partitioning, but I copied the two ArcaOS partitions from one place to another. But before, I created a third and fourth partition for ArcaOS (same size). After copying, I deleted the old two partitions, also with Minilvm. At this moment, Minilvm still worked. I assume that Ubuntu changed something.

262
After installing Windows, ArcaOS and Ubuntu Linux on a new computer - meanwhile all works fine - minilvm shows a warning at beginning:
"Disk 1 reports a corrupt partition table."  The extended partition/logial drives are not shown anymore.

The problem seemed to happen after installing the last OS.  The order of Installation was Windows-Windows-ArcaOS-ArcaOS-Ubuntu Linux. I have no other malfunction, Airboot and all OS work fine.

DFSEE shows the following:

Can I repair this so I can use minilvm at the future or should I use dfsee in the future instead?

Meanwhile, I managed to install ArcaOS and it works really fine.

The only limitations I had with my AM4 board is:
- I need a USB Stick for ArcaOS 5.0.2 installation, DVD boot fails
- I have to select "modern hardware, safe mode" in the Pre-Instal menu, only 1 processor supported
- The problem discribed in this thread with the USB stick boot
- To install, you need a Bristol Ridge processor. Not only because of the USB stick problem with Ryzen G, also because you have to update your BIOS before installing the Ryzen G.

I have also installed Windows 10 32 bit, but I have problems since a BIOS update. The behaviour is the same with both processors. After the BIOS update, I cannot reinstal it (I get an early bluescreen aspi.sys error when booting from DVD), and on the installed Windows 10 32 bit installation, I cannot install AMD chipset/graphics drivers anymore and the start menu button is dead when clicking with the left mouse button. Right mouse button works. Searchfield is also dead.

264
If you try to install ArcaOS 5.0.2 on a Ryzen board, you have to
- install a PCIe USB 2.0 card, because there is no USB 2.0 controller onboard (only 3.0)
- in the pre install menu, use "modern hardware, safe mode".

Setup & Installation / Re: RAM disk and temp folders...what else?
« on: May 04, 2018, 02:06:58 pm »
Thank you. Indeed, it works all fine. The first time, I forgot to check the "ramdisk" checkbox.

A cosmetic problem: The shadow to the folder on the ramdisk is broken, of couse, because I create the folder in a cmd file located in the startup folder. So I have to use a config.sys command:
c:\os2\cmd.exe /c createfolders.cmd   (is this correct?)
(haven't tried yet.) But how can I be sure that the ramdisk is generated before executing the cmd file?

266
I have managed now to install two Windows and two ArcaOS (very useful for maintenance) on the same HD. The only rule to sucess is simply not to use primary partitons for ArcaOS, instead I have placed both ArcaOS installations to logical volumes.  Windows does only touch primary partions.

But I do not understand why I cannot reselect these logical partions in the ArcaOS installation program in the case of re-installing ArcaOS. Any idea?

I have got here a new ArcaOS 5.0.2 installation and I know that the USB stick stating mechanism uses a Ramdisk. But how can I implement a Ramdisk via Config.sys and orStartup folder? I have only found a program named HIDISK.EXE, there comes only a small dialog form with some settings, and the procedure to setup is not explained.

268
But the stick worked fine the past weeks. The problem only occurs when using the Ryzen G processor in the mainboard. Switching back to the old Bristol Ridge processor let the problem disappear.

269
I have switched on an AM4 board from Bristol Ridge processor to the newest Ryzen with Graphics processor Ryzen 2200G and tried to start from ArcaOS USB stick. I got this error message:

Code: [Select]
MemDisk 2011.05.01
Startup drive is floppy or hard disk (80).
Detecting extended memory size ... using INT 15 EAX=E820 'SMAP'
63 MB starting at 1 MB
Not enough memory

I failed before getting the pre-install menu.
It seems to be an incompatiblity for DOS programs (I assume the first steps on the ArcaOS USB Stick is in DOS).

I have tested it on two different AM4 boards (Asrock and Asus), same effect. Bristol Ridge works, Ryzen G fails.

Any ideas?

And what is the reason that the USB stick boot partion needs to be FAT32 ? Because the BIOS requires it?
