Setup & Installation / Re: How to convert a GPT disk with Win10 to MBR

You can change a disk from a GPT to an MBR partition style as long as the disk is empty and contains no volumes.
I don't want to delete the W10 installation.

DFSee does have an option to convert GPT to MBR. But does the installed W10 still work afterwards?

Thanks for all the replies. I've to work it through.

I try different things in parallel - adding ArcaOS to the installed SSD while preserving the W10 installation. And preparing a spare SSD with OS/2 - ArcaOS only at the same time. This spare SSD is dedicated to a new server I build but I'm testing it in the T540p too.

Neil, I don't know which video card is installed. But it is equipped with a 3k display. I never ever will buy anything below 1920x1200. HD resolution only, no chance ;-) Usually I can't work with less then 3840x1200 but our multi monitor setups are very limited :-( No clue if I ever get this 2880x1620 resolution working with OS/2. But I got this T540p for 385€ including the docking station and a second power supply. So I can't resist buying it.

I don't want to loose the Win10 installation. How can I convert the disk to MBR so I can add some OS/2 partitions?

Setup & Installation / T540p - OS/2 is unable to operate your hard disk
« on: October 12, 2019, 06:16:22 pm »
Anyone successfully installed ArcaOS or OS/2 on a T540p?

Trying install ArcaOS from USB Stick leads to a reboot after selecting 'Booting with default values'.

When putting in another harddisk with preinstalled eCS and ArcaOS on different partitions I always get 'OS/2 in unable to operate your hard disk'. Any hints to get this Thinkpad running?

I've disabled Hyperthreading and USB3 in BIOS. I also enabled Legacy boot. What else?

Hardware / Re: SNAP and dual-head display setup recommendations...
« on: September 19, 2019, 06:05:44 pm »
My about 10 years old desktop with ATI X300 is still my main machine cause of it's my only computer which can run dual-head with OS/2. As this card does only have on DVI and one analog RGB connector one monitor has to live with the analog signal.

I forgot the paragraph in the SNAP readme which restricts dual-head with digital interface to ATI chips. So the Matrox G650 with two DVI outputs I bought some days ago will be useless I fear :-(

SNAP/Panorama development - AFAIK Panorama will never get multi-head support. It's hard enough to keep/make Panorama working on new systems it seems. OTOH SNAP seems to be a very very big challenge to understand, get it compiled, hard to debug (for todays standards), extend ... We would need more than the very few developers we have who can explore the details of this beast and go where No One Has Gone the last decade.

I can't even imagine why anybody is still using File and print Client.
Cause it simply works and it is a lot faster than any other solution when used with many files. That's the reason why I'm still running it beside samba and ftp.

Which compiler suite do you want to use? And from which system/GUI toolkit do you want to port? Old windows code or from latest VS framework?

For SNAP and SMP you need ArcaOS. ...
I'm think there is nothing in the ArcaOS SNAP build which improves SMP interoperability. Of course ArcaNoae makes a pretty good job in improving OS/2 to be usable on more modern systems. So if you've some spare money buy ArcaOS licenses ;-). But if the latest free SNAP 3.1.8 doesn't work don't expect miracles from the AN version.

IIRC Jans FreeDOS DFSee version https://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/media.php has all these USB stuff integrated. Maybe you want to test his ready to go FreeDOS image.

Unauthorized - sounds like you're not authorized. Please don't ask why I'm authorized. I can't remember how I set it up anymore. Seems it was long ago. Is there nothing about in the AN wiki?

A few years ago I asked Timur Tabi some questions regarding OS/2 and multimedia. Although he don't use OS/2 since a very long time he answered politely and in detail. Maybe he still answers specific questions if you ask directly. I think he's the most knowledgeable guy in this field.

I beg to differ. The  32 bit test versions are noticeably faster (with USB 2),
What is noticeably faster? If you read what I wrote at the testers list you'll see there is nearly no speed difference when reading/writing to external disks. Different version of usbmsd make more difference than the 16/32 stacks. At least that's the result of my tests.

Maybe that changes with USB3. And maybe it's a good thing in the long term. But until your post above I didn't see anyone claiming there's a speed improvement for regular use cases.

Internet / Re: os2site.com access

A number of people have for one reason or another no access to os2site.com
The one reason I can think of is using a non OS/2 browser/system. If you need to access this site from another system I think it's enough to switch the user agent.

What are the other reasons?

I now found out that I always tried to connect to the google calendar with the SM integrated CalDAV or ICAL mechanism. This works on Win but with our SM only in one direction - fetching is okay but not sending something.

To use the 'Provider for Google Calender' you need to select the 4 line in the Format options when creating a new calendar called 'Google Kalender'. Not ICS or CalDAV. This way it works. Something I never thought of or maybe tested years ago without success and forgot.
