Applications / Re: SmartGit - Problem with File Mode (Modified (File Mode))
« on: September 17, 2018, 09:43:38 am »
I've read somewhere about 'core.autocrlf' setting 'true' is recommended for Win. Would this be a better option then fileMode? Or does it not work for us?

Thank you Dave.

Maybe start of the thread is to far away now ;)

git config core.fileMode false
Thanks. Just tested. It seems to work only for the current project tree which is fine. So I can use it for a few projects leaving the others untouched.

Java1.6 is 2.1.8a TTBOMK? You run this on OS/2-eCS or ArcaOS?
Running on eCS (heavily updated) is no big problem. Using here occasionally since years. But no newer version :(

Applications / SmartGit - Problem with File Mode (Modified (File Mode))
« on: September 16, 2018, 11:22:08 am »
I'm using SmartGit now more often and there's an annoying problem I have. Our last version which runs with Java1.6 is 2.1.8a TTBOMK. I use it with a few GIT servers and the problem is, in the file panel it shows a lot of files as changed although they are not. Under Working Tree State it says 'Modified (File Mode)'. This is even after a fresh pull.

I've searched all options but did not find any to disable this for file compare. Anyone knows an external file compare utility which works with SmartGit and does no show this File Mode changes? Any hints?

Setup & Installation / Re: New to ArcaOS, need some help.

After some testing it turned out the DFSee I got from the official page (15.3) might be having bugs with creating logical paritions.
I fear the problem is that everything running under OS/2 does see disks sometimes a bit different than looking at it from f.i. FreeDOS or Linux. That's why lot of people suggest doing all partitioning with DFSee running under OS/2 (booting from ArcaOS stick and running from the installer is fine).

Otherwise Jan would fix the problem immediately if there's really a bug in it. But he needs to know about. DFSee usually logs all activities and Jan is quit responsive when you discuss this at the DFSee support list or AN issue tracker.

I've uploaded a new testbuild. It includes latest changes from official development tree. I've updated some old OS/2 source files to current level where possible too. Some new options in wpa_supplicant.conf are enabled (the ones which does not stop compiling).

If you have pmprintf.dll on your system then the debug messages are routed there too. The output maybe better readable in the PM window than in the VIO.

I'm glad to hear you master DFSee :). A lot of people complain about it's complexity.

I guess you've read the information which comes with ArcaOS. I'm pretty sure there are places where it deals with different scenarios and how to prepare partitions for multi OS environment. This all should be manageable within the ArcaOS installer. Remember it includes a stripped down version of DFSee with a graphic GUI to hide the complexity. That said I guess it should not be necessary to use the standard DFSee boot USB-Stick, CD or floppy. Although there is nothing wrong in using the full version of DFSee (I personally prefer doing so) the makers of ArcaOS tries to handle such things with their installer in a user friendly way (sort of ;) ).

To get to the point - if you follow the AcraOS documentation and still can not install then open a ticket with AN. I'm pretty sure they are interested in improving the installer and partitioning GUI. Most of the testers are long time OS/2 users and they know the workarounds and tricks to get it installed. It seems to me you're a perfect candidate for a good usability tester. Not with the straitened vision we long time users have.

Tell me that when os2ahci actually sees and works with the ASMedia ahci chips.  ...
I do not see any evidence that this thread is about shortcomings of ASMedia chips before this post of you. I didn't talk about problems with your chip nor os2ahci may having problems with your board. Or more likely ACPI shutdown may not work correct on your system. I think I've clearly quoted what I'm talking about.

Believe it or not, wear leveling is the job of the SSD controller.

wear levelling
Does make every SSD by itself since ages. Even CF-cards does it since the beginning. Only SD-Cards and maybe USB-Sticks don't do it. So no problem with any SSD.

We do not have such utility. But as said before, not really necessary since years. If you really like you can create a new partition and copy over data every 5 years or so if you feel better, but....

flushing the delay write cache
AFAIK the command is implemented in the driver since many years. Probably since the beginning of os2ahci. There are some comments about in xwp shutdown code from some experts which let me believe that such issues were addressed since many years. 2009 or so.

In the end you end up with some cells that are over worked and don't retain their status as long as they should.
Hard to believe as the whole wear leveling stuff is the job of the controller on the drive. It's not influenced by any OS or OS driver. Of course there are differences in quality, reliability and durability as with all other electronic components. Pick a trusty manufacturer and you hardly can damage it with OS/2 usage patterns. Which does not mean there will never be a failure. If you are the one in millions ....

Applications / Re: VirtualBox v5.0.51 Testing
« on: August 05, 2018, 12:12:16 pm »
> It seems "enable VT-x / AMD-V" are enabled by default in the settings. I was not sure about that previously in my posts to Valery in the thread "VirtualBox Problems" as the original VM I had created (Windows XP) was done under Windows 7 and Windows VirtualBox v5.0.22, so I wasn't sure if I had fiddled with the settings at some point.

No, I just created the new VM from scratch, VT-x/AMD-V is disabled. In any case, disable it if it enabled, for some weird reason (unless you have one of the latest OS/4 kernels).
I came over this again as I set up a new VM with a FreeBSD image. VT-x/AMD-V was enabled here. This is with v5.0.6_OSEr143. A slightly newer version as the official linked at http://trac.netlabs.org/vbox/wiki.

I know this thread is about v5.0.51 but I think VBOX for OS/2 lacks some update on the official wiki page (and the included readme). Although I'm running some VMs inside VBOX I didn't remember the proper settings anymore. Valery please update the wiki page. Especially the necessary/recommended settings for VT-x, IO-APIC, PAE/NX, preferred network mode (which one works reliable), best network adapter setting (I read somewhere some Intel server card should be choosen), ... Of course settings for ArcaOS/eCS are needed. Special instructions for unofficial kernels may need an own paragraph. It's really hard to read all postings to find them out. At least a link at http://trac.netlabs.org/vbox/wiki to the current (updated) readme would be much appreciated. Thanks.

General Discussion / Re: IBM DDK License Discussion

How can I prove that I am a legal DDK user if  some body asks ?
Who do you think will ask? You wouldn't have your copy if you did not have 'Agree'ed back then when you downloaded it like I did. I know I had to click 'Agree' at the bottom of a long text before I got to the page where I could download the files. In theory IBM may have recorded my IP but I think no one will and can trace back which IP the company used about 15 years ago when I downloaded it. Maybe I had to register with an email address but I don't know anymore.

You do not have to prove that you do nothing illegal. It's the other way around - you are not guilty until someone proves you are. That's the way the justice works in civilized countries (of course we know some arguments from some people are taken more serious than others but that's hardly related here).

Anyway you're restricted to the license you 'Agree'ed independently if you still remember the wording. I don't. But I'm pretty sure it does not allow me to share copies of the sources but I can build my own drivers with them and share the binaries. The sources include -
Code: [Select]
/*    You may use this code in accordance with the IBM License      */
/*    Agreement provided in the IBM Developer Connection Device Driver       */
So if I ever would share my sourced build upon the DDK I would have to search for that.

Btw. my copy does not include a license other then the note above.

Storage / Re: PMSHELL

I would say no. Of course it's possible to monitor memory usage (above512 and others) and fragmentation (interpret Theseus memory information and calculate the gaps) but what is the value when you should be warned about to 'low' memory?

From the kernels POV memory is not to 'low' until an application request memory and the kernel can not fulfill this request. Not earlier. Moreover even if you think some memory is low (as above512 tells you) you do not know if there is some large block already freed by some application somewhere. The kernel knows this can be given to another application if requested  (interpret Theseus and you may know too). But it depends on the value of memory the application requests. You don't know beforehand how much memory f.i. a java script wants to allocate before this specific one runs and makes the request to the OS.

When it comes to defragmentation it's simply not possible AFAIK. The kernel would need to to tell some application to free some specific memory. But neither the kernel nor the applications have implemented such algorithm.

For this point of your post I've a slightly different POV. Luckily all BWW projects talked about in this thread are open software and freely available. In contrary to OS/2 components and some AN projects. BWW stuff is usually easy to build and sufficiently documented. You can fix bugs if you're skilled enough relatively easy. A big difference IMHO.

Why oh why don't those porting firefox and other programs supply a zip file containing ALL the various DLLs that they use to have it working?
This was discussed numerous times. Maybe the whole process is too complex to understand for simple minded users? I don't know.

Quote
That way there shouldn't be the dll hell we appear to have with versions of RPM files from odd experimental repositories or even those not in any repository yet.
The dll hell starts if you mix your different zipped dlls together and that's the reason why the full rpm way is the only one to go currently. And don't say YOU are keen enough to clean up all dlls which would come with all the different packages manually. 99.99% of the OS/2 users proofed they can not.

General Discussion / Re: Display issue !
« on: July 19, 2018, 09:26:17 am »
I think it's the known graphic problem which shows up on modern BIOSes sometimes. It looks like the well know issue which causes rock solid hangs when switching to full screen sessions sometimes. You can test this with opening cmd windows in full screen and switching back and forth. But the 'known' problem does not occur every time so you've to test often to reproduce the hang.

As CAD tries to open a full screen session this sounds to be the case with Remy. But there are other not so obvious reasons when OS/2 tries to switch to full screen. F.i. when OS/2 detects IP address conflicts or when it traps. The graphic system can not reliable switch to full screen on a lot of modern boards. Currently it's not clear if these are BIOS issues or Panorama problems or some problem in the OS/2 graphic system components.
