Applications / Smaller OS/2 booting
« on: January 10, 2014, 03:39:13 pm »
I remembered that sometime ago I tried see what can be the smaller OS/2 implementation and try to see which are OS/2's vitals files, just for fun.

So, what I did, I installed OS/2 Warp 4.52 on a Virtual Machine and installed it without anything.

After that I tried to delete all the files possible with the objective that OS/2 will only boot and give the me a WPS environment. With Mouse and Keyboard working and the basic WPS (e.exe, warpcenter and cdrom, floppy support was kept for sentimental reasons)

Sure, maybe this version of OS/2 it is not usable, no TCP/IP, no MMOS2, nothing interesting on it, nada...., but it was only an exercise to see which was the vital files of the system.  This VM would no even support a  reboot since the check disk stuff is not there.

Later I tried to see which files already had some open source replacement or can be easily replaced, and marked them with green, according to my knowledge.

Look at my spreadsheet.

If you know any other open source replacement to this files/components please let me know.

General Discussion / Internet Archive - I need some help.
« on: January 08, 2014, 08:54:04 pm »
I contacted someone from the Internet Archive to see the possibility to preserve OS/2 installers.
For the moment we are looking to start with the OS/2 1.x versions

I only have this versions of OS/2 1.x:

Microsoft OS/2 1.x
   Microsoft OS2 1.0 - English - Diskettes
   Microsoft OS2 1.1 - English  - Diskettes
   Microsoft OS2 1.3 - English - Diskettes

IBM OS2 1.x
IBM OS2 1.2 Standard Edition (SE) - English - Diskettes
IBM OS2 1.20 Extended Edition (EE) - English - Diskettes
IBM OS2 1.30.1 Extended Edition (EE) - English - Diskettes

I'm obviously missing  IBM OS/2 1.3 Standard Edition.

Can you please tell me if there are more?
Any more languages for this versions?
I'm looking also for nice scans of the packages.

(You are also free to contact me privately about this)

Hardware / Intel Desktop Board DB85FL and Intel Core i7-4770 Processor
« on: January 05, 2014, 02:37:30 pm »
It just happened that this weekend a newer Intel machine clone passed by my hands and I installed eComStation 2.2 Beta 2 just to try it out before giving the machine to the owner :)

This was an:

I posted the review here: http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Intel_Desktop_Board_DB85FL

This mainboard has an UEFI Bios, but it has legacy mode enabled on the BIOS, so it was able to boot eComStation.

Please notice that the information may not be 100% accurate since I didn't have the time to test everything.

General Discussion / What is European Software Solutions - XEU.com ?
« on: January 01, 2014, 06:41:33 pm »
Today I was checking Mensys site and I found that it started to reference XEU.com.

On it's web site it says that one of their main software package is eCS/2 (or eComStation). It seems to be a branch of Mensys, or a company that it separating from Mensys to be focused on software development.

Does anybody know about it? Is it old news that I just found out?

Applications / VRML/2
« on: December 22, 2013, 11:56:43 pm »
Hi.

I got permission from the author to turn "VRML/2" as freeware, sadly he does not longer has the source code or binaries.

But I'm having a problem running "VRML/2". I installed OpenGL 1.1 but the applications runs and quit.

POPUPLOG says me:

Any tips to make VRML/2 work?

Utilities / Changing OS/2's REXX
« on: December 10, 2013, 02:11:55 pm »
Hi

I was wondering if it can be possible to replace our currently IBM's close source REXX on eComStation with an open source implementation of REXX.

There is available Regina REXX for OS/2 - Open source (LGPL) implementation of REXX, but I don't know if this can be a full replacement for current REXX on eComStation.
What is missing on Regina REXX that we currently have on IBM's REXX?
What will break if we try to remove IBM's REXX from eComStation and replace it with Regina REXX?

Please let me know your feedback. I really don't know much about this subject.

Hardware / Can eCS run on a Chromebook?
« on: December 08, 2013, 01:15:33 am »
I really don't know much about the Chromebooks. Just today checking on Amazon's best selling laptops I found several Chromebooks.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics/565108/ref=sr_bs_1

There is the Samsung one that has an ARM processor, so that's for sure that eCS can not run on that one.

But what about:
- Acer C720 Chromebook (11.6-Inch, Haswell micro-architecture, 2GB)  ($199)   - Processor 1.4 GHz Intel Celeron ?
or
- Acer C710-2834 11.6-Inch Chromebook (Iron Gray) ($199) - Processor 1.5 GHz Intel Celeron 1007U ?

Reading about it, it seem seems that you can not install Windows on Chromebook either. From what I read even the Chromebooks that has Intel processors has a non Windows-compatible BIOS, so this may means that there is no chance to run eCS on that ones too.

But it seems you can run eCS inside a virtual machine on a Chromebook, but it will be interesting to try it someday.

Any thoughts?

Applications / eCS 2.1 VM on VMWare ESXi
« on: November 27, 2013, 06:59:10 pm »
Hi

Today I tried to install eComStation 2.1 on VMWare ESXi Server.  It seems to work fine.

I posted some information about it on the OS2World.com Wiki:
http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/VMWare_ESXi

If someone will like to add something, feel free to edit the wiki (same userid and password of this forum).

Applications / NTFS /Q
« on: November 26, 2013, 02:07:28 pm »
On 2010 I opened this issue as part of my "UX Suggestion for eComStation" article:

http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/view.php?id=2895#bugnotes

Quote
Using NTFS.IFS version 2.017.

when loading NTFS.IFS /Q still shows copyright.
"Product of Serenity System...."

I had tried IFS=X:\OS2\NTFS.IFS /Q and /S, but verbose mode can not be disabled.

Today I got this reply from Roderick:

Quote
This driver is still included in eCS. but we no longer support it. While I admit NTFS access is needed. We currently do not have the human resources to fix the driver. Since eCS 2.1 we also switch it optionally.

For beyond version 2.2 we are considering looking at getting a full license of
Virtual File System Driver because it has an NTFS plugin. Also we can then offer a better NFS client then the one we now use.

Closed:     Resolution:     open => won't fix

Sadly I can not put more comments on closed issue . (or I don't know how).

A good solution will be to open source NTFS driver and let the community fix this trivial thing. I know someone that can hep me with this.
But I don't know if Mensys has the right to open source NTFS.

Article Discussions / OS2World on Wikipedia
« on: November 20, 2013, 09:45:01 pm »
I noticed that some other websites has articles on the Wikipedia. So, I think about it, and a wrote a little article about this site:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS2World

It had been fun getting some information about the things that we done and trying to documented it there.

Sadly the article was mark for deletion saying "that does not credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject", but you can help me to "contest it".

Let's see what happen, it will not kill me to have my article deleted but it will be nice to be on an encyclopedia.

...and of course your are free to change the Wikipedia article according to facts.

Article Discussions / WPS Classes Clone
« on: November 17, 2013, 02:39:38 pm »
I'm opening this thread to discuss the WPS Classes clone idea. I'm sorry I hijacked other threads.

Why WPS?

I'm learning more about WPS with time, but I still think that is a valid approach for creating the resources that manage the OS/2-eCS desktop.

The Re-usability idea
When you create a new class to create a new object on WPS you don't start from scratch. You have several other classes that you can re-use to build your class (WPClass, WPObject...all)

Look for example the HWman class replacement. The goal of this was to improve some issues that the original "Hardware Manager" has.  The author did not start creating a "Hardware Manager" by scratch. He made a "child" of the hardware manager class (HWManager) and replaced (overide) only the functionality that has the issues.  So in fact he coded less.

Expandable
You can also expand the functionality of objects on the WPS. By creating a "child" of the classes you can expand

Just look again the HWman class replacement. The author fixed the behavior of a close source program. I had never saw that, in general if you don't have the source code of the program, you can not expand it or improve it.

Down Side
But I also think there are some downsides:
- We depend on the old IBM somcompiler. (sc.exe)
- We need to learn how WPS works before improving it / replacing it with OSS components.
- Having this flexibility also grows the complexity. We need to have and understanding on how are the WPS Classes structured.

Actions:
For the moment my actions are simple on this subject:
- Trying to include more documentation about WPS on the EDM/2 Wiki
- I'm trying to document the UML visual design of WPS Classes (attachment included).

If anybody wants to help me with this starting point I will appreciate it. It does not matter if only have some minutes at week.

My UML is very rusty.

http://tech.slashdot.org/story/13/11/15/1446258/menuetos-an-os-written-entirely-in-assembly-language-inches-towards-10

"MenuetOS is an open source, GUI-equipped, x86 operating system written entirely in assembly language that can fit on a floppy disk (if you can find one). I originally spoke to its developers in 2009. Recently I had a chance to catch up with them to chat about what's changed and what needs to be done before the OS hits version 1.0 after 13 years of work. The system's creator, Ville Turjanmaa, says, 'Timeframe is secondary. It's more important is to have a complete and working set of features and applications. Sometimes a specific time limit rushes application development to the point of delivering incomplete code, which we want to avoid. ... We support USB devices, such storages, printers, webcams and digital TV tuners, and have basic network clients and servers. So before 1.0 we need to improve the existing code and make sure everything is working fine. ... The main thing for 1.0 is to have all application groups available'"

This was posted on Slashdot.org.

http://news.slashdot.org/story/13/11/12/157227/the-state-of-reactoss-crazy-open-source-windows-replacement

jeditobe writes with a link to a talk (video recorded, with transcript) about a project we've been posting about for years: ambitious Windows-replacement ReactOS: "In this talk, Alex Ionescu, lead kernel developer for the ReactOS project since 2004 (and recently returning after a long hiatus) will talk about the project's current state, having just passed revision 60000 in the SVN repository. Alex will also cover some of the project's goals, the development and testing methodology being such a massive undertaking (an open source project to reimplement all of Windows from scratch!), partnership with other open source projects (MinGW, Wine, Haiku, etc...). Alex will talk both about the infrastructure side about running such a massive OS project (but without Linux's corporate resources), as well as the day-to-day development challenges of a highly distributed team and the lack of Win32 internals knowledge that makes it hard to recruit. Finally, Alex will do a few demos of the OS, try out a few games and applications, Internet access, etc, and of course, show off a few blue screens of death."
