Title: Calibre for ebooks etc...
Post by: Remy on November 12, 2021, 02:57:58 pm
Hi!

I don't know if it may be possible.
Do you think Calibre could be ported to OS/2 QT5 ?
(May be someone else experimented to transport QT5 appls could contact them! It looks to be a great application, using it a lot under windows...)

Wow, this seems to be a pretty feature packed application.

There is a nice DEMO of it's capabilities https://calibre-ebook.com/demo (https://calibre-ebook.com/demo), about 10 mins video.

As to the question you asked Remy: judging by the details in the d/l section (Linux) it would appear there are numerous dependencies, probably the challenge for us would be in making sure all of these are available.

Looking quickly at the prerequisites, while we have most and some we don't have should be trivial to port, there are a couple I don't know and others like libmtp (to download files from the phone over USB) that might be a challenge. Then there's libfii which likely means manually calling our API manually from Python, eg using DosRead() by pushing the arguments correctly on the stack, calling the right memory location and manually dealing with the returned file read kind of thing. Probably need someone who really knows the underlying basics of OS/2 and with time to do tedious programming but that is just a guess.
Then if there are bugs in our Python, they might need fixing.
Might be easier to build a partially functioning Calibre. Still need someone who knows Python as well as porting.

I do use Calibre (Win version) a lot to manage my ePUB books for my Sony PRS2 Reader. It would be amazing having this application running natively under OS/2.

3 screenshots about calibre portable (windows)
- Reading a book (epub), pdfs can be read inline or through default pdf reader
- Books list with cover view (on the right side, the selected book is an epub ...
- Books convertion (the selected book can be converted into an other book format (e.g. pdf) if allowed (DRM protection)

Way back in 2010 Paul did a port of Sigil e-pub editor for QT4.  It is a bit long in the tooth but still works for simple production of e-pub books, just dont expect any smart features.

I don't know if it is still up on Paul's site but I don't think so.  If you want a copy let me know and I will post the zip I have here.

There is still an extension for OpenOffice called "Writer2ePub" to create epub.

Hi Ivan

Is there a link for the "Sigil e-pub editor" port? I want to give it a try.

Hi Martin,

For some strange reason the site doesn't like the zip file ( over 2Mb ).  I will see about uploading it to somewhere else for download.

The official site for sigil is https://sigil-ebook.com and the source can be downloaded from github.

Hi Ivan

Please try again to post the OS/2 ported file. The Max size on the forum is 10MB now. If you still have problem please post it on some temp site like WeTransfer.
