I have an ASUS Prime B550M-A running with a Ryzen 5 3400G and it's fine except for I haven't got sound running yet.
Matt W.

Hello Matt:

I plan to install ArcaOS on an ASUS Prime B550-Plus mobo.  What version of ArcaOS did you install on your Prime B550M-A?  ArcaOS 5.07 or an earlier version?   Which medium did you use: DVD or USB flash-drive?

Thanks

Joe

Setup & Installation / Re: Problem with Win 7 and ArcaOS 5.3 installation

Thomas:

I take it you are trying to set up dual boot on a large HDD or SSD, a task that I've found frustrating.  Your opening post suggests you have started off well, you made your drive a Master Boot Record (MBR) drive.  That's not just a good start, it is a necessary start.  ArcaOS, eCS and OS/2 currently must be installed on a MBR drive so you will need to install Windows on a MBR drive if you want dual boot Windows 7 and ArcaOS.  However, when I have installed Windows in the same order as you I get similar problems.

Here is my work-arrouund:
  • Use two HDDs or SDDs, your large dual-boot drive and a smaller drive,  The size of the smaller drive should at least be as large as the size of  the partition onto which you plan to install Windows on the dual-boot drive;
  • Set-up both drives asMBR drives
  • Install ArcaOS in a logical volume at the end of your large HDD, but leave free space in the front of your large HDD that will be large enough for your planned Windows 7 partition (plan to make the Windows 7 partition a primary partition);
  • Install Windows 7 on the smaller MBR drive;
  • Note the size off the two primary partitions Windows 7 sets up on your smaller MBR drive.  You will only need the large partition if you make it directly bootable;
  • Next, you "must install the windows boot support to the C: drive, so that it can boot, without using the hidden partition.
            Open a Command line, by selecting Start-> All programs-> Accessories-> RMB click on the Command Prompt item-> Click on Run as administrator. The command line should open.
            Type the command:

    bcdboot c:\windows /s c:

    It should install successfully";
  • Test this partition on the smaller HDD
  • Creat a primary partition in the free space in the front of your larger HDD, a partition that is slightly larger that the Windows 7 partition on your smaller HDD;
  • Use DFSee to clone Windows 7 partition from the smaller HDD to into the new new empty partition your large HDD.  Be sure you clone the Windows7 partition not the whole drive.
  • Use the ArcaOS installation/maintenance DVD to reinstall MBR on your larger HDD;
  • Boot up AIR Boot, select and boot up your Windows 7 partition and you should be set -to-go.]

Setup & Installation / Re: How to convert a GPT disk with Win10 to MBR

Thanks Doug et al:

I've used Acronis in the past.  It works well.  I'll try setting up a dual boot Windows 10 /ArcaOS laptop in next few days using Acronis and DFSee.

Andi:

If you have an opportunity to pose your question to Jan please let us know what he tells you.

I took a quick look at DFSee 15.3.  DFSee will clone partitions but it is unclear to me whether DFSee will clone a partition from a GPT disk to a MBR disk, and if so whether the MBR clone will thereafter boot with AirBoot.

With Windows 7 reaching the final end of its service life I've been trying to setup a Thinkpad to dual boot to ArcaOS and Windows 10.  I am having a devil of a time with it.  If and when I can actually get Windows 8.1 or 10 to install it crush not only AirBoot but reformats my ArcaOS partition at the end of the drive.

Brothers' MFC-L8850CDW, a multifunction color printer, scanner and fax machine, has worked well for me under eCS 2.2 beta II and Arca Noae  (eCS for many a year).  Brother provides an excellent PScript 3 driver that works well when imported into eCS and Arca Noae.   One may print to it wirelessly using SLPR.  One can print in color and in duplex.  MFC-L8850CDW's scanner can be operated via a browser.  I have never used the fax function.

I think that ... that [the GA] will be the latest available, stable, software, packaged with a new installer.
Thanks for your response above Doug.

Based on my experienced described above, the new installer is the number one must do upgrade.  Bring incremental currently available driver and software updates into the installation DVD will be much appreciate but updating the installer is the number one must do.

I am not surprised that a USB floppy drive did not work. USBMSD. ADD
 version 10.162,latest version from IBM is not working well. As a test you can download my latest usbdrv215. zip from Hobbes.nmsu.edu. I have tested with a Mitsumi floppy drive.
Of course that will not help you with your boot CD.
Thanks Lar:

I'll give usbdrv215 as try.

It is good to hear that you are beta testing on AMD CPUs.   In my experience UEFI is the biggest roadblock when installing eCS 2.2b2 on modern hardware.

Can you describe the problems, so I can test for them?

I didn't have any trouble installing eCS 2.2b2 to my A6 with UEFI. The only problem that I had installing to my Lenovo ThinkPad L530 (Intel) with UEFI, is that I need the QSINIT loader to have access to more than 512 meg of memory. Sound doesn't work properly in either one, but that is UniAud, not eCS 2.2b2 itself. ArcaOS beta is still waiting for a new UniAud (don't know what will be in the GA).

I had to go into the motherboard 'bios' and switch the motherboard to 'Legacy Mode' to install eCS 2.2b2 on my ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0.  No surprise there I expect.  The CPU is an 8 core FX 8320E.  The harddrive is a SATA 3 SSD.  The onboard NIC works and I'm happy with the machine's performmance for now.

Installing eCS 2.2b2 directly on the TP E555 was impossible though.  My workaround was to do the install on a SSD in a Thinkpad EDGE E525 and then to remove the SSD and reinstall the SSD in my TP E555.

I suspect that may have something to do with the SSD. I don't have one of them, but I do know that boot timing, on faster systems, can cause problems. SSD speeds it up even more, so it is entirely possible that something messes up during boot. So far, I haven't seen any hint of boot timing problems, with ArcaOS, but that depends on the hardware, and I haven't tested with all of my systems, yet.

Again I had to go into the motherboard 'bios' and switch the motherboard to 'Legacy Mode'.  Thereafter three problems arose during installation on the Lenovo TP E555:
1) Loading of the virtual floppies into RAM would stall around 2/3rd the time on varying installation disks (1st, 2nd or 3rd),
2) There was a problem with selection of system drivers (I forget the details), and
3) Either the onboard laptop keyboard or the laptop touchpad would not work, sometimes both, sometimes the problem would switch from one device to the other.

I ended up disabling the two USB3 ports and reverted to USB2 in 'bios', attached USB keyboard and USB mouse but was unable to access a USB floppy drive to load in the eCS key.  Only two USB devices worked at a time.

It is good to hear that you are beta testing on AMD CPUs.   In my experience UEFI is the biggest roadblock when installing eCS 2.2b2 on modern hardware.   eCS 2.2b2 runs OK on my 8 core AMD FX CPU and on my TP EDGE E555  with an AMD A10.  Installing eCS 2.2b2 directly on the TP E555 was impossible though.  My workaround was to do the install on a SSD in a Thinkpad EDGE E525 and then to remove the SSD and reinstall the SSD in my TP E555.

Hardware / Re: Anyone successfully using Brother HL-5470dw?
« on: December 06, 2015, 02:30:27 am »
I would expect Brother's Postscript drive to work, if it is properly imported into OS/2-eCS by way of instprn.  I was able to so use Brother's  Windows version of its postscript drivers (*.PPD) to print in eCS on Brother's HL-3070CND, HL-4070CDW and MFC-L8850CDW.  Note that I had to clean and import it into eCS with instprn.  I could not get the CUPS Linux version of the Brother's PPD to work however.

Hi All

My favourite apps that are not open source - not in order of importance or use:-

...

VirtualPC for OS/2 - not used that often these days as I cannot to figure out how to install Windows7 32bit into a vpc from the Windows7 Ultimate DVD; Could anyone who knows how to do this create a "How To" in a new thread please...

Regards

Pete

I regularly use VirtualPC and VirtualBox with OS/2-eCS as host.
I have installed and I run various flavors of Windows 7 in VirtualBox OSE v1.61(both P. Smedley's and T. Ebisawa's).  So far I have been unable to install Windows 7 in VirtualPC v5.1 or in VirtualBox v1.56.

Thanks again Doug.

I joined the Virtual User mail list solely to monitor the discussion.   One can learn much by quietly listening ;-)

I've had luck installing various OS's in VBox 1.61 with eCS as host (and only in v1.61) from iso files downloadable from http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/

I'll look into HP all-in-ones.

I suggest that you look at the Virtual Users mail list:

To subscribe, E-mail to: <virtualized_ecs_users-on@2rosenthals.com> and reply to the confirmation email.
Web archives are publicly available at: http://lists.2rosenthals.com...

FWIW, I do have a VBOX 1.6.1 set up under eCS. I run WinXP in it. ... Sound must be turned on by running a command, but it is generally not very useable. You will find that it is best to define a SoundBlaster device, for the guest, rather than a more advanced sound device. The overhead is much less.

... I can also use my WiFi connected HP D110a printer, over the network. My brother uses a Canon WiFi connected printer, although doing so is rarely (never) required.

  - USB proxying.
    Does not work.

Thank you for recommending the Virtual Users mail list. I signed up for it this morning.

I run Win XP as a guest (with eCS 2.2 beta as a host) in Virtual PC 5.1 and in Virtual Bo 1.61.  Win XP seems to run a bit better in VPC.  I have however been able to install and run the 32 bit version of Win 7 in Virtual Box 1.61 with eCS as a host.   I have had no such luck with Win 7 in VPC.  The Windows 2008 Server setting in VBox works for Win 7.  You will need to use the AMD nic from Windows 2003 Server though to get network working.   I have not been able to install Windows 8 though.

Can you say what Canon Wifi connected printer your brother uses?

Thanks
Joe Kempf

Lewis,

I seem to recall that one of Serenity System's early products was a product that could easily push configurations and applications from a central server out to multiple workstations.  Unfortunately i can't recall the name of that product, but I do seem to recall it worked fairly well.  Any idea what happened to that software (and did you happen to get the rights to it as a part of this announcement)?

Just curious.

I recall that too.  My memory is faulty here, but I seem to recall that Bob St. John and Kim Cheung were working with a concept of rippling a slimmed down workstation or smart terminal off of a mainframe or a server.  I doubt I understood the concept though.  Might Serenity Managed Client be the application you have in mind?

That is one of the boards we have on order for testing as a possible replacement for all our workstations.  One of the reasons we are looking at it and the ASUS A88XM-Plus is that they have real com ports even if you have to supply the necessary socket and cable. ...

For sound you may have to experiment to find the best version of uniaud that works with what you have.

Ivan, did choose that ASUS A88XM-Plus?  And if so, which version of uniaud worked for you?

Thanks

Joe
