Hi klipp

I do not think that cups is finding 2 printers:-

They look identical, but when you click on them the connection is different:
USB:/HP/HP%20Color%20LaserJet%20CP2025dn?serial=00CNGS467706
socket://192.168.1.140

What it looks like it is finding is 2 *Connections* - Did you have it USB and (W)LAN connected?

The cups test page seems to be designed to confuse people: There is only 1 page so why cups often reports "Processing page 2..." I do not know.

Have you installed the current hplip software? If not I will take a guess that printing failed when using the 2025.ppd because hplip is required - but I could be wrong.

With regard to selecting the printer PPD file: Make sure you select the version with "Simplified" in the filename as these tend to work better with pscript.drv and, in my limited experience, with psprint.drv from Alex.

Are you using pscript.drv? - If "Yes" maybe you want to try adding the PPD file to psprint.drv instead - see http://www.altsan.org/os2/printing - and create your Desktop printer in the hope that will "cure" some problems printing from OS/2 apps. If you try this work through the instructions in the Readme carefully.

As for your remark "Looks like Pete is right (as usual)!" I will let you argue that with my wife who has a slightly different opinion  ;-)

Hi klipp

Looks like the linux cups support for the hp 2025dn requires the hplip package see http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/color_laserjet/hp_color_laserjet_cp2025dn.html

However, if using the cups cp2020 delivers a test page then it should work fine - with the possibility that the 2025 printers capability may not be fully supported.

Possible cause of failure to print from Seamonkey/Openoffice through the OS/2 Desktop printer to cups - with the apps crashing/exiting - is a DLL file mismatch or missing DLL file(s). I suggest making sure that you do not have older/incorrect copies of DLL files hanging around.

You could use a "dependancy checker" such as pmdll -  http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/system/pmdll-2.11.zip  - to see if you have any missing/not found (ie not on libpath) DLLs reported.

Another possibility is that something went wrong when cupswiz was creating the Desktop Printer Object - but this seems less likely as you had the same problem when you manually created The Desktop Printer Object previously on a different system.

I have not used cupswiz for a while but do not remember it installing 2 printers to select from. Maybe something did go wrong there...

You could use prndrv.exe -  http://www.os2site.com/sw/comm/faxworks/prndrv.exe  - to check what printer(s) cupswiz has set up and delete any unwanted bits.

Hope something above helps

Hi All

@Dave

RMB on the small square produces the system RMB menu.

If I Maximize the app then I can RMB click on the app display space and see the apps options. "Show all ..." works but "Rebuild Form" can result in a crash.

I have tried this several times now: Clicking on the Min/Max button when Maximised can result in the app becoming a small square again. Maximizing the app and clicking Rebuild Form may cause the app to crash but when restarted the app is back to a reasonable size rather than Maximized or "Ultra-Minimized".

Deleting the pmunimix.ini file simply deletes the last window position of the app so does not affect this behaviour.

I have sent Dave an email about the problems I have seen. I see that the app is built using Sibyl 2 fixpack3 which is possibly the cause of the problems so will suggest to Dave that he has a look at building using the current WDSibyl which has been a little updated since Sibyl 2 fp3

I shall also suggest to Dave that "Show all controls" should have an option to "stick" when the app is closed and restarted rather than reverting to the previous state of not all controls.

@Doug

I suspect that the app is starting minimized and almost "off screen".

Delete the pmunimix.ini file and try the app again.

If that does not work open the pmunimix.ini file - should be whereever you have put pmunimix - using an ini editor and change the Window Position; set X as 230 and Y as 300 (makes sure it is definitely onscreen), save and close ini editor, try running app.

Hi

Hopefully this new PMunimix will work better for others than it does for me.

PMunimix started fine but when I turned off some settings PMunimix gradually disappeared - as the settings were turned off the app window size was adjusted and the settings  were no longer displayed onscreen.

Initially I was left with Master Volume and Front Speakers but having turned them off to confirm previous results I now do not see the app onscreen - Sorry, I tell a lie, there is a small square of gray/grey onscreen which when I right mouse button and select Maximize turns into PMunimix fullscreen without any available mixer settings at all.

I'm fairly sure this is not working as expected...

Setup & Installation / Re: Canon MG7550 issues
« on: June 28, 2015, 11:59:02 pm »
Hi Mat

The auto selection of input tray based on media selected by user must work with bjnp - that is what is used in Windows7 here - although whether our current builds of bjnp support this I do not know.

What ppd file is in use in your Mint cups setup? - ie is it a gutenprint generated file or a Canon supplied ppd file?

If it is a gutenprint file I would not mind a copy to compare with the gutenprint mg7150.ppd file.

Hi Mat

Do *not* bother trying to import the Canon linux ppd file - been there, done that, does not work  :-(

Looking in the Canon supplied ppd file I do not see any mention of "Cassette", "input slot", "cd", "tray" - in fact nothing to select what paper input to use. I suspect that the logic is built into the Canon driver to select the correct input tray based on media size - probably works that way with the Windows driver as well.

Paul very kindly ported the Canon linux driver for me but Canon have not open sourced a library which is required to make it all work - probably the bit that selects the correct input tray for the media selected  :-)

So, we are either waiting for an updated cups/gutenprint to work correctly or we can try hassling Canon to get the closed source bit that is needed with their drivers released as open source or, possibly, enter some sort of Non Disclosure Agreement  with Canon to port their closed source bit to OS/2 for them. Both Canon options are highly unlikely.

I do not have any experience of writing ppd file but am wondering if it is possible to add the missing Cassette to the ppd file section *OpenUI *InputSlot/Media Source: PickOne
I am not sure what else would need editing/adding to make it work.

I am not likely to get the time to try this for a week or several myself as we have just moved house and there is lots to do before Herself will let me "play on computer for hours"  ;-)

Hi Einar

Maybe it is the use of psprint that is slowing down the ps file generation.

Have you tried using the epson PPD file with the IBM ps driver?

Hi Mat

I bumped into this paper size error problem and ended up disabling the setting on the printer that checks paper size.

I did this simply because under Windows7 the *Default* driver setting is something like "Ignore paper size" ie this does not work properly under Windows!

I guess it could be my Windows7 system that somehow set this; if you have Windows7 run the MG7550 install then check the driver settings.

Must admit that I have not yet tried using cassette 1... without looking up the specs for the MG7150 maybe that did not have 2 cassettes. Looking at the \cup\etc\cups\ppd\mg7550.ppd file I see only 1 "input slot"  which is named "cassette".

Looks like we are waiting for cups to catch up with the hardware  - no real surprise for OS/2 users to have to wait for software driver(s) to catch up with hardware  :-)

Hi klipp

The HP printers supported by hplip that do *NOT* need a closed source plugin from HP should work with eCUPS and hplip on OS/2 based systems.

I think it is a bit sad of manufacturers to "open source" drivers but introduce a closed source element, "plugin",  that is necessary for the device to function. I nearly had the same problem with my Cannon MG7550 which needs a Cannon closed source plugin to operate the Cannon "open source" linux drivers. Luckily eCUPS and sane both work well enough without needing any of the "open source" driver bits otherwise my Cannon MG7550 would be simply an overlarge paperweight.

Hi klipp

According to http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_cp1025nw.html this printer requires a driver plugin for linux that is *not* open source.

Based on that information I doubt you will find anyone running this printer as an OS/2 printer - unless they have developed their own driver.

If you have just purchased this printer and not used it maybe you will be able to persuade the shop to take it back - they might prefer you to purchase a replacement printer from them at the same time though. Check what printers they have in stock that you like the look of then go away and check the specifications of those printers. If a printer requires a closed source plugin of some sort then delete it from your list of possible printers.

Hi Renee

Have you emailed Paul directly and asked if/when he may have time to port this software? If you are lucky he may be feeling bored and looking for something to do  :-)

I doubt if that would work. It seems that the same device gets different names, and PCI IDs, depending on where it is sold. So you can say that devices X, and Y, are "supported", but if it is sold as device Z, in your region, what do you do? The other big problem, is that motherboards come with devices, that the user has no choice about (in most cases). Recently, I got an Asus A88XM-A motherboard. The specs looked like it might work, but the wired NIC is a "Found Realtek NIC at bus 3:0:0: 10EC:8168 version 39 (RTL8168g/8111g)". Multimac loads, and it works at 100 Mbs (should be 1 Gbs) for a short period, then it just stops. As the information shows, it is version 39 of the SAME device, and it obviously requires something different.

I have a Gigabyte mainboard using a:-  Vendor 10ECh Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8168h RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller

I have not spotted a version number though... What did you use to get a version number?

I had a lot of fun trying to get this nic working until I discovered r8169-1.0.0.wpi in the eCS betazone. If you have not tried that build it may be worth a go.

Hi Joop

I think you may be misunderstanding something as it is the operating system installer being discussed not an application installer.

Hi Martin

I gather we are discussing the eCS installer.

What definitely could be improved are simple things: I always *deselect* the following:-

1] DOS/WinOS2 support. At the end of install there are DOS/WINOS2 lines in config.sys and the directory \os2\mdos exists and contains some, but not all DOS/WINOS2, files.

2] All forms of java - but java11 gets installed and has entries in config.sys

I also have to change the line PROTECTONLY=NO to PROTECTONLY=YES

I am sure there were a few other moans but, basically, the current installer should honour the users choice; that would be an improvement.

Hi Mentore

The reason that OS/2 code up to OS/2 1.3 works on NT/2000 is the OS/2 subsystem those operating systems contain. Remember that M$ were very involved in OS/2 up to and including 1.3 so I guess it was to their benefit that their early OS/2 apps could run on Windows NT/2000.
