Hi.

I'm very happy for this news.

SNAP is a video driver that I keep using till today on OS/2-eCS and this is a good news. I really hope to see this drive to came out.
But I'm hoping that later it can be improved in two things that sounds to be very basic for other OSes, but not for us.
1) The ability to switch resolution without rebooting.
2) The ability to connect a project/external monitor and that it will work without rebooting.

And I don't want to get greedy but I also want to dream away. I really hope that someday they also think to implement expanded desktops on OS/2 on modern video chipsets and that you can have several displays and select how it will be expanded or duplicated.

I think that one of the good things of Windows was to implement "OS Key + P" to switch the projection mode:

I wish Arca Noae good luck with this driver.

General Discussion / Windows 95 in your browser
« on: May 11, 2015, 10:40:55 pm »
Sorry for the disturbing subject :)

I noticed that some guy pull this off to set an image of Windows 95 to run on a browser.
http://win95.ajf.me/

So I was trying to find out if the same can apply for OS/2, but I noticed that this is based on "Em-DOSBox" which is a javascript implementation of DOSBox.  I always thought that Windows 95 was a not an OS that runs over DOS like used to be Win 3.1, but I'm not sure if I'm wrong now (I was never an expert on Windows 95 architecture).

What do you think? Can OS/2 be run on a browser just like Windows 95? or this only runs DOS and Windows 95 runs over it.

Regards.

Hi

Sometime ago I discussed a graphic representation (high level / Interpretation) of OS/2's architecture.
I putted it on EDM/2 : http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Category:Components

Now I want to identify which files of OS/2 belongs each component. I'm stating with Presentation Manager here: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager.  At the end I want to identify the files for each component, OS/2 Kernel (as a package), PM , SOM, WPS and Control Program.

I will appreciate your feedback, since I'm doing this research almost blind and sometime Google does not have information about each OS/2 file :)

Hi.

Even that I posted long time ago my dislike for RPM/YUM I'm using it now because it is more simple to find the dependencies of a package when you use it.

My dislike is for the FHS thar Linux uses - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesystem_Hierarchy_Standard. But since I can not fight that , I only ask for the next RPM/YUM to allow the user to install it on any folder and not in the root of the drive.

I had moved all the "linux styled FHS" directories/files to C:\Programs\FHS\ and all the pointers in the config.sys and it works without any problems. So I'm hoping that next versions allows the user to install RPM/YUM on the path that he desires.

General Discussion / Help transforming INF to PDF
« on: April 09, 2015, 06:42:04 pm »
Hi

I'm giving up for the moment to install CUPS to try to convert some INF to PDF. I will try it some months later when I have more time, right now I can't.

This is why I'm requesting some help to convert this INFs files from the IBM OS/2 toolkit to PDF. This is because I want to ask permission to be distribuited it and include some content on the EDM/2 Wiki, and INF is not a readable format for them (the layers) and I don't want to send it on HTML because it will be a mess.

I have the OS2TK45 docs files dated (2001/04/10). I guess those are the latest ones.

Please contact me by email if you can help me out transforming this files.

General Discussion / Haiku OS and its Niche.
« on: April 06, 2015, 06:02:05 pm »
Today I was reading Haiku OS efforts to find a niche are working.

They are now being included as a "Radio Automation Software" called "Command Center":
http://www.tunetrackersystems.com/about_haiku.html

We can debate if it is a good niche or not, but I found it very interesting to see how an OS (that was in a worst position than OS/2 and that never really got a huge market) is fighting to became adopted.

Today OS/2's niche are the companies that has a "Legacy OS/2 Application" and that to migrate away from OS/2 will cost more than buying eCS. But that niche is only temporary, we need to find new niches for this platform.  But it is hard to compete with other platforms like Windows, that has a huge marketplace, and with Linux and other open source OSes that has the added-value to do not depend on a single vendor.

If today someone invest on a "solution" that runs on eCS people will ask about... What about the OS? Who is developing it? I understand that IBM is not maintaining it...Who has the source code?  ... those all are logical/rational/realistic questions, and are a blocker when you want to create a solution for OS/2 to find a new niche. You don't want to put your business to run on a OS that if something breaks you don't have the source code to fix it and the one who has the source code no longer mains it.

I still insist that open sourcing OS/2 (cloning it) will allows us to do more. It will give us more users that want to experiment with the platform and eventually we will get business solutions to get into niche. If we wait to clone OS/2 after all the "legacy corporate" customers migrate to other platform it will be even harder to accomplish it. Today it is required not to only port more OSS to OS/2-eCS, but also to start thinking on the things that are inside the hood.

When people says it will be impossible to clone OS/2, I ask them to check ReactOS and Haiku OS, they are doing a very interesting progress on their own.

Off Topic discussions / April Fool's Jokes.

Hi

I'm not too much into this tradition, but it seems to be fun to read all the crazy scifi stuff from slashdot as news:
http://slashdot.org/

So, we also need some OS/2 jokes around:
1) Google+: OS/2 Rebound

2) Slashdot: Bill Gates Donates 1M to Open Source OS/2

It is nice to see some humor around.

Applications / PDF Printer
« on: March 17, 2015, 11:44:15 pm »
Hi

It used to be so easy to print on PDF with "PDF Printer", but I just installed it again and it is not working.
What are you using today to print as PDF?.

I have been trying ghostscript 8.71 and 9.16 with "PDF Printer" but it is not working. I'm getting this error when try to print a INF with NewView (picture attached).

Any hints?

Programming / Presentation Manager - About PM DLL's
« on: March 04, 2015, 10:50:50 pm »
Hi

I'm trying to document a little bit more about Presentation Manager on EDM/2. This is also focused for me to understand more how are the Presentation Manager DLL's structured with the hope to have more documentation.   First I'm trying to list which are the files that are part of PM, so I'm comparing what OSFree says is the PM API.

But I still have some question about some PM DLL's.

For example, if you take the "WinInitialize" function, you can see that is included in two DLLs, PMMerge.DLL and PMWIN.DLL.

I had been told that this is because some DLL are forwarders to other DLL, in this case it may mean (I guess on my limited understanding) that the source code of the function is included on PMMERGE.DLL and PMWIN.DLL just forward the application asking for "WinInitialize".

Maybe this is a very basic question but, which is the value of DLL forwarders on this case? does PMWIN.DLL has some intelligence (source code) when refereeing to "WinInitialize"? or does all the work is done on PMMERGE.DLL?

I really do not know if some DLL Forwarders does not have any logic inside and just send all the work to PMMERGE? or if I'm completely misunderstanding how the DLLs works on PM and on OS/2.

Article Discussions / UEFI and GPT (GUID Partition Table)
« on: February 27, 2015, 06:32:16 pm »
Hi

I try to find some discussion about UEFI and GPT on OS/2-eComStation, but I haven't find much.  It mostly says about UEFI, turn on the "legacy mode".

But I wanted to see if there had been any discussion of what can be possible solutions to implement/develop on OS/2-eCS. I haven't been interested on UEFI and GPT discussions on the past but now I want to learn more about it.

Any pointers?

About News:
http://www.os2world.com/past-news/79-general/20797-arca-noae-arca-noae-and-serenity-systems-international

Hi

I don't know exactly what does it mean but maybe it can be good news.

Serenity Systems International is the company that made the OEM agreement with IBM to resell OS/2 as OEM. But Mensys used to get all "Serenity Systems International" assets (or maybe not) some time ago, but since it was not a public agreement (SSI and Mensys) I can not say if it was sold, or just have permission to redistribute/built eCS, or anything at all.

So I will start with a basic: What does this means?
- Does it means Arca Noae can distribute/sell/build eComStation now?
- Did Serenity Systems company was sold his company twice ? - I wish I can do that :)   ...or it was not sold at the first place.
- So now Arca Noae has an agreement signed with Mensys/XEU? SSI has an agreement with Mensys, and SSI was bought by Arca Noae.
- Or is it eComStation out of the equation, since maybe only eCS was sold from SSI to Mensys?
- Or this does not apply to IBM's OEM agreement? or it applies?
- Or maybe Arca Noae just bought SVISTA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SVISTA) and can return from the dead? :P

I'm really confused with this things, and I have too many questions. But I hope this turns to be a good thing.
