Arca Noae is spending a LOT of effort to make OS/2 talk in different languages (I don't know the details). Currently available versions only speak English, although some programs do more than one language. More details should become available, as language support is readied for distribution.

Probably you know it anyway but what comes to mind are -
- disable Energy saving in XP WLAN driver setting
- shut down XP while WLAN is acitve

Neither helped. I think I was messing with this, a couple of years ago, so I did a clean install of ArcaOS 5.0.8. After adding a profile, it works.

That is, it works with WPA-PSK, and NOT with WPA2-PSK. That has always been the case, with this machine (WPA2-PSK does work in winXP). If I was actually going to use this, I would do more tweaking in the settings.

I've a T43 somewhere in the store which I'm pretty sure with working wlan.

My T43 (1871 model, but that shouldn't matter) did work, with no troubles, but that was a wile back. Obviously something went wrong, somewhere. I need to find some time to play with it. It does work in winXP, so the hardware is okay.

Sorry, but I seem to have missed something. This isn't working, and I have run out of time, for now. See if you can make it work, and I will be back later.

Andi B knows a lot more about configuring this, than I do.

Now, a travel router attached to an Ethernet port does so much more,

I fully agree with this, which is one of the reasons why I haven't got this to work previously.

FTR, I haven't been able to configure my IBM ThinkPad T43 to work with GENMU. I have, obviously, missed something. I can get the computer to do all that is expected, except to actually connect to the router. Effectively, the "cable" is missing, otherwise it looks good. The "cable" is supplied by the WPAsupplicant. I will report back, if I can figure it out.

I have no prior experience with WIFI under OS/2, so do not expect any prior knowledge.

It has been a long time, since I did this, so some guessing here.

I got the GenMac driver loaded on boot. It says: Loaded for Device: Intel 5100 a/b/g [8086/4237] ("WRND32"). So I suspected all is good.

That sounds promising. It means that the driver loaded. Only part way there. You also need the WPAsuplicant https://hobbesarchive.com/Home/Download?path=/Hobbes/pub/os2/util/network/misc/WPASupplicant_2-10_2021-07-25.zip.

Any help?

As I said, it has been a long time, but now you need to configure the widget (I am doing this, on my one remaining GENMU machine, guessing as I go):
RMB on the widget-> Properties-> Inspect the options. Usually, it will work with the defaults, but you may want to change them, after you get it working.Close that.
RMB on the widget-> Add/Edit Profile-> click New-> Give it a name, that you will recognize (I use the SSID)-> Add the network name (the SSID)-> Security tab-> under Encryption, select WPA-PSK, or WPA2-PSK (your router needs to support what you select). Add the Preshared key (password). Inspect the rest of the settings, but they should work. Close.
RMB on the widget-> Select profile (the one you just created).

Sorry, but I seem to have missed something. This isn't working, and I have run out of time, for now. See if you can make it work, and I will be back later.

Events / Re: Warpstock 2024: Coming? Not Coming? Why?

So, if you are coming to Warpstock this year, please mention why. If not, please go into some detail as to your reasons for not making the trip (travel cost, hassle of getting there, registration cost, bad timing, lack of enthusiasm for the location, etc.). We want to know.

I can't fly, due to ear problems (and other things). I would consider driving, but I neglected to get a passport. I should have gone to Calgary, a few years ago, but something came up, and I didn't get there. Oh well...

I see the biggest problem as nobody is actually writing new software for OS/2. All efforts seem to be put into porting software written for other platforms. Since most of them have 64 bit support, there is little (or no) thought put into writing efficient code (and that shows, on other platforms, but modern computer are fast enough to make up for it). Then there are the restrictions, put in place to stop the bad guys, that are mostly useless, but still stop our platform because we cannot possibly keep up to what they are doing.

Getting post secondary software classes involved would seem to be one answer, but I don't have any contacts.

Looking forward to the results of the meeting.

Hardware / Re: Disable Touchpad in config.sys. AMOUSE ?

Code: [Select]
DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBMOUSE.SYS /DEVICE:1does it on my Lenovo L530.

I would suggest, that it  is better to do it in the BIOS, if the setting exists.

The modern ZIP.EXE does not work in a command line boot. Use
Code: [Select]
C:\sys\install\ZIP2.EXEwhich is the OLD standalone ZIP.  note that the OLD ZIP cannot do files larger than 2GB (in, or out).

Applications / Re: AOS RAM Disk

I am not going to try to duplicate your configuration. there is really no point in doing that. I will comment on your configuration (which is similar to what I used a number of years ago);

RAMFS is not a good choice: It takes up lower shared memory space, which is in critical short supply. The ArcaOS RAMDISK (or use the QS Loader - available from HOBESARCHIVE, which is the same RAMDISK). It can use memory above what OS/2 can use, meaning that only a small driver uses system memory. A simple script, in STARTUP.CMD, can format it to JFS (start with selecting FAT32 as the format), which has full support for EAs and things like the SWAPPER (which doesn't seem to be used anyway, when you have more than 2 GB of memory).

HPFS is no longer a good choice. It also uses critical lower memory space. You likely use JFS anyway, which, on it's own, performs better than HPFS (especially when a CHKDSK is required at boot time).

If you can, use VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT=3072. If that doesn't work, try 2560, which should work on all ArcaOS systems (and probably ECS and earlier versions of OS/2).

How, exactly, are you measuing speed? Read? Read/write? Write? What are the cache parameters? Which file system?

There are too many variables to even start to estimate speed, never mind try to compare it.

Using the DFSEE read/write speed test, on my old Lenovo T510, with AHCI type SSD, I get about 41 MiB/s Same machine with ArcaOS Ramdisk, tells me about 397 MiB/s. No doubt about which is faster.

I don't have exact numbers for my new Asus X570, but the RAMDISK, and NVME SSD are pretty close to the same speed. The advantage to using the Ramdisk, is that it doesn't cycle out the memory cells, in the NVME SSD, as much.  Since memory, above 4 GB, isn't used much anyway, it doesn't really matter if those cells get cycled. An interesting thing, is that a 3.1 GB system dump, to the Ramdisk takes about 2 seconds. Then after I boot, that dump gets copied to more permanent storage, and that takes about 5 minutes (it is a FAT32 dump partition). FAT32 is VERY slow, even on a NVME type SSD.

Hardware / Re: Modern Motherboards - Whats working
« on: June 02, 2024, 03:26:48 am »
I have been skipping through this, but thought I would add a few comments. Unfortunately, I am not at home, so most of this is from my failing memory.

I, recently, got an Asus x570 Tuff Gaming motherboard, with 6 core (12 threads, for windows) AMD 5600G (?) processor. Put 16 GB of memory in it, with a 1 TB Crucial NVME stick for disk. After I looked through the UEFI BIOS, and turned off a number of things, it is working well. Over 3GB memory available to OS/2. Sound works (UNIAUD needs /A:1). The 2.5 Gbps Realtek NIC works (with Multimac MMRE, but I can't say if it runs that fast since I don't have another machine with 2.5 Gbps). Video is HDMI only (works well, with a 1920x1080 screen, and Panorama).

Overall, I am very pleased with it.

I have no idea what the NOLARGENTEXEICON setting does and there is  definitely no code  in Samba that would handle it

From REXX T&T:
Code: [Select]
SET NOLARGENTEXEICON=n
Limit the number of megabytes (=n) the WPS should scan through Windows EXE files for the program icon before assigning a default icon

Available: New kernels from testcase (APAR PJ27886)

Reading generally it seems there are statements you can add related to adding specific protocols to SMB.conf, like Netbios - there were also statements about various network protocols listening on different ports - was looking to see if anyone can tell me any success stories about connecting to some of these legacy systems under ArcaMapper.

Yes, there are many (mostly useless) things. You probably want to get back to the DEFAULTS, because they work most often. The defaults may need to be restored in the other devices (NAS, win 7) too.

It would help if you told us exactly what you are doing, and what the results are.

Agree the Samba Server in ArcaOS is 3.x (OLD) - however I've been posted builds of a Samba 4.x server here for some time. Current build is based on Samba 4.19.4.

IMO, Mark is not ready to try Alpha, or Beta, software. (I am not ready either, because I don't know enough about SAMBA). What we need to know, is exactly what is he doing?

I can assume that he is trying to use SAMBA CLIENT, to access his other devices (so the server would be entirely irrelevant). Obviously there is a problem there, and it is probably a setup error. Many users have missed the fact that the SAMBA CLIENT has almost caught up to the rest of the world, and they have forgotten what they did, to other servers, to get older versions of the client to work properly. Some, or all, of those things need to be undone. Win 7 is sort of a middle ground, where most, but possibly not all, parts will work with our client, and server.

Good Morning Guys!

That is, good if you like waking up to -41 C with an overnight low of -46 C. We had 3 months of balmy winter here in Alberta and are now paying for it - I see some of our colleagues in the states are having winter storms, so I guess we're all in it together.

Well, it is afternoon now. That was a serious cold snap. It is still cold, but I am looking for the beach.   :)

Quote
I will say as background, I've never been able to successfully connect to these resources using ArcaMapper, or its previous incarnations under ArcaOS in the past - so I decided a cold winter day was the time to try to solve this problem once and for all.

I don't know anything about your NAS, but it should work. I have not had problems with win 7, since I told it to use the proper protocols. I have removed all but three win 7 VBox systems. I need to ask what version of win 7, since networking is a little different in different versions.

Quote
Are there any other specific statements that I should add or modify, or am I looking in the wrong direction?

If you have ever modified any of those statements, UNmodoify them, but it is more likely to be something that you are doing wrong. Trying to figure that out is probably next to impossible. There are alot of ways to mess it up.

First, realize that SAMBA server, in OS/2, is version 3.x (OLD), but it is capable of handling win 7 (I assume the NAS is a Linux box). SAMBA client is version 4.x, and it needs to be told to use older protocols (when necessary), hence the -NT parameter. -NT should not be necessary with win 7 (but leave it as default). I am not sure about your NAS. Win 7 may need to be set to stop using the older protocols, if it was previously set to use them.

But first, exactly what do you do to create the problem, and exactly what happens?
