Roderick,

How can I qualify to be in the first group that receives the beta?. For the last month I have been using the QT5 simple browser for most of my day to day transactions, including my 2 bank and 3 email accounts. Also I have been able to purchase in different stores paying with my credit card.

I run native ArcaOS 5.0.6 and at the most I start my Windows 7 once per week.

And of course I have done modest contributions to the project compatible with my age and income.

It was hard work for me finding the correct combination of libraries that would simple brower work. Finally I started with a clean ArcaOS 5.06 installation and followed the instructions of the README. It worked, and very nicely, smoother than Firefox 4.8 and allowing me to get into a lot of sites that didn't accept Firefox anymore. To avoid future problems, I freezed the update by copying the \usr\lib folder to a new name, and even porting this new folder to another PC. In case I have problems with the standard \usr\lib, I use SET BEGINLIBPATH with the freezed folder so I have no impact from any updates of the libraries.

The only significant flaw I found in the simplebrowser is that in some input fields of some sites you cannot type any information. An example for this is gmail.com which will ask you to provide your gmail user. There is no way to input any information in that field. Perhaps this problem has an easy solution which will much enhance the usability of the simple browser until we have the production version.

Y  would vote for:

ePDF
xFree86

I had them working in my Warp 4 but never could implement them fully in ECS or ArcaOS.

I couldn't make simplebrowser work until I upgraded my RAM from to 2GB to 4 GB. Am I doing something wrong, or 2GB PCs will not be able to run the new browser? Did anyone make it work in 2GB? Please share with us the procedure.

Matthias, on May 3, 2020, I confirmed you that the solution worked. It was Issue 128298

In my mail I said:

"I installed hunspell and now it  works  fine.

However, hunspell was not included in the list of required libraries
in file read1st.txt which is part of the distribution."

This was corrected in the 4.1.8 distribution.

Thanks

NightVision OS/2 has already all the functions of SkyChart and more. But if you require access to a larger star data base, there is a Java version 5.2 which runs very well in OS/2.

Paul,

You have left unanswered Neil's comment about dictionaries. In the URL you mention, all the languages use files with the same names. You cannot copy them together to the hunspell folder. And then, how are them installed? The readme says using npm, but npm is not available in OS2.

How would I add a dictionary?

And what are the dictionaries for? I have read documents in English, French and Spanish quite well, with no dictionaries installed.

Eduardo

Until the downloading is fixed - copy the appropriate language file from https://github.com/wooorm/dictionaries/tree/main/dictionaries into ./share/hunspell

For others, the qt5core fix is linked from https://github.com/bitwiseworks/qtbase-os2/issues/121

Cheers,

Paul

I copied all the files into ./share/hunspell, but it still doesn't know English. I wonder if there should be a sub-directory structure to support different languages?

To avoid problems I just de-installed the Times New Roman provided by OS2 and installed those from Windows, files
times.ttf, timesbd.ttf, timesbi.ttf and timesi.ttf. They can be found in the System32 folder of any modern Windows version.

These fonts include Basic and Extended Greek, which is very useful if you have to quote ancient Greek phrases. Alsolots of other special symbols. To see what is the content of a font, I use the funtion Insert-Special Character of Open Office.

Applications / OpenOffice 4.1.7 ignores Language dictionaries
« on: February 12, 2020, 12:29:55 am »
I installed OpenOffice 4.1.7 and it is working fine. I then installed the English and Spanish dictionaries I have been using in 4.1.3, but then I noticed that when I select some part of the document and try to specify a language by means of Format Character, the installed dictionaries do not appear ticked in the Language window as in 4.1.3. A a consequence it is not possible to run an orthographic validation.

Am I doing something wrong or is it a problem of the 4.1.7 release?

Pete,

As you seem not to have  a test system, you could use our group for testing. Can you provide us with a sample of those Bills you cannot open with Lucide? Then you will know if the problem is with your system, with Lucide or with the PDF. I use both Lucide and qpdfview with no problem with any of the PDFs issued by my service providers

Hola, Martín,

I see in the Agenda a topic: ArcaOS preloaded computers.

I would like to know it there will be any ArcaOS preloaded laptop.

Hardware / Re: Time for a OS/2 box
« on: April 05, 2018, 01:14:26 am »
I think an alternative could be that Arca Noae approaches some existing laptop manufacturer and work together the more needed drivers for one of their current models. Some way should be found for the coexistance of Windows and ArcaOS. Most OS/2 fans will buy that model. Perhaps some enterprises also. The total market I think will be a few thousands.

Andreas:

I checked again in my ArcaOS 5.02, with Firefox 38.0 and 45.9. I don't get the error message neither in the first opening nor later. No idea why.

When I open  www.os2world.com in my ArcaOS 5.0 (with many RPM updates), I get the error

When I do the same in my ArcaOS 5.0.2 (with no updates), there is no error.

I hope this helps.
