Utilities / Re: Extract *.img file
« on: September 08, 2023, 01:04:00 pm »
Img files are very hard to work with, because of multiple format.

1.  Winimage site has an extract, as freeware, go for v 2.1, it has separate DOS Win32 vers.
2.  Check the magic at the beginning the disk.
3.  OS2HDD will extract DSKF format to a directory target\lable\contents.

I used filebar since it appeared on the Stardock Essential diskette.  In runs under 3,0 prolly earlier, but you can use it in worlplace= as a replacement for pmshell.  Its not resource hungry.

ecS 2.2 only went to beta.  But it's still very good.  Buy 2.1 and use its key in the 2.2 beta.

Artie was from OS/2 4.0, and reminded you to register your copy of OS/2.  You can deactivate it by deleting art.exe.

elephant.zip contains a dancing elephant in front of a breaking window.  It's in relation to the quote that 'elephants can't dance'.  I have also an OS/2 2.x era wallpaper of the OS/2 elephant.  I think it was intended to refer to OS/2 being elephentine, but the period DOS/Win31 still came on 9 to 10 diskettes.

The last "tame" that runs under OS/2 is one you can't register.  You can register later ones that runs under WinNT and Vista.

I suspect /MDOS instead of /VDD.  It's the directory where the stuff ends up in OS/2.

I normally poke DOS stuff for OS/2 in a directory \MDOS under the OS2 files.  This is a sample of what's there.  These particularly work the DOS/OS2 interface.

2gbfix, denynone, dos5iso, doscall, dstart, dualdosc, endvdm, keydos, mscdex22, os2exec, pipdos11, run110, vcdr090

I've seen the file in a pack of four joke filters.

Val-speak refers to the californian valley behind san-francisco and the style of speach used by young folk.

Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS USB installation - Rufus?
« on: November 16, 2021, 10:50:17 am »
As to Windows 10, my brother's opinion of it was to request me to order in an OEM base install of windows 7.

We followed some advice and disabled a whole lot of things, and Win10's idea was to download fixes and install + uninstall them.  You boot the computer and go have dinner before it had finished booting.

Rufus apparently makes some rather obscure checks on the system.

In the end, i used some other proggie easyusb (from the people who make BCDedit.)

The environment variable from 2.x days is WIN3DIR=path to windir.

If you are using a 'for windows' red version, it could be d:\windoze  Under blue OS/2  it's d:\os2\mdos\winos2

Utilities / OS/2 Keyboard Layout
« on: November 12, 2021, 09:42:11 am »
I wonder if there is any kind of OS/2 keyboard layout editor.  I want to put a few extra letters on my keyboard, like þ, ñ, ß, etc.

I saw something that was on hobbes i think, that might do it, but i'm still waiting in eCom to come up with the necessary key.,

On the other hand, "Network" would include "Internet", given that TCP/IP and Intranet are Internet things that are local.  Even my telephone makes no distinction between network and internet, even though it's no longer allowed to download stuff over the POTS but only through WiFi.

When you pay different prices for the same data in different ways, the distinction is useful to make.

CD Toys has a program "Save Disk Image", which is a gui interface to imageing disks.  See attached piccie.
