I decided to do a test to see how well the new icons are looking.
I copied my new icons to drive:\sys\icons
The new folder name is DGYellowIcons
I changed the bigicons path in the config.sys file to
SET BIGICONS=D:\SYS\ICONS\DGYELLOWICONS
I opened the System Setup folder
Selected the WPShell icon
Selected the last tab for Icon Size
I then selected Use custom icons and and Dynamic setting it to 56, closed and rebooted.
Nothing changed. The text was still named bigicons.txt. I then changed it to dgyellowicons.txt, rebooted and still no change. I was wonder if this feature was ever tested. I also rename my dgyellowicons folder to bigicons to see if that helped which it did not.
Rich, any ideas? There are now over 400 :png icons and with lots more to do.
Note: There were some items in the txt file I had no clue what they were. I used the ; to comment them out for now.
I have attached the txt to see if it is the problem.
-
OK, I tried it on a different partition and this time some of the icons were replaced, but not many. There must be major problems with that other partition that will require me to reinstall when I have time. It appears that a lot of program icons were replaced, but none of the folder icons.
Further examination reveals the pro.gram icons are changing except for the ones that are missing or named incorrectly. Not one folder icon changed. There appears to be a problem with folders changing.
-
I then selected Use custom icons and and Dynamic setting it to 56, closed and rebooted.
Nothing changed. The text was still named bigicons.txt.
The filename must not be changed.
I was wonder if this feature was ever tested.
Yes, both at the time of its inclusion in AOS 5.0, and within the last week in response to your postings. WFM.
I replaced my copy of 'bigicons.txt' with yours, then restarted the WPS. Entries that you hadn't changed, such as folders, font palette, and color palette, all came up with the appropriate PNG icon.
It occurs to me that you had previously been replacing icons manually on an object-by-object basis. Doing so would override any changes you've made to the defaults. Have you tried pressing the "Reset icon" button that's displayed when 'png' is selected? Also, the "Browse" button should bring up a file selection dialog that points at the currently active 'bigicons' directory. Does it point at the correct directory?
If problems persist, perhaps you could post a representative sample of your icons (10-20) for objects I'm likely to have, such as stuff in System Setup. This would let me do more comprehensive testing.

Hi Rich
I have attached some of the icons including an update bigicons.txt which corrects a lot of the mistakes I made. I have attached new startup folder icons, network icons. command prompt icons, drive icons, and others. I also include some folders. I have yet to get folder icons to update.
Also, a peek the new icons. This is a work in progress..
-
As you stated Rich, I needed to open the folder properties and reset each icon. I guess this is due to the fact that I had individually install all the previous PNG folder icons.

Hello Rich
ArcaOS 5.1.0 installed here shows me by default "SET BIGICONS=C:\sys\icons\BIGICONS" on the config.sys.
Does it means that "SET BIGICONS=" is always wrong, or that it is also possible to use "SET BIGICONSPATH=" ?
Is there a difference between both that you know about?

The difference between the two is that "SET BIGICONSPATH=" is correct (i.e. that's what the code looks for) while "SET BIGICONS=" is incorrect (i.e. the code doesn't look for this). The fact that AN has been putting the wrong entry in config.sys for the last 6 years doesn't change things. My only question is why it took someone 6 years to notice the error.
FWIW... I was the one who transformed "Sunny Icons" into "Dynamic Icons", so maybe I was the one who gave them the wrong info. If so, I apologize for the error.
-
Rich, is there a way in the bigicons.txt file to use one icon file for all icons to use that are not assigned an icon.
For unassigned txt files, is there a setting for the system to look at?
The same for URL text files.
For unassigned folders.
I noticed these keep the Original OS/2 icon.
-
Hi Rich
Both config.sys lines work equally well - or badly in my case.
I did not install Dynamic Icons when installing 5.1.0 but since purchasing a slightly bigger screen (Dell P2222H) with more acreage have installed from the wpi packages in the ISO file.
After a reboot I set icon size to Dynamic, 56 for both Icon and Tree views. Shortly after I bumped into a problem: Opening the Drives folder results in a system hang, Drives folder status bar shows "Collecting objects...", mouse moves but cannot click on anything, C-A-D works to get me to the option of WPS Reset which only delivers a black screen, Trying C-A-D again then Reboot(Restart) option results in a blue-ish (turquoise) screen of death, only the system box Off button works.
After a reboot retried opening the Drives folder with the same result.
Rebooted, reset icon size to Normal for Icon View and can now open Drives folder.
Prior to the Drives folder problem I noticed that some folders opened in icon view did not use the icon size 56 but were displayed at Normal size.
Any ideas on resolving the above problems? - which may be related...

Hello
I wanted to try to see if I can use "DGicons.ZIP" to change the icons.
Here I'm using ArcaOS 5.1.0. Icons are set on "Dynamic - 64x64"
- Downloaded DGicons.ZIP , unzip it and put it on C:\sys\icons\DGIcons
- Changed Config.sys to "SET BIGICONSPATH=C:\sys\icons\DGIcons"
On the next reboot I did not see any change to the icons.
- I tried going back to "Icons - Normal" and back "Dynamic - 64x64" but I still see the icons included in ArcaOS.
- David's bigicons.txt is located on "C:\sys\icons\DGIcons"
Are the icons supposedly to be automatically changed on the next reboot, or I missed up something on the thread?

On the last tab in the "Workplace Shell" object ('Icon size'), there's a checkbox labelled "Use custom icons". That must be on.
Precisely because this option is so well hidden, I've started work on a companion page for "Text Size" called (yes!) "Icon Size" :) It has a simplified UI for enabling Dynamic Icons (including custom icons) as well as an option to have XCenter use either Full-sized or Mini icons. I believe Roderick Klein will be displaying some screenshots of it in his Warpstock presentation.
BTW... this new page will not replace the existing D.I. pages - it will just be easier to find...

Yes, that was what I was missing. It did the trick.
I understand that "DGicons.ZIP" is not complete yet, that's why I have some non-matching icons, but the concept worked here.

I just finished some DFSee icons. Once I add these to the script and check for errors, I may upload. Tons of corrections in the bigicons.txt.
This may be about 90% finished. Need to arrange the bigicons.txt file better. There are still some issues. The arca command prompt shows for for some icons that don't a png icon. The KLIBC icons will not update in the systems setup folder. The bitmaps folder and one other have no asssigned id, so can't update. Common unassigned folder and text continue to show the old ugly OS/2 icons.
Other than that, it is working well. Up to aroound 470 PNGs
Wait one more day and the new pngs and new txt will be uploaded. I think Rich or someone smarter than me may have to correct what I can't.

Sorry for the delay in responding but I needed to do some testing.
First, though, a comment: when AN licensed Dynamic Icons (a.k.a. Sunny Icons), it was in a pretty sorry state (IMHO). With the initial release of AOS 5.0 just weeks away. I started trying to fix things. Fortunately (for me), the release was delayed so I was able to get it from "lousy" to "minimally acceptable" - the state you see it in today. Since then, nothing meaningful has been done to it. Since then there have been incremental changes but nothing to fix some basic design errors. I no longer work for AN so I'm not in a position to give it the TLC it clearly needs. I can tell you how it _should_ work but sadly, there's nothing I can do to fix it.
Anyway... if a file can't be given an icon based on its type, its extension, its Object ID, or its associated app, it should get an icon based on its WPS class (e.g. WPDataFile). Sometimes it does, sometimes, it doesn't (sometimes both). The only one that works consistently is WPFolder because I worked on that.
As a test, I opened a folder containing one of my programming projects. Files whose extensions are listed in bigicons.txt had the right icon. The rest had the stock WPS datafile icon. When I opened one of these files' Properties, the object suddenly got the right icon.
Next, I opened a different folder in Xview first, then opened it in Icon View. Almost all of the miscellaneous files had the correct icon. This suggests these failures are due to timing issues: if it can't come up with the right icon quickly enough the first time the folder opens, it uses what's available (i.e. the stock icon). The next time, with all of the objects already in place, it has the time to find the right icon (mostly).
For my final test I had a "bright idea". At the very end of the list of files and extensions I put "*" and associated it with the MIDI icon. After a restart, most of the miscellaneous files had the MIDI icon - but so did every Program Object that didn't have a custom icon. Pretty lame...
I've gone into all this detail (sorry for the length) to confirm what you already know: some parts of Dynamic Icons just don't work correctly and won't no matter what you do. For the foreseeable future, only icons that target specific files, extensions, IDs, etc. will work reliably. You can establish default icons for various WPS classes but don't expect a lot and you won't be disappointed :)
-
David, under the [CLASS] heading, the line for WPFolder needs to be updated to point at your icons. Currently, it shows:
"WPFolder" "folder.png", "folder-open.png"
It should be:
"WPFolder" "folder_closed.png", "folder_open.png"
Also the top lines are mangled. Currently, it shows:
"templaPOPUPte" "view-pim-notes.png"
It should be:
[SYSTEM]
"template" "view-pim-notes.png"
Final note: if you don't have a PNG for something, remove its entry. It's just clutter that slows down the lookup process.

Rebooted, reset icon size to Normal for Icon View and can now open Drives folder.
Sorry, Pete, this one got lost in the shuffle... My best _guess_ is that something other than one of the Drive objects is causing the problem. "Refresh Removable Media" is a likely suspect. Move it and any other non-drive objects to another folder, close the window, then restart the Desktop and retry.
Before doing any of that, you may want to open the Drives folder's Properties to the 'Include' tab and delete any filters so you can see everything in there (also, do a Sort or Arrange to ensure everything is in view).
Prior to the Drives folder problem I noticed that some folders opened in icon view did not use the icon size 56 but were displayed at Normal size.
I've found a few like that - I don't remember setting these folders to "Normal" but apparently they thought I did. Once you manually set them back to the current default, they'll change when the default changes.
-
Hi Rich
Yes, moving "Refresh Removable Media" to a different folder resolved the Drives problem - but moved the problem to the other folder. So, not really a fix...
I have found several other folders that display icons at Normal size and cause a system hang when setting them to use Dynamic Icons.
After lots of reboots I can suggest a possible cause: Opening the Properties of an object involved in system hangs eg "Refresh Removable Media" and selecting the Icon tab results in an incomplete display of that page, Current icon image and text missing and yet another system hang - this occurs with icon size set as Normal as well as 56x56 and other sizes.
Seems that something went wrong during install of pngdesk and/or pngicons.
Uninstalled Dynamic Icons, deleted the os2.ini file entry and rebooted, then checked that accessing "Refresh Removable Media" -> Properties -> Icon did not cause any problems, image and text displayed.
Installed Dynamic Icons (again) with the same results as previously.
If Dynamic Icons works without the above problems for other people I can only guess it is something on my system causing the problems. Not sure what to check though...

In this case, the problem is not operator error or a bad install - it's just broken. I can reliably lock up my system by using D&D to copy a program object to a folder that's open in Icon view. You might think that I would have noticed this before but I use Xview almost exclusively and only have 2 folders that use Icon view (one of them being the Desktop).
Since I still have the source code, I added some debugging messages to follow the path it takes coming up with an icon. For program objects, I can only describe it as "extraordinary". I also found out why datafiles don't get the default icon based on their WPS class: it gets that icon then throws it away and tries to find an icon based on name or association.
Another thing I learned: I had actually made multiple updates to Dynamic Icons over the years but totally forgot about them (e.g. getting the Trashcan to show the proper empty/full icon). Senior moment?

I am just about ready to upload the latest. I decided to do what you suggested in earlier post.
I made a new directory call BigIconsYellow, moved all the new files to it and then moved the directory to drive:\sys\icons.
I then change the lline in the config.sys to point to the new directory.
SET BIGICONSPATH=E:\sys\icons\BIGICONSYELLOW
and rebooted. Only a few of the icons changed to the new PNGs. I rebooted several times with the same result. I then changed it back to the
SET BIGICONS=E:\sys\icons\BIGICONSYELLOW
and all the new icons changed over except for the few I listed in earlier post I had trouble with. It appears the original path statement in the config.sys is needed for it to work when using a different directory other than BIGICONS Now the weird part. I previously has been using original bigicons folder name for all my previous testing.
Conclusion:
Replaced the original icons in the bigicons folder and you can use the SET BIGICONSPATH=
Replace the BIGICONS folder with BIGICONSYELLOOW and you must use the original path statement SET BIGICONS=
Progress report:
The new release contains many more new icons and folders. Reworked some of the earlier folders, More corrections in the bigicons.txt file. Rearranged the text file. At least now I can more easily find what I am looking for. Most system icons and folders are now replaced. You will be surprised by how many programs are now supported.
-
There is more to this. i made a big goof. I thought the BigIconsYellow had all the icons the bigicons directory had, but it did not. It was missing quite a few of the icons which would account for my results. I realized this when I deleted the files in my bigicons directory and move all the files from bigiconsyellow directory over to it. Needless to say, i am now at work trying to recover from this mess.. It looks like I will have to make some of the ionns I lost. Right at the end, i quite backing up the icons i made thinking i would soon be uploading. Now I will be delayed by a day or two while i try to recover from the mess i created for myself. Rearranging the bigicons.txt has helped speed up my recovery. It is way more easier to find everything.
-
I tried to upload the new zip and it is too large to be accepted. I don't think it is wise to split the zip into two parts.
-
How about using 7z? How big is the zip? Looks like about 7.2 MB limit here
-
Dave, I will look at it later. This has been an adventure. To me stupidly deleting over 100 of my icons to encountering a limit that had me all day looking for answers. I found out that the bigicons.txt has a size limit before it destabilizes the entire wpshell. More on that later.
-
I found out that the bigicons.txt has a size limit before it destabilizes the entire wpshell.
I'd certainly be interested in looking at a copy of 'bigicons.txt' that was too big. I checked for obvious stuff (file buffer too small, memory allocated but not freed, etc) but nothing jumped out at me.
-
Attached is a pic of what happens to the desktop. I also attached the new bigicons.txt for you to see. I change the txt to log so it would be accepted.
The upload folder is full and will not allow me to upload the second half of the icons. If I remember correctly, there is a total of areound 574 icons.
Rich, take the last llne in the txt file and move it down by hitting the enter key, lets say 9 times, save, and see what happens.
Martin, do you have to do anything so I can finish the upload?
-
I showed the ugly side of what can happen. Here is what the good side looks like..

Hello
FYI: I reported the but to Arca Noae showing that "SET BIGICONS=<path>" is wrong (default on config.sys) and described the procedure steps on why I think it is wrong.

I started work on the black icon folders. Here it will be a matter of renaming and creating some new folders. Still making a change or two to the yellow set. It is nice to change icons without having to do all individually.
Rich, did you encounter any problems with the bigicons text file if it reaches a certain size. I had to reduce a lost of the blank lines between groupings to keep destabilization of WPShell from happening? Will I be able to upload to Hobbes when ready? I cannot do it here because Martin has set size limitations for uploads?
-
I have almost completed the bigicons black..
It is so simple to change between the folder sets.
In your config.sys, add SET statements for each set.
EX.
rem SET BIGICONSPATH=E:\sys\icons\BIGICONS_YELLOW
rem SET BIGICONSPATH=E:\sys\icons\BIGICONS_RED
SET BIGICONSPATH=E:\sys\icons\BIGICONS_BLACK
You just REM out the statements for the sets that are not being used. To switch, REM out the one you were using and un REM the one you want to switch to, save, and reboot. The new set comes up after your reboot. Continuing to test. Everything is great so far.
-
Hi David.
Check it out if you can upload files here. I had updated the upload size on the forum.
Regards
-
Thanks Martin for every thing you do for this platform!
This is the yellow theme.
Move or copy folder to your
<drive>:\sys\icons\ directory
Edit you config.sys file
REM out the original Set statement
REM SET BIGICONS= <DRIVE>:\SYS\ICONS\BIGICONS
Now add the following line:
SET BIGICONSPATH= <DRIVE>:\SYS\ICONS\BIGICONS_YELLOW
Save and reboot.
Now go to you Desktop > System Settings > Worplace Shell, select and look for the Icon Size tab at the upper far right.
Check the Dynamic Icons box and over on the left the size you want and restart Desktop
If some folders don't change, you may have to reset the icons for the folder. The same goes for program icons. Once done, you will not have to do this again.
Not too often the desktop will come up with no icons. Just restart the desktop and everything is fine. Might be some kind of timing issue.
If for whatever reason the desktop acts crazy, un-select the bigicons checkbox in the
System Setup > Workplace Shell > Icon Size tab on the far at the top, and then restart desktop,
Or you can just REM out the path statement in the cofig.sys.
When I had major problems with the bigicon.txt, I could always reach the Icon Size tab to deselect and restart Desktop.
Still doing fine tuning on the Black set
It is nice to change themes with just a couple of changes in the config.sys
The programs it supports are
40S2
AVXCAT
FM2
PMAIL
DFSEE
DOOBLE
DOXBOX
DVD TOOLS AND TOYS
FIREFOX
GOTCHA
HARWARE EXPLORER
ISOFS

David, I installed your 'BIGICONS_YELLOW' package and got a pleasant surprise when I opened some WPS folders and notebooks: XWP's window-list widget shows your icons rather than the originals. As expected, windows created by other apps retain their original icon.
Looking at 'bigicons.txt', I spotted these errors:
- the very first line is still missing. It should be "[SYSTEM]"
- lines 549 and 569 are supposed to be comments but they're missing the leading semicolon
If you're having problems with the size of the file (and you really shouldn't), there are two things you can do. As mentioned previously, if you don't supply an icon for something, get rid of its entry (e.g."WPSafeCapsule"). The other is to remove most of the comments. The cacheing system is very crude and does not remove them, so each time the app has to find something it has to plow through them. The fewer and the shorter, the better. I'd love to fix this stuff but it isn't my app and I don't have the rights to distribute it, so the best I can do is offer workarounds based on knowledge of the code.
BTW... you mentioned instability after restarting the WPS too many times. I was skeptical because there are days when I restart it 20-30 times in a session and have no problem. However, since working on this and my own Dynamic Icons-related project, I see what you mean. Yet another problem in need of fixin'...
-
Rich, thanks again for all the help. This has been a learning experience for me. I too am finding a few things I missed along with fixing a few icons I missed. I still continue to replace an icon if I think I have a better one. I cannot thank Martin enough for allowing me to post here.

Hello David
I want to include your DynamicIcons (BigIcons) themes on hobbes, since they are comming very nice and works good.
I just want to ask you two things.
1) Can you create a generic readme.txt instructions that can be includes. It does not has to be personalized for each one, just generic. And also including a condition of use (license) for the icons.
2) I want to change the naming standard of the files just to have it according to what I have reoganizing at hobbes. I had already change it to:
- Black_BigIcons_r2.zip
- FileCabinets2_BigIcons_r2.zip
- FileCabinets_BigIcons_r2.zip
- LookingGlass2_BigIcons_r1.zip
- RearWindow_BigIcons_r1.zip
- Red_BigIcons_r1.zip
- Yellow_BigIcons_r2.zip
But do not worry about renaming these ones, just the future ones. Or if you have different naming suggestion, just let me know.

Martin, you have my permission. I ask that you wait, there will be revision #3 for some of the themes. I keep finding small errors. Give me a week to correct the errors and get a readme file together, When I am done, I will upload here and delete the previous versions. Then you can upload to Hobbes.

Martin, here is the green BigIcons theme that you can upload to hobbes when you are ready.

Thanks David, the green theme will be uploaded tonight.
Hobbes already made the directory I asked for this icon packs/themes to be included.
Are located here: https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/?path=%2Fpub%2Fmultimedia%2Fthemes%2Fdynicons
I called the directory DynIcons, because the formal name is "Dynamic Icons".

Martin, in the descriptions, you may want to put
for ArcaOS 5.0 and higher.

Just unzip and copy the icons to the theme you want to use them in along with the bigicons.txt file. Restart Desktop if you copy to the theme you are using. The seamonkey icons have not been tested since I do not have seamonkey. I had to guess at the ID's for it.

Hello David.
There was a request on a different thread of having a high resolution PNG icons that resemble as much as possible to the OS/2 2.0 icons. I found the idea interesting, creating a BIGICON Theme that resemble some old OS/2 like 2.0, Warp 3 or Warp 4 icons. But it is up to you if you have time and if you like the idea.

Martin, send me some pics of the icons. I have not used 2.11 in 30 Years. Don't remember much about the icons.

Ohh, you got me there. Even that I have an OS2 2.x VM, it does has all files as .ICO in the HDD. I will need someone that can let me know what will be the beast way to copy all the OS/2 icons in one shot.

I was playing around with the object desktop folders.
Tested on desktop. Not sure if working with earlier icons is worth the effort.

Hello Martin,
most icons are packed in DLL files. These can be extracted with Martin Lafaix's Resource Decompiler, for example. I quickly tried the pmwp.dll and the pmviop.dll. The result is in the ZIP file.
I am still looking for more images as soon as there is some time for it.
-
The difference between the two is that "SET BIGICONSPATH=" is correct (i.e. that's what the code looks for) while "SET BIGICONS=" is incorrect (i.e. the code doesn't look for this).
LOL...
I guess it took 6 years as nobody has felt the need to actually relocate the icons. :D
As for who is responsible for the error, I lifted the code section from the eCoSoft icon package verbatim, without validating it. Thus, the problem exists in Sunny Icons and its icon package, as well (so longer than 6 years, there). I should have looked at the code, where it is fairly obvious what the variable should be. Oh, well.
-
I was looking at adding Samba server png icons to the packages. The latest version is a zip file and installs nothing. The earlier version is a Warpin file. Everytime I tried to install it, the system hung. I tried it on two different partitions. I was looking for icon ids, but without a proper install, I am manually trying to figure out what icon goes to what exe file.
So right now, the easiest thing is to upload the new icons here, Download, unzip, and assign each icon to the program object it goes with. Eventually, they may end up in the Bigicon packages.

Don't download anymore of the themes. There will be one more update for all. Found a few more things I missed. I also found answers to some major problems that have alluded me. In the next releases, all the old OS/2 icons should be replaced. If there are some that don't update, reset the program object for those. It should no longer be a mix of old and new icons. I am slowly going through all the themes. It may be a few days before I upload. Guys, I am thrilled. These few remaining problems have eluded me for months. I think you will like all the major corrections.
I want a little input. I am thinking about changing the network drive icon. I uploaded a pic of the another that can be used. Which icon do you prefer. the old or the new?
I can add some of the samba icons to the packages if you want. If so, I need the *.exe for the restart samba, start samba, and stop samba to assign icons to.

Hi David,
I would say that 80a is very nice for local network drives while 80 for remote network drives (e.g. in cloud)

I like both. But if I had to choose, maybe I prefer the old one (drive-network_80a.png ), it looks more light to me.

Thanks David! Really enjoying trying out your icons (like I did when you made them for WPSWizard too). I'll give these a spin...

Thanks David.. WPSWizard, man that was a long time ago. I like the BigIcons better. They are easier to work with once one has his templates.
There was a folder stick theme l liked, but cannot recall the name of the theme.

I have trying to figure out why one of two of the epm folders will not use a PNG icon. I think it has something to do with no object id along with an assigned number in the Icon O date and Icon 1 data. It looks like normally an object with no object ID has no 0 and 1 icon data. See the attachments. NEPMD assigns some kind of number that cannot be changed.
HB Object Inspector. It is ashame Herwig never completed what he had planned. I would have gladly paid money for the completed version.

There will be one more version of the themes.
When I tried to clean up the bigicons.txt file, I deleted a couple of things I should not have. Missed one folder that needed to be added to the txt file. I am also going to make the RAM drives look like RAM disk instead of the rounded hard drives. It will apply only to the X and Y drives. Presently, you can only assign set drives letters for the RAM drives. The * does not work. I chose X and Y drives because most formatted drives are at the beginning letters and other type drives seem to use the middle letters. So when you create your RAM drives, use drive letters X and Y for them. That change will be in the next release. Also, the pink and looking glass themes will have the glass appearance added to the Appearance folder that is found in the BigIcons_Ice theme.
-
Shame if the ram disk drive letters are hard coded. Personally H: is my ram disk, X: is for TVFS (currently usually unused) and Y: is/was a development environment.
Wonder if doing something like putting in config.sys before the SET BIGICONSPATH= something like SET RAM_DRIVE_LETTER=X: then in your big icons file, use %RAM_DRIVE_LETTER% instead of X:
Need testing and not sure if the environment will carry over. Variable name can be different too.
-
I have to hard code it in the big icon.txt file. I can make them drive h and whatever most people are agreeable with. H shall be one of the selections. How about I for the other? You can still use other drive letters for the RAM disk. It will just show the rounded hard drive Icons.
I could add a readme for the RAM disk telling how to change the ram drive letter to the one you want.
-
Readme would work
-
Maybe you already know this, but each drive has its own ObjectID. For Drive H:, it's "<WP_DRIVE_H>". You can use this to assign a specific icon to any drive(s) you want.
-
Hi Rich
Yes I was aware of this. The problem is that everyone uses different drive letters for their RAM Drives. I will assign Drive H and I for the Ram disks icons. I will try to make people aware that if they use different Ram drives, they will have to go into the bigicons.txt file and edit the two lines
"<WP_DRIVE_H>" "ramdisk_80.png"
"<WP_DRIVE_I>" "ramdisk_80.png"
and change the H and I to the letters they use.
If they go into the desktop > system setup > wplace shell and change the Ram drives to H and I, they will need to save and then shut down ArcaOS for the changes to take effect. A reboot will not work. This may be because I had
If possible, preserve contents after a warm boot checked.
If they don't use ram drives, or they don't care about the icon reflecting what type of drive it is, they will need to put a ; in front of the statement ot make it a comment.
;"<WP_DRIVE_H>" "ramdisk_80.png"
;"<WP_DRIVE_I>" "ramdisk_80.png"
I tried
;"<WP_DRIVE_*>"
but that did not work.

It would e nice if the RAMDISK could be included in the drives info. This is how a the network drive is determined in the bigicons.txt file.

This is a new theme - BigIcons_Brown
This contains the new Ramdisk icon and the updated BigIcons.txt file.
If you want to use the Ramdisk icon in your other themes, copy it's bigicons.txt file to the other themes along with it media-ramdisk_80.png
Presently, there is no way in ArcaOS to set hard drives to where a RAM disk is automatically recognized and the appropriate drive letter assigned to a specific icon.
BigIcons does allow one to manually set drive letters for RAM drives when Dynamic icons are activated in the Workplace Shell setup icon located in the System Setup folder.
In the BigIcons.txt file found in each theme, look for the lines
;---------------Drive folder icons -- (desktop\computer\drives)
"<WP_DRIVES>" "folder_drives_closed.png","folder_drives_open.png"
"<WP_DRIVE_A>" "media-floppy_80.png"
"<WP_DRIVE_B>" "media-floppy_80.png"

"<WP_DRIVE_T>" "media-cd_80.png"
"<LVMREFRESH>" "media-LVM_refresh_80.png"
"<PDP_SMARTPFA>" "drive-harddisk.png"
"<WP_BOOT>" "media-floppy_80.png"
;"<WP_DRIVE_H>" "media-ramdisk_80.png"
;"<WP_DRIVE_I>" "media-ramdisk_80.png"
The semi-colon is used to comment out the two lines for RAM drive icons. To enable the RAM disk icon to be used, just remove the semi-colon. The default ramdrive letters are H and I. Change these to the drive letters you use, or open the ramdisk setup icon in the System Setup folder and change the Ramdrive to H and I, save, and restart desktop.
If you use only one ramdisk, remove the semi-colon statement from only one of the ramdisk statements and change to the ramdisk drive letter you use.
"<WP_DRIVE_X>" "media-ramdisk_80.png"
If you don't use a ramdisk or you prefer the default harddrive icon, you need do nothing.
-
I decided to make separate System Setup Folder options icons. That way if you do not like the default set, you just unzip the theme you want to try to a temporary directory and then copy them over the icons in the theme folder you want changed. If you don't like, just repeat with a different theme set. These packages also contain icon corrects for the icons used in the setup folder.
Always restart the desktop after an icon(s) change.
-
Just doodling again.
Made another System_Setup_Folder Grey Theme called Grey2.
Just unzip and copy over the chosen themes icons with these and restart desktop. If you do not like, copy the Standard Grey theme over them or one of the other themes over them.

Hello
I have an issue with DynamicIcons (aka BigIcons). I enable it by:
- SET BIGICONSPATH=
- Going to "System Setup -> Workplace Shell -> Icon Size tab -> "Use Custom Icons"
Now the issue: I like the PNG icon themes, I want to keep it, but it blocks me from seeing the .ICO on the desktop. I'm attaching the after and before pics.
Is there a way to disable just the display of the .ICO PNG Image so I can keep seeing the actual .ICO on the desktop?
Yeah, I know, you can't make the entire world happy ;D ;D

Hello. I think I found the answer myself.
I just removed ""*.ico" "image_file_80.png"" from the bigicons.txt file, rebooted and good to go.

Make another Orange System Setup folder theme which can be used to replace an existing theme inside the main BigIcons theme folders.

This can be done for individual folders.
Open the folder that contains the OS/2 icons.
Right click inside the folder (white empty space) to bring up the menu.
Select Icons
Select Normal.
This overrides the system default for that folder.

I did another system folder icon set. Just unzip and copy to the theme folder that you want the system icons replaced. Remember the other packages in case if you want the originals back.

Hello David.
I liked this one too. Just two question here:
1) What is the arrow.gfie file?
2) Checking the "Buff themes", do you also include the folder backgrounds? I think I only found the icons, not the backgrounds.

Arrow.gfie ia another type of graphics file. The file is not used. I just failed to remove it. A lot of these themes don't come with backgrounds. I noticed in linux that they use a lot of dark backgrounds. There is one background file that goes good with the last two themes. The last three themes I have done are unique in that most icons have to be redone so the themes don't look like a mess. It like starting from scratch because most icons have to be renamed, modified or created to match our programs and system.
The drawingboard theme was unique that it came with two backgrounds. This theme somehow disappeared from the net. There are partials of people trying to recreate it, but not the original that was on the net over 10 years ago. If had had not created a version for ecomstation years ago, there would not be much to look at. It was done in OS/2 icons. I made PNG equivalents, added more icons that were not included in the original eCS package.
Drawingboard, Umicons, and Buff themes are a way to preserve these themes should they disappear from the net. In eCS, one could modify just about everything, titlebar, titlebar buttons, buttons, selection buttons, and property backgrounds. ArcaOS allows some, but not all of this.
Made a quick titlebar and button for Buuf.
the last png shows the background color which is used for its backgrounds.

is there a way to change the standard background in folders from white to an image (*.bmp).

This should work for most backgrounds that do not use a bitmap or PNG image.
Archive your Desktop before starting. That way you have a way to restore your desktop back to this point.
Open the system setup folder
Open the Appearance folder
Open the mixed color palette
Select your color
Hold the alt key while dragging the color you selected to one of the open window backgrounds.
To my knowledge, there is no way to make an image the default for all the folders.

Hi David.
I found the way to show the PNG icons on the "Tree View", but not on the "Details View". Is that a limitation of the "Dynamic Icons" or the Workplace Shell?

Regards
Martin, I am no expert, but my guess it is a workplace shell limitation at this time. Rich had said WPShell was a mess, but he was only able to fix a small amount while he worked for ArcaNoa.
-
my guess it is a workplace shell limitation at this time. Rich had said WPShell was a mess
No, I said Dynamic Icons was a mess. Multiple shortcomings prevent Details view support and limit Tree view to the same sized icons as Icon view. Here's why:
1) DI's "dirty little secret" is that it creates a separate, standalone PNG image for every single object you see during a session. When you open a folder with 100 JPGs, it generates 100 png images each requiring 16k. The same is true for every folder, every datafile, every everything. Over the course of a session you could end up with thousands of images.
2) DI caches these images to avoid the compute-intensive job of recreating them. However, each object can only cache one icon. If you display an object in Icon view at 64 pixels, then open the same folder in Details view using 32 pixel icons, DI will have to destroy all of the 64px images and recreate them at 32px. In a worst-case scenario where both views are open, DI might have to destroy and recreate every icon for every refresh!
Happily, there's a solution in the pipeline for #1. After our earlier discussion, I rewrote large parts of DI to eliminate duplicate icons as much as possible. Some users may see an 80-90% reduction in DI's memory usage when AN releases it. However, it will require a thoroughly revised 'bigicons.txt' file to achieve these savings. @David, could you send me a PM with your email address so we can discuss this and exchange files?
Sadly, the shortcomings that prevent Details view support and limit Tree view will remain for the foreseeable future...

Found a couple of small errors. Re-uploaded the Black theme.

The drawingboard theme based on the MacOS 9 theme.
Its icons are now PNGs instead of OS/2 icons. I had to recreate lots of icons. The icons now look good at even the larger viewing sizes.
Tried to give the program folder icons more of an earlier time look to go with the theme.
Only added a few program PNGs to the theme. I figured the OS/2 program icons go more with this theme. The ones I replaced either did not have an icon or the OS/2 icons looked bad at the larger viewing sizes.

I did not replace the drive icons because I think the ones we already use are better.
