Networking / Re: ArcaMapper and Network Protocols
« on: January 19, 2024, 10:07:54 am »
how does Samba server fit into ArcaOS, as it seems ArcaMapper is about using Samba Client

It's no different than, say, http:
* if you want your machine to send files to other computers on request, Samba Server
* if you want your machine to request files from other computers, Samba Client

A Peer network just combines both functions in a single package.

Hey Dave,
Do you know if there is a way to turn that off?

PMFJI...  SET LIBC_UNIX_EAS=[drive letters to include or !exclude]

For example, I disable them on all drives except my boot drive (N:) using:
  SET LIBC_UNIX_EAS=!C-M,N,!O-Z

You can use individual letters or create ranges; use '!' to negate a letter or range.

Note 1: these EAs must be allowed on your boot drive (or maybe it's just your %UNIXROOT% drive) or "bad things will happen".

Note 2; for many of us, the biggest source of these annoyances (IMHO) is Info-Zip. I use an older version which doesn't create them.

by now it should be well known that when libcx0 traps it's common sense to look in %UNIXROOT/var/log/libcx in case a libcx log was generated.

"Common sense"? "well known"? Oh really... I guess you live in a different cave than I do because I have never once heard of this nor do I have a '%UNIXROOT/var/log/libcx' directory. Well, now I know. Thanks for sharing.

BTW... common sense has been shown to be a fallacy. It's what people who already know the answer say to those who don't. Stripped of their a priori knowledge, those who cite "common sense" usually prove every bit as clueless as the rest of us.

This machine has everything needed to enroll AN's key and run in Secure Boot mode. In the screenshot above (https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=3537.0;attach=10934) which shows UEFI options, you'd select key management,

Add "AUTOFAIL=YES" to your 'config.sys'. It prevents this sort of popup and always returns an error to the app.

I don't understand why this has to be tied to any existing mirroring site. Why not 'hobbes.os2voice.org' ?

ArcaOS does come with the keys needed for secure boot. They're on the EFI partition under \efi\os2.
Currently you do have to figure out how to install them.

There's a package to automate the installation of AN's public keys that was demonstrated at WarpStock. I used it a few months ago and it works great - I can't understand why it hasn't been released yet.

Setup & Installation / Re: Broken AOS-5.1 Trash Can
« on: January 12, 2024, 11:58:55 pm »
my AOS-5.1's Trash Can got corrupted

I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems but there's less here than meets the eye.

* There's a 'Trash' folder in the root directory of every drive whose files have gone in the Trash. It's done that way to avoid having to copy anything - the trashed file's directory entry is simply moved to another directory.

* Trash folders are only protected by the 'Hidden' flag, and AFAIK, never by the 'System' flag. Once you get past that, they are completely deletable, whether from the commandline or the WPS. The only reasons I can think of for being unable to delete one is that a file in the Trash is currently open, or you have a commandline session whose current directory is a Trash (sub)directory.

* Personally, I never use the thing and habitually hit Shift-Delete to bypass it. I also regularly delete my Trash folders if they happen to get created. As a test, I created then deleted files on two different drives, giving me the "Trash Full" icon. After opening each drive in Xview, I then deleted both Trash directory trees from the root folders . No problems there. The Desktop Trash icon still showed full and continued to do so even after a Desktop restart, so I opened it. The folder was empty and the icon reverted to "empty".

BTW... when I'm in a situation like you were and seemingly nothing is going right, I resort to the "Windows Miracle Cure": reboot and hope for the best :)

Programming / Re: Bigicons

Maybe you already know this, but each drive has its own ObjectID. For Drive H:, it's "<WP_DRIVE_H>". You can use this to assign a specific icon to any drive(s) you want.

Maybe Rich will have a look.

I've been working on it since you provided enough info that I could consider this a bug report and not just a complaint.

What I've found so far is that the problem starts upstream of wpRefresh(). wpRefresh runs synchronously and will hang the Desktop for as long as needed if there are multiple requests. That's why the upstream function, fdrForceRefresh(), spins off a separate thread to invoke it. Before doing so it checks for FOI_REFRESHINPROGRESS and aborts if set. The only trouble is that I've yet to see it set, and if _I_ set it, wpRefresh() does nothing. I'm going to reorder the sequence of events to see if that makes a difference. If not, I'll have to add something to each folder's data to signal that an XWP-initiated refresh is in progress.

The apple iphones have translation software.  One can translate from English to Dutch is one so choses.

I am no programmer, but if it s matter of replacing English text with Dutch, I might possibly could do that using my iphone for the translations.

There's also Google translate. The problem is the translations of technical stuff is usually not very good.

To expand on this... I've read that Google Translate and the like have gotten much better. Supposedly they've added AI techniques to better understand the context so the software can choose the appropriate word. But that's of little help when text to be translated is single words and short phrases. The person doing the work has to add the context - perhaps multiple times in multiple ways - to avoid getting a laughably bad result.

For example... A few days ago I had to confirm the translation of the word "screen" into German. If I just put in "screen" I got a long list of words - after all, it doesn't know if I'm talking about a computer screen or a screen door. I had to try "computer screen", "television sreen", etc, to triangulate on the correct word. In the case of phrases, I may have to reword it several different ways to ensure the vocabulary remains the same (e.g. to confirm that the word for "screen" doesn't change from one phrase to the next). Currently, machine translation takes a lot of work.

I'm hoping AI will make it easier by letting you specify the context, such as "I need to translate some words and phrases associated with computers into German".  We'll see...

It's a folder with 362 Icon files.

Thanks for sharing that little detail. I was able to duplicate this easily once I knew what you were talking about (though I suspect they were actually PNG icons, not "icons"). Blame the MM classes...

Options -> Character font... -> [change the font].  Some fonts do not have every character..

when I was doing business in Spain I had professional translators translate all our paperwork to Spanish and considered it a cost of doing business there.

And if the cost of those professional translators were a multiple of the profits you could ever hope to make in Spain, would you have done business there? If your answer is no, then you've given AN all the justification it needs to _never_ release AOS in Dutch. It just isn't economic unless the translations are done pro bono.

Totally frozen, Dutch will be available with version 5.2, but they didn't mentioned which sub version. So I don't know if the hardware will last that long, I'm afraid that this is  some kind of "goodbye". I have to wait at least for another year if not more. Also no translation requests received, so its firmly on the back-burner.[...] So, a lot of promises, with version 5.0 its promised, but no delivery. Not good. I'm not sure if I'm willing to translate with this knowledge.

If there's anyone to blame for this situation, it's your fellow countrymen.

For years I've been looking for a Dutch translator for XWP and haven't found one. For v1.0.14, I had to crowd-source my Dutch translations from people here on os2world. Sadly, they haven't been seen here since the pandemic, so I suspect they're no longer with us. So, who's left? If I can't get someone to translate 20-30 phrases every year or two, how can you expect AN to turn out something far, far larger? It seems unrealistic.
