....Or maybe a solution would be to scan dates/times of RAM Disk files at intervals and save to (eg) SSD any that become more than a certain amount newer than a reference date/time.  (Hope that makes sense.) ...
I don't think so. Write speed to our RAM drive is slower than to one of my SSDs. Even when formated with JFS. YMMV.

Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS Sluggishness

I gave up using HPFS(386) years ago. Reasons -
- long chkdsk times
- no >2GB files possible
- shared memory used by HPFS(386) can be used for better purposes

I see no advantage in using HPFS(386) anymore.

Setup & Installation / Re: 5.1 and Samba/can't make it work!
« on: October 12, 2023, 09:38:51 am »
If you mean your Samba setup does not work anymore putting ArcaOS5.1 into your network then it maybe because NTLM1 is no longer allowed per default. There are security reasons for that. I'm pretty sure I found something about on AN wiki pages.

From memory I think I had to add minprotocol = NTLM1 and client minprotocol = NTLM1 in smb.conf to see my old machines from my ArcaOS5.1 installation. If you don't find exact information with this info I'll look into my smb.conf when I'm back home. But can take days... Guess there must be some information on the newly installed system too. But at least I didn't find it.

Setup & Installation / Re: Adding system components on existing installing

You can select it from the installer when you start from scratch. Be aware you can't run IBM Peer/LanMan over TCP/IP at the same time with Samba. But you can add in NAPS Netbios only (and not Netbios over TCP/IP). Then it should work side by side with Samba (server and client/ArcaMapper). You also have to take care that \ibmlan\netprog does not come before your unixroot in path. Or rename \ibmlan\netprog\net.exe to f.i. neti.exe.

\mptn\bin\setup.cmd and \ibmcom\lantran.log may be of interest.

Hardware / Re: Touch Screen and Pen support on ArcaOS 5.1.0

So perhaps all recent machines that have a serial port have PCI ones.
This is true for Notebooks, but not for desktop boards. Don't know how much are available but if you look for a standard COM port, they still exist one some motherboards. Sometimes there's only the header on the board and you need to buy a matching cable to get it to the back side of your PC.

I guess what the Intel management engine includes (sometimes it reports itself as Com42:) is something you can't use for anything else then let Intel manage your system. But I'm not an expert here. I only switch IME off on all my systems as much as possible.

I seem to remember that the VAC 3.6.5 package is lacking a source code debugger
My 3.6.5 does have idebug included. It identifies itself as beeing Version 3.6.5 Fixpak 2.

I'm not sure if 3.0.8 includes the multithreaded libraries. Back then I need to compile XWP and my widget with 3.6.5 instead 3.0.8 to get a multi-threaded widget working.

(Tried to attach the full change list. But html is not allowed. So renamed to txt.)

Applications / Re: ArcaOS 5.1 - First Impressions
« on: September 05, 2023, 09:13:40 am »
Installed 5.1.  First impressions are that it boots up faster than the previous versions. ....
Why do you think it boots faster? Did you measure a difference? Do you have any idea what's changed to make it faster?

I cant think of anything else except accidentally waiting on IP address (dhcpstart with wrong parameter) in config.sys which can make booting other ArcaOS installation slower. Puzzling.....

have defaulted to WPA-3 only (which might not be supported by ArcaOS 5.1).
Our XWLAN / wpa_supplicant definitely don't support WPA3. As we don't even have nearly current wifi NIC drivers there's no need for further wpa_supplicant/XWLAN development also.

If you use VBOX and Seamonkey and try to open AOO or Dooble then for sure your lower shared mem runs out. Even on my system with >300MB lower shared mem after boot. VBOX is the biggest memory hook. Maybe cause my WinXP guest runs at about 3500x2000 pixel resoltution. But SM needs a lot of mem too. I stopped using IBMs LanMan (requester, server) to save some shared mem.

General Discussion / Re: Why doesn't Bitwise answer my email?

Andi. Read the remark to me from Silvan that indeed is the case except I never did get a bounce notice.
I read it more than once but still don't know who's server/email settings are the problem. If the problem is on your side then I think it's high time for an excuse cause of the wording in your initial post.

I still wonder if Eugenes email provider does not work or Silvans. And if it does not work if someone gets the mandatory failure message (which should include some hints why the mail server decided not to work as it is supposed to do) or if some idiotically server trashes emails without notice.

Networking / Re: [SOLVED] Release IP and Refresh IP from DHCP
« on: July 25, 2023, 03:42:04 pm »
Hi Andi B.

I have interest to also test your DHCP Client. Since OS/2 wifi does not work at all on my laptop I didn't notice you implemented that.
Can you give me a pointer (link) to your latest version?

Regards
It should be in 'yum install dhclient'. Not sure if the very latest changes are implemented as Yuri made the packages. But I don't think there has been any changes in the last years. And dhclient worked much better than OS/2 DHCP client ever did. If we ever get new wifi drivers I may look at it again.

DHCP client in eCS And ArcaOS can be very slow compared
I've said it on other places and do it again - the OS/2 included DHCP client is buggy especially when you're on a network with more than one DHCP server. Although it was unusual (you may say even forbidden) in the past in today's environment it's not that unusual anymore. AFAIR OS/2 DHCP client sends DHCP accept messages to the the wrong DHCP server which didn't send to offer message.

Bottom line - don't use OS/2 DHCP client. That's all about why I implemented dhclient (ISC version) to xwlan back then. Something like 'dhclient lan0' sounds like a good replacement to IBMs old DHCP client.

Setup & Installation / Re: USB to Serial adapter setup
« on: July 19, 2023, 09:39:00 am »
Have you tried to set another port than 'the first available' for your USB/serial converter? I've something like -
Code: [Select]
DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBCOM.SYS /M:4 /N:COM5in my config.sys. My first PL2303 uses COM5: the second COM6: (maybe COM6 and COM7, check with mode command) and so on. Guess /M means using up to max. 4 USB/serial converters but not sure. There is an usbcom.txt which should explain all the parameters.

I think USB 12.14 was the first which worked satisfactorily for me. Before I used the special PL2303 driver with
Code: [Select]
DEVICE=P:\util\USBCOM_PL2303\usbcom.sys /V /M:1 /N:COM5 /Z
DEVICE=P:\util\USBCOM_PL2303\usbcom.sys /V /M:1 /N:COM6 /Z
DEVICE=P:\util\USBCOM_PL2303\usbcom.sys /V /M:1 /N:COM7 /Z
DEVICE=P:\util\USBCOM_PL2303\usbcom.sys /V /M:1 /N:COM8 /Z
