Hi Doug,

This is cleared up :)

OS2DASD.DMD has always taken parameters, simply not always documented.

I am however certain that /FULLSIZE and /BOOTABLE were publically documented somewere, maybe in Dani's readme for her DaniS506.ADD ?

/FULLSIZE should be the default for Disk 1 and onwards but I noted that this did need to be stipulated for a Western Digital 1TB HD I formatted from new, for the full capacity to be seen a few years ago.

added:-
there is a note in the IDEDASD package about options you have to apply to OS2DASD.DMD for harddisks greater than 512GB in size.

Internet / Re: Most stable Apache, php, mysql...
« on: February 05, 2014, 05:54:07 pm »
Hi Andy,

I cant help you with the first question,

The second question could be answered via http://groups.google.com/group/apache2

there is also :-
MySQL/2 at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mysql-os2/
and
eCS-ISP at http://lists.2rosenthals.com

The Apache group would be the best to search and/or ask questions on for Apache and
all that can run with it. A recap put here for history wouldn't go astray either.

With the recent Apache v2.x.x/MySQL/PHP builds, from memory there are some niggles re stability with but a lot also depends on what else is on the server, the load etc.

What I has is rock solid but it is quite old now, and that's not something I want to mention the versions in public, even though it's well protected.

It's been a while since I've heard anything about a LAMP/AMPOS2, and a quick look I don't see anything recent for OS/2 or eComStation.

Cheers

You can ignore the intermediate host timeouts, they are likely to be routers with ICMP dropped.

83.227.149.79 is the end point for os2world.com so that's all good.

If you do have an MTU problem, I would expect you would notice problems going to other websites,
you could try using an MTU value of 1452 to start with (cable/DSL) to see if that does make a difference.
If on dialup start with a value of 528. If your using DSL and PPPoA 1500 should be fine.

It does look more like a problem with your providers routing more than anything else at present.
still a big maybe on that though due to the minimal information so far.

PS...
If it makes it to 83.227.149.79 or the one before, os2world.com is probably down :)

Hi Dave,

Next time it happens, send me a tracerte and I'll check for routing problems on the NOG's.
I do know there are some rearrangements happening with the BGP in europe, for various reasons

especially if http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ says its up.

Cheers

I'm looking at using a 1 TB USB portable hard drive. But eCS sees it as a 500 GB drive. What do I need to do to see the full 1 TB?

On the assumption you have the latest drivers.

BASEDEV=OS2DASD.DMD /D:0 /BOOTABLE /D:1 /FULLSIZE

 /D:0 = first disk, D:1 = second disk - boot then format HD's
/FULLSIZE   ONLY use on a new disk onwards for 500Gb or bigger

You might have to use FDISK or JFSEE to clear the first few sectors on the harddisk.
I started with clean new HD's, I simply put them in the ext USB cases, connect then,
power up, LVM, new volume etc, format as JFS, then simply use it.  (grammar correction)

I use 1 and 2TB HD's in external USB cases to backup my local drives and the server drives.

Games / MAME 0.151 ROMs

From the internet archive,
https://archive.org/details/MAME_0.151_ROMs

Quote
MAME (an acronym of Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) is an emulator application designed to recreate the hardware of arcade game systems in software on modern personal computers and other platforms. The intention is to preserve gaming history by preventing vintage games from being lost or forgotten. The aim of MAME is to be a reference to the inner workings of the emulated arcade machines; the ability to actually play the games is considered "a nice side effect".

MAME_0.151_ROMs.zip = 42.8 GB
Internet where I am has gone downhill fast, so as much as I'd like to d/l this one, it will have to wait.

I notice a lot of Horde hacks in my apache logs, but none for squirrel.

I don't use os2world email but if I did, I would factor in the above when I make a choice.

It could simply be that horde is so popular, just like cockroaches :)

General Discussion / Re: hobbes.nmsu.edu information
« on: December 08, 2013, 07:12:37 pm »
More work 'might' be done to hobbes soon, part of our submission was for the scripts to accept some other archive formats such as rar and 7z but lets face it, how many people use some of the other formats these days ?

I think its a good idea to stick to zip, wpi, or exe files as most people have WPI installed, and all OS/2 - eCS users have unzip (as provided with base OS/2). RAR is also ok as its increased in use.

99.99% of tar files uploaded to hobbes incoming are dodgy files, so I dont think there is much interest in keeping that as an acceptable file extension.

On the file case, yes, files were all converted to lowercase when they are moved by the scripts on the old hobbes server, I haven't checked I assume its the same with the current hobbes server. The input scripts that handle this DO look for identical filenames case wise, with the relevant txt extension, this is also a great way to remove dodgy files which don't have a descriptions file.  It shouldn't be to hard to modify the scripts to convert then check, or even do a [aA] on identifying files but that's up to NMSU.edu.

I'll add the file case stuff to my list and pass along, that's a good idea :)

General Discussion / hobbes.nmsu.edu information
« on: December 07, 2013, 06:09:16 am »
Hi Everyone,

For those that upload files to hobbes.nmsu.edu , the system used at hobbes is CASE sensitive.

Please ensure all the text matches between the file name and the template  file that goes with it. (the filenames, not the contents of the template).

Also, if replacing an earlier file, make sure that the case listed matches the file listed found in the archive.

The easiest option is to ensure all file names are lowercase but its your call :)

Note that if you have a failed upload, you can either rename the file OR delete the file, you have a few minutes in which to do this.

Utilities / Re: PMVNC & Linux?
« on: October 01, 2013, 08:25:39 am »
PMVNC v104 works fine from OS/2 to MAC (my wifes) and to Free BSD (My new computer).

Haven't tried it in the other direction yet, though I will soon to ensure I can access my OS/2 and AIX servers ok.
OS/2 will end up in a virtual PC under BSD, eventually. Still cant find alternatives to some of my OS/2 programs.

Hi Phil,

trying to start win16 session  (window crashes no error msg)
(full screen  C:\  loading please wait
after a few moments reverts back to ecs desk top)

Funny you should mention that, it's happening to me out of the blu with my accounting package, the hardware has not changed on that PC.

I've also noted that when I changed the memory settings for the Win16 session, it doesn't save them either but simply puts them back to the system defaults, so it might not be the same problem as yours. Next time I'm in front of that PC I'll try Andy's hint, I might have to dig deeper re the session/property settings not being saved I suspect.

Applications / Re: Java applications Jedit 5.1.0
« on: August 15, 2013, 05:50:21 pm »
Hi Ivan,

I rename them as I download them, I dislike overwriting in case I find I have to back level, thats why I had to check the file name left in the directory but I scraped the jar file name instead of the zip file and pasted that in my post above, didnt give it a second thought until I came back and read the follow posts.

The latest Jalbum zip does work but now I need to find a new skin, as my previous skin doesn't like the new Jalbum. Thats a skin version check thing though, so at least the lastest JAlbum works ok. Back to Jedit - nothing to see here with JAlbum now.

I do wonder though if there was a Java compiler issue or something that caused the filename problems ? Just a fleeting thought.

I agree with everyone else, use the jalbum zip file, none of the installers have worked for a very long time.

I cut and pasted the wrong file name as I grab the jar file for my wife, the one I should have cut n pasted was jalbum11.2.5.zip
