Programming / Re: obtaining programmer editors
« on: September 30, 2016, 10:46:27 pm »
I thought we found out that Visual SlickEdit version 4 was released as free abandonware. It was on the eComStation e-mail list, but I can't find it now.

I have a licensed copy of version 4, but I'm a little curious about the status of the program.

Setup & Installation / Re: Thinkpad T540p and eCS
« on: September 27, 2016, 06:48:41 pm »
Thanks for all the suggestions. As I continue to work on this, I found that with the hard disk I formatted under eCS 2.2 b2 installed, and using ACPI /WV, the CD-ROM boot now hangs on "Installed OS2LVM.DMD".

This is different. I expect the boot process has completed loading base devices and is on to its next task.

The BIOS is as Eugene suggested.

Keep those suggestions coming in. Thanks!!!

Setup & Installation / Thinkpad T540p and eCS
« on: September 26, 2016, 04:22:56 am »
I'm still struggling to get this to boot. An earlier thread shows success with an Thinkpad X250, so I thought I might ask for help to get the T540p running.

http://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,948.0.html

I've cloned my X200 system disk, and while it starts to boot in the T540p, it gets hung up while displaying the boot logo.

I tried booting from both the eCS 2.2 b2 Dec 30 installation disk and from my own boot DVD using later drivers. Both seem to hang. eCS 2.2 b2 hangs on OS2LVM.DMD.

At this point, I can move the disk back to X200 and modify, then try again. What might I change to get this working?

Hardware / Re: New Laptop with AMD Processor
« on: September 14, 2016, 03:49:57 pm »
Dell do make some but you have to be careful to specify an AMD processor or they will dump the intel one on you (that appears to all be part of the intel microshaft take over the PC market thing).

The one advantage with the Dell units is that you can get a service manual that details how to change parts including the wireless card.  The bad thing is that the larger 17" units only have a 1600x900 screen resolution (the intel based units have a 1920x1080 screen).

If I can talk Dell France into letting me get my hands on one to test (we have a client that wants to replace some servers so it might happen) I will see what works and what doesn't.

If you do, and especially if it is an Intel, please post results here. I have rarely seen a report for a laptop that you could still buy.

Internet / Re: Thunderbird 38.6.0
« on: September 10, 2016, 04:50:32 pm »
Although iCloud will not open for me in Firefox 38 beta 7, I am still able to open the Calendar on Thunderbird.

I have another question about Thunderbird. Can I store messages as one message per file instead of MBOX (all messages in one file) format?

Do these instructions work?

At least the first page of drive.google.com loads fine, and my files are still there.

iCloud still does not load here.

Internet / iCloud access
« on: September 07, 2016, 04:00:10 pm »
iCloud stopped working for me again. I point the browser to the main iCloud page, and the little wheel spins for a while, then a message box comes up, offering to send the log to Apple.

The web console shows the following message, then it shows an ad to come work for Apple as a developer, and then a lot of other error messages.

mutating the [[Prototype]] of an object will cause your code to run very slowly; instead create the object with the correct initial [[Prototype]] value using Object.create

iCloud has been working for me since the release of Firefox 38 beta6. Before that it crashed with a different error, and before that it was working on Firefox 31. I imagine that Apple has now made changes that Firefox 38 beta 7 cannot support.

To see the error, point the browser at https://www.icloud.com. I'm hoping a newer port of Firefox, or else a bug fix will restore access.

Networking / Re: Bluetooth

I occasionally use Bluetooth with OS/2. It's wonky, but I set up VNC, an iPhone and whatever bluetooth peripherals I want.

Setup & Installation / Re: eCS install problems on a recent mainboard

Ouch. That is pretty slow for a modern computer.

Yes, Sysbench runs CPU test multi-threaded. Most OS/2 usage is single threaded, so the higher speed for four cores can be pretty misleading.

My three generations back (but still available new) computer is running more than twice the speed for i7 and nearly twice for dual core celeron. By the way, Celeron all the way for OS/2. i7 gave very little additional performance for a lot of additional money.

Setup & Installation / Re: Panorama video driver question
« on: August 04, 2016, 05:34:38 pm »
From the eCS quick-start guide:

Q: When I try to start a DOS or Win16 window, I get a popup message saying that the video mode is not supported. What do I do?

A: You can try two things:

1. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file and locate the line which loads VSVGA.SYS. Add the following switch to the end of the line:

/int10textgrfxsafe

You may also need to edit AUTOEXEC.BAT and add the following lines to the end of the file:

mode co80
cls

2. If solution 1 does not work, try changing the name of the VSVGA.SYS driver in CONFIG.SYS to “VVGA.SYS” instead.

Applications / Re: FF and TB not running at the same time.
« on: July 28, 2016, 11:15:23 pm »
I'm now running Firefox 38.8.0 and Thunderbird 38.8.0 at the same time. Memory is marked however it was when I downloaded it. My run parameters are !K for firefox and !LK for Thunderbird.

The system is a bit fragile, but after a reboot, it always works for a while.

Article Discussions / Re: Writing bug reports
« on: July 25, 2016, 03:43:45 pm »
I have a problem with the klondike program and mahjongg . The problem is that some days I play with them without problems , and other days both programs are blocked , stopping both the team forcing me to restart .
I have not opened any mistake, because do not know how I can get more information about this error.
I have not found any file.log
And neither wanted to open a bug with nothing of problem info.
Can someone tell me how to get more information from the error issue.

Saludos ,Thanks

This sounds like you have exhausted a system resource that cannot be recovered. Shared memory may be the resource. Or not. I do not know how to display the usage of system resources in a way that can help. Actually the games you play may be the best monitor of when you need to reboot.

Programming / Re: Poll: Your favorite text editor

Add me to the list of Visual SlickEdit users. Fairly good source code browsing. I use it mostly for C and C++, but sometimes for REXX and HTML.

Good tagging is a must for an editor, so that's what would lead me to switch. From any function, let me go to the definition. From the definition, let me go to a list of all the locations that function is used.

Once I tried to update it to read the values via ACPI cause I do not use a system anymore which is supported by current version. But unfortunately the temperature sample code in ACPI-toolkit does not compile without stuff I believe only David has on his system :-( Maybe I should open a ticket at AN.

I think you should open that ticket. I compiled the sample code a few versions ago.
