Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS, VirtualBox, and mouse freezes
« on: January 08, 2022, 07:15:20 pm »
I updated the VB Guest Additions to match the version of VB and I have only had one mouse freeze in about a week. To recover from that mouse freeze, I used the shutdown command in 4OS2 and then rebooted the VM. Subsequent to that, the clipboard operation in most of the VMs (most are Redhat, but there is one Ubuntu, in addition to ArcaOS), has been spotty, and is deteriorating. I can no longer copy between VMs and sometimes even within the same VM.

The "simple" workaround is to reboot everything including the Redhat host, but that is painful with six running VMs and numerous apps.

At this point, it is looking like this is most likely a VB issue.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. The script for creating the VB Guest Additions Warpin package i still in the works.

Setup & Installation / Re: VirtualBox and Warpin (wic.exe)
« on: January 01, 2022, 04:36:45 pm »
I built the Guest Additions WPI package for VB 6.1.28, removed the version that came with ArcaOS 5.0.7, and installed version 6.1.28. The process went smoothly, but it's still too early to tell if this will resolve the mouse freeze issue in the ArcaOS VM. I did confirm that some of the files had changed between the two versions, but the VBOXMOUSE driver was not one of them.

One other thing I've discovered: the mouse in ArcaOS is virtually unusable without the Guest Additions. I was able to open a 4OS session and the Computer folder on the Desktop, but from there I had to use the keyboard.

Thanks to every one who helped me get the WPI package built. I'm working on a REXX script to streamline the process I used, and I'll post a write up and the script here.

May all of you have a happy and blessed new year!

So I extracted the install script (wic -X) from the VirtualBox WPI file and listed the package (wic -l), but I have not found a way to list the specific files in the package other than extracting them with wic -x. It looks like I should be able to delete the 9 files, add the newer versions from the Guest Additions ISO, update the script (see below), and add that, as well.

Archive: "vboxadd.wpi"
WPI revision: 3
Stub size: 0 bytes
Package 1
9 files, size:  5,107,122 bytes original
                     1,694,924 bytes compressed (67% compression)
Summary: 1 package(s), 9 files total
     5,107,122 bytes original
     1,694,924 bytes compressed (67% compression)

The version string for the PACKAGEID in the install script would need to be changed:
<PCK INDEX=1 PACKAGEID="Oracle\VirtualBox\Client Additions\6\1\12"

What am I missing?

Thanks,

Setup & Installation / VirtualBox and Warpin (wic.exe)

I'm interested in finding out how much effort is involved in creating the Warpin package for the VirtualBox Guest Additions. I maintain a number of ArcaOS VMs and I'm hoping there is an easier method than just manually updating the guest additions every time I move to newer releases of VirtualBox.

If you install a new VB version, you will need to manually update the OS/2 additions. Somewhere in the VB GUI you will find an option to attach the additions. That will put the additions on the first CD-ROM Drive letter in your OS/2 guest. Unlock any DLLs in the "os2additions" Folder and then copy over and restart the guest.

I have not tried this, yet. I simply kept the VB guest additions that were installed by ArcaOS. I'm used to installing the guest additions manually, so I'll give it a try.

Replacing the mouse did not eliminate the issue. I'd like to identify the specific layer(s), but that is tricky. There are physical hardware components (motherboard, chipset, etc.), the host OS (Redhat) and drivers, VirtualBox, ArcaOS, VB guest additions, and perhaps others. I use SAMBA extensively, for example, and I've noticed that the number of shares and files puts quite a load on the ArcaOS VM. So I've backed off some of the shares, and that has helped some.

I found the answer to the testlog question here: https://www.arcanoae.com/wiki/producing-diagnostic-log-files/

I'll post a log after the condition occurs again.

AMOUSE.SYS rendered the system unusable. The mouse pointer moves erratically within the VM and clicking on objects produces no results. As a point of information, this VM is a fresh install of ArcaOS 5.0.7, and I did not specify any mouse driver, other than selecting the VBOX Guest Additions.

I went to the testlog link, and it asked me what to do with a DOS/Windows executable. Is this an OS/2 program?

I ran grep -i and here are the results:
[c:\] grep -i mouse config.sys
rem DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\MOUSE.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2Additions\vboxmouse.sys

The AMOUSE.SYS suggestion is excellent and I will try that next. I had already switched to a different mouse, but I forgot to mention that.

Setup & Installation / ArcaOS, VirtualBox, and mouse freezes
« on: December 25, 2021, 06:02:49 pm »
In April, of this year, after many years of running ECS and ArcOS in VirtualBox on Windows, I switched to Redhat on new hardware. Since then random mouse freezes have started occurring in ArcaOS, and although the mouse is no longer in the ArcaOS VM, the rest of the VM is still running fine and can be controlled from the keyboard. This has been happening with two different versions of both VB and ArcaOS. The hardware includes AMD processor and video and two Dell monitors. I keep everything patched and up-to-date, including updating to ArcaOS 5.0.7 this past week.

The ArcaOS Mouse Setup dialog reports that the Mouse Driver is not properly installed, and includes the following Driver Version error message:
Failed to query version info: rc = 22

The only mouse driver specified in CONFIG.SYS is:
DEVICE=C:\OS2Additions\vboxmouse.sys

I folllowed the instructions in the Arca Noae wiki about installing the OS in a virtualbox, with the exception of the Display and Mouse drivers. I assumed that those were for the install process only and that the versions in the VBox Guest Additions would be used for the VM.

Any suggestions?

Applications / Change font size in File Open Container

Is there a way to permanently change the font size in the File Open Container? Using the Font Palette only changes the font size in the  currently open dialog.

Thanks,
Bennie

Seems that what is happening is that without finding sscore.dll, it falls back on UsePollMode() which must have a bug somewhere on our system, possibly in the timer stuff. Someone else mentioned that the Bitwise builds of Firefox didn't have this issue.
Have you tried it with the screensaver installed but not activated? You can nuke the .dssaver directory in %HOME% to return it to a newly installed state. Seems that the VirtualBox environment may make the problem more noticeable. I'll experiment here or perhaps reboot to Linux and use VBox.

Yes, for now, I'll install the screensaver, but leave it disabled. Firefox and Thunderbird work fine, and I'm happy with the solution (and ArcaOS 5.0.6).

Dave,

Subsequent to my posting, I re-installed one more time (with SS). With the freshly loaded system, I started FF and TOP. At the screen saver's idle check point time, FF woke up and started processing, but it did not peg the CPU.

Thanks for working with me on this.

It took a lot of retries selecting various options on the ArcaOS installation, but I've pinned the trouble to the Screen Saver. Since I don't need it, I've gotten into the habit of not installing it. Every time the Screen Saver is not installed, however, Firefox uses 100% CPU. I haven't timed it, but it looks like the high CPU usage kicks in about the time the Screen Saver would. When I install the Screen Saver, Firefox never uses 100% CPU continuously.
