Hi Paul,

as I was able to install ArcaOS on Bare metal named Lenovo T480 I am really happy to report, that your driver 20210414 works perfect with this hardware!

Thanks a lot, very well done!!

I attach the files I was able to get.

If you need more information on this hardware, please let me know!

EDIT: one regression here, as mentioned earlier in this thread: Playing PM123 and having system Sounds enabled does not work correct. When the first time system sound appears while PM123 is playing, there is no Volumecontrol with PM123 anymore.

All the best!

Sigurd

Thanks for the hints! In the end - I tested the USB Stick with the Lenovo Yoga 12 I have and had the same fail - it turned out to be a hardware Problem and I had success!  :D

The long story with pictures will come tomorrow, I just write via Firefox from the T480!

Here the last 5 Pictures:

This evening my first attempt, so far promising but not succesfull.

First I created an ARCOS 5.0.6 USB Stick as described in the Readme.
In addition I copied the files
NMVE.ADD
NVME.SYM
to the Boot directory of the stick (as mentioned in the other Thread here in this Forum about "Installation NVme"

I plugged in the Stick and started.

During Start of the Laptop I pressed F12 and choosed the USB Stick as boot media.

The adventure begins  ;D

On the first picture ( I am still not able to figure out how to place pcitures here in this text )you can see, that it boots from the Stick.

And you can see the first "problem" as well: what I call the "memory hole", it recognizes only 1 of the 32 GB RAM.

The process itself goes well, and so you can see in the second and third picture, that it starts in bare metal, the T480.

On the fourth and fifth picture you can see the Preeboot Options that I left as they are, well done ArcaNoae!

The sixth picture shows the two things I marked (Well switching to German is a "minority change" I would guess ::) ):
- Edit config.sys before boot (i do really appreciate this point! Arca Noae makes it really easy to add drivers this way!)
- Skip hardware validation (this makes it easier for me when Windows i.e. is already installed)

The seventh Picture shows the ongoing boot after I pressed F10.

Picture 8 shows the Editor window that opened almost imediatly, and the Line I added there:
BASEDEV=NVME.ADD /V
I added the /V Switch to be able to see if the driver loads or not

The ninth Pictures proofs, the Driver is loaded! Great!

But then, the installation stops complainig: can not find the ARCAINST.ISO file (see Picture 10).

Picture 11 does proof, that this file is on the stick.

So, what do you suggest, what did go or what did I made wrong?

Stay tuned for more! :D

Hi,

it is time for me to try to shift "Bare Metal Arcaos" to a new level: I am trying to install ArcaOS 5.0.6 from USB Stick on my Thinkpad 25/2. In fact it is a self assembeld Thinkpad T480 in a Thinkpad 25 case. The "originally" Thinkpad 25 was based on a T470 Model, with Intel core i7 7th Generation. As the 8th Generation was such a boost, I decided to modify one on my own, inspired by an internet blog.

I will report here my tries and fails, trials and errors, as well as success, if it may happen. The availability of the NVMe Driver developed by ArcaNoae opended this door.

Thanks a lot for this new tremendous effort, Arca Noae!
And another driver enhancement gives me hope: Paul Smedleys Uniaud driver.

Last year I was able to get ArcaOS to run on this T25/2, but that time I had an AHCI SSD and the sound did not work that time. I already did have ArcaOS to run on the Originally Thinkpad 25, but had to swap the NVMe that time with the AHCI SSD.

Edit: this Installations have all been made by cloning with dfsee, due to the lack of USB 3 drivers at that time.

As I do not want to open and close (assemble and disassemble) the Thinkpad very often - it has some really stupid plastic things, that are easy to break and not to fix, I assembeld it with an 1 TB NVMe Drive, and hoped to see the NVME OS/2 driver to come alive. And here it is. :)

So, this evening I started from scratch.

I really appreciate your hints and tipps and your help!!! Please do not hesitate to write your thoughts and opinions! Well, but it does not make sense to discuss about the reason "WHY I do this" and "That it does make no sense". No chance to persuade ;D me

So, first a brief introduction to the hardware (this Laptop has each and any Top hardware, that was available for the Lenovo T480 generation, I tried to maximize it in every way):

Hardware Specs:

- Thinkpad 25 Palmrest, LCD Cover, Keyboard, Trackpad, Touchpad
- Thinkpad T480 Hardware:
- Intel Core i7-8650 CPU, 4 cores, 4 threads
- 32GB RAM
- Nvidia 150MX Graphic with 2 GB
- Smart Card Reader
- Fingerprint Reader
- Windows Hello camera
- Web Camera
- NFC
- USB 3 and Thunderbolt 3
- SD Card Reader (Full Size)
- Intel LAN (perfect for Intel 1000EB driver from ArcaNoae)
- Intel WLAN
- Fibocom WWAN
- FullHD Screen with Touch Support (!)
- Samsung EVO 970 1TB NVMe
- Two batteries, one swapable

Special BIOS Settings:

- Disable Secure Boot
- Enable Boot Option "Boot both, UEFI and Legacy, Legacy First"

Already installed software:

- Used DFSEE to create the following SSD Layout:
- MBR Mode
- AIRBoot Manager 1.1.4 installed
- Partition 1, Primary, 16GB, for ArcaOS
- Partition 2, Primary, 150GB, Windows 10 64 Pro already installed
- Remaining Space an SSD left free so far

Next Post is about my first attempt to install.

I am wondering wether or not this kernel of PPC Edition does have the 4GB RAM Limit as well, and in addition the "Free RAM" problems.

Hardware / Is it possible? OS/2 for Power PC in Action on Cebit 95?

I am wondering, does this German show from the Cebit 1995 show the OS/2 for Power PC Edition in Action??

Sorry for not mentioning your efforts.
Roderick

Not mine efforts, the efforts of our community here in D A CH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) was what I meant.

Based on the amount of email addreses OS/2 VOICE has collected via Paypal for donations I would say maybe between 5 and 10% of the OS/2 community has donated. The rest download free of charge....
Roderick
I don't do Paypal, paid direct, so be careful with your assumptions.

Its not an assumption sadly. Do you know how much money for BWW came in via OS/2 VOICE for the total QT project ?

http://www.os2voice.org/images/Financial_Report_2019.pdf
2019 25.400,00 Euro we sponsored BWW with.

2020 report is still to be published, but we collected 20.600,00 Euro over 2020.

Effectively VOICE is the pushing locomotive behind collecting funding for BWW.
We gladly help BWW!

Roderick

That makes me wonder, Roderick. I hope you do not count the Donations made by all the attendences,Thomas Müller and me during the OS/2 user Meetings, the collections I started on OS2.Org (the german community) and the money I donated myself as "Donated via OS2VOICE". That would not be true.

I would guess this collections here named "from us" should have bring some amount of 10.000 - 13.000 Euro to bww.

You are not the only locomotion that put a lot of efforts in it, and it is some kind of frustrating and demotivating to read this.

The New Browser is NOT an "OS2VOICE ONLY" Project!

I would say, I personally donated during the last almost 3 1/2 years a fair amount of money, donated some hardware and collected money with Thomas Müller together during our last User Meetings in Cologne (this is NOT fishing for complements).

I may be one of the minority of users whom still use OS/2 instead of ArcaOS (I would and do advise everyone asking me to use ArcaOS) and what makes me thinking about the browser is this:

It is recommended to use the 14.202 Kernel, this Kernel is (for sure for some good reason) permitted only to use in combination with ArcaOS.

The conclusion as for now is for me: The new Browser will not (reliable if at all) run on OS/2 or eComStation Installations. I wonder if in the future the same will happen to a possible NVMe Driver i.e. ArcaNoae has to decide on its own, while having to follow the contract given/made with IBM.

But, will ArcaOS be the only future for OS/2? I am still very happy to use the AN Software Subscription for Drivers to have an up to date Warp 4.52 without ANPM (this is my special vision of using OS/2).

Latest 20211016 works well on my Lenovo S12 Yoga, but still only the lack of some controls.

By the way - i noticed that PM123 Version 1.41 does show covers of the Sounds played, see scond picture upper right corner - nice feature  :)

For the notes:

Sound in WINOS2 does work on my S1 Yoga 12 with the combination of Pauls 20210103 and the winos2-audio-19980501 driver from hobbes.  ;)

You can grab the Beta Driver from here: https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/windows/WinOS2_Audio_19980501.zip

Please follow the included readme to install.

Nice to have sound in WINOS2 as well  :)
