If you can handle running two machines, WeirdX (one version before the newest.. the zip package with the .cmd file) works with Java 1.1.8 and works OK with chrome-based software (I can display Discord chat and a Chrome browser with it). Firefox did not fare well with it. neither did Konsole (xterm worked fine though)

Intriguing! Can you post some screenshots? I'm keen to give this one a shot myself.

Applications / Re: Dos

Not to my knowledge. If I'm not mistaken, the version of DOS on OS/2 (Including ArcaOS) is something from IBM's PCDOS which has been equated to MS DOS 5.0 in function - this is of course ignoring audio and some other outstanding issues. If you are after better DOS functionality, I'd strongly recommend you give DOSBOX a try. Also, from the demos I've seen, it would seem that ArcaOS 5.1 and 5.1.1 will be bringing about improved DOS functionality along with emulated SoundBlaster audio.

May I ask what keyboard you've got in IMG_6067? I have the sudden itch to add one to my legacy workbench.

Looks like its same one I'm typing this on, an IBM Model M :)

Much appreciated Ian, but I'm pretty familiar with the venerable Model M. I was referring to the one in the second image, you can see the top-row of it but not much else to be able to work out what model it specifically is  ;D

I'm glad that you made it back, Chris! A 16-year lapse still isn't a total loss.
I love a good recovery story with a silver-lining like that - especially after learning the hard way how quickly an OS/2 installation can go bad when I started using it as a daily driver in 2018.

Otaku and Weaboo culture has permeated every aspect of life at some point, especially the nerdier parts  ;D

It doesn't surprise me though. A lot of 90s era tech enthusiasts tend to have a passion for manga and anime - and a lot of non-Windows users from that era were also into it.
I'm not sure what actually causes the overlap, I just know that it's there.

"This person" is also active on os2world.com, so he will probably react to your post.

Have you already contacted him through the website you mentioned in your post? He is quite helpful.

That is a solid point, I've gotten services from him previously and was extremely quick to respond and sort me out. For those who were curious: Had some help with driver configuration, as well as the setup of a working audio driver for my Thinkpad T450S.

Neil Waldhauer , sorry to point you out but do you want to weigh in on Jacco's situation?

but can you comment on the stability of vefi.sys as opposed to vsvga.sys?

While doing UEFI testing, I have found that vefi.sys works remarkably well. It actually makes it possible to use DOS/winOS2, on a machine where it won't even start in normal BIOS (CSM) mode. That is, of course, because of the replacement for CSM, that Arca Noae has developed. It probably isn't perfect, but it is much better.

That's great to read! It seems we're well on the way to phasing out the use of DOSBOX as a stop-gap.  Thank you kindly Doug

Hi Roderick,

This might fall under NDA, but can you comment on the stability of vefi.sys as opposed to vsvga.sys?

Hi Martin

Joop's OS/2 site went down shortly after the last post he made on his profile...

Does a thread like this need to exist in a forum like this? Especially in the General Discussion section of all places.

We were very good to suppress excessive discussion of US politics during the 2020 elections, let's do the same again and get back to what this website is actually about.

Hi Dave.

Like a lot of us here, I daily OS/2 on modern hardware for whatever tasks are still possible, so I am in complete agreement with you. In BitWise's defence, switching to a more modern infrastructure would likely be at a cost of much more labour in the short-run.

In spite of that, I'm sure the majority of us can agree it's still a serious necessity given that we're stuck to operating within 32bit memory limitations in a browser-oriented 64bit world. It's just impractical for us to be giving up precious memory in favour of sticking with an outdated and inefficient architecture. 32bit x86 consumer processors (primarily in netbooks) still exist and sell despite increasing resource demands from web browsers and other programs, simply because of how CPU instruction sets can cut down on processing overhead, it feels foolish for us to not take advantage of it.

Despite the possibility of our much loved and anticipated browser releasing sooner as a result of sticking to Netburst, it won't be a lasting success by any stretch if we cannot keep up with these demands in whatever ways we can/should.

Just wanted to toss in my 2 cents here. If you end up going the route of using a travel router, look at the Netgear Nighthawk MR1100. It's a really nifty battery powered setup which I used with my T450S all the time.

Hi Rene

I also have no information or plans about the release of the new Qt5 Browser. I know that Bitwise works keeps updating libraries and news on his website, but I don't know any timeline.

Regards

Things have grinded to halt duo to difference circumstances.  I am working on an update to be published in the month January to tell everybody what the status is.

Roderick

Any idea on when this update will be posted?
