Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS: Impossible to install!
« on: June 01, 2017, 12:17:55 pm »
Hi Pete,

Congratulations that you got that far on an AMD 64 multi core based machine.  On my brand new, never had an operating system installed I couldn't even get it to load the ram disk at the start of the process. The stupid thing is that I can setup a ram disk and load a copy of freedos into it with ease.

As a check I tried it on a single core AMD 64 processor machine that we have in the service department.  4GB ram and a brand new 500 GB hard disk.  Everything appears to go well up yo the first reboot when it reports 'no operating system found', yet I can load our standard WSeB image on to that machine and it boots and runs without problems.

I wish I could help Pete.

Ivan just for information how does the boot process of Arca Noae not work with the ramdrive ?
Any error message ?
From what I understand you say that Freedos can load from ramdrive or you can create a ramdrive.
The ramdrive ArcaOS uses seems to be also Veit Kannegieser his preboot menu code that eCS uses (you can get it from Veit his website). The fact that Freedos works says nothing as to why ArcaOS is failing. As ArcaOS is whole lot more complex that freedos.

As for that boot issue you describe on the AMD 64 system it seems this is classic OS/2 issue that I have seen with OS/2 MCP, WSeB and eCS and you now possibly with ArcaOS. On the AMD 64 system install airboot and see if then boots the system. Its possibly sysinstx from rspinst failing...

You most likely have a single partition setup on that system single core AMD 64 system ?

Hello,
I have problems also with the DVD, only works with the dvd in the boot with the dvd of the arca50.
When I insert the w-xp-dvd, it does not work. For vbox.
Dvd-tools shows me this in log:
>> C:\usr\bin\cdrecord.exe -scanbus

--Pete, printer problems, I test to print with e.exe, and fail, only print the text in one line, but others programs work for me with psprint

Here it works. I suggest you open a ticket (attach the logs!!!! from \var\log\inst_log.zip) https://mantis.arcanoae.com
It seems for some reason http://home.clara.net/orac/files/os2/aspirb10.zip did not get installed.

Hence the error message.

What I am trying to bring across is that the developers we have are already overloaded and you do not know what more emails arrive in there mailbox. And why do you think BWW is asking for sponsorunits ?

You see that is why I asked you, how much money did you pay ? If you look at BWW Silvan runs his own company next to BWW. Herwig runs his own accountancy company with 2 people.
They do this NEXT to running BWW.  Looking how much projects BWW keeps running, imagine the time constraints.

The OS/2 community should *count*  the blessings that people are willing to work on OS/2 projects. Because we have very few developers. And my experience is that they get also private emails with complaints, we do not know how many emails these are and what is written in them.  Especially since most if not all of the software BWW releases is downloaded by most people free of charge,

Now if everybody would be paying for the services of BWW it would be a whole other case, but I do not think that is the case.

514
I read the ticket and I am not going to comment on the discussion itself.

What is however something that I keep hearing in *general* from  developers who write *free* software is that they get or gotten people demanding things. How much did you pay for this software ?

The punch line is that its free software the YUM/RPM software and the team at BWW is not a large software development house like IBM used to be. And they are working on a whole bunch of projects.
I edited this post to add the following:
I organized Warpstock Europe 2017 in Rotterdam and I will soon put there presentation online so you can what they all work on.

What we as a community should rather take into account is how much developers can handle (workload) ? Do you know what they (BWW) receive in there mailbox on more complaints.

Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS5 Another personal Experience
« on: May 21, 2017, 10:58:17 pm »
Hi there,

I thought I would share my experiences too concerning ArcaOS, so here we go, but first off all : Thank you to all those who made this possible.

I have a Lenovo X61 which I used exclusively with ECS (2.2 Beta) and now with ArcaOS.
I made a complete backup of my ECS installation and then wiped the HD, as I intended to avoid any problems with a seocnd OS when installing ArcaOS.
And I must admit, I did not read any of the documents included concerning the installation, I was far too excited.

In the Boot options menue I chose Boot with menu for own values
In the pre-boot configuration program  I chose ACPI /modern hardware, left the panorama driver chosen and changed the mouse driver to smouse (for personal reasons I prefer this driver)
On the page with the drives listed (storage controllers etc) I made no changes, everything was correct.
On the network page the Nulldis-Driver was suggested? The X61 has the intel 4965 wireless card/chip built in so I chose the complementray Genmac, it was not detected automatically, but I was/am not sure if it should be detected. Everything else I left untouched  (no static IP configuration etc.)
On the boot options page I only changed the keyboard layout to german and checked the 'Skip hard disk validation' box.

I saved the changes and the installation proceeded to the graphical installation program.
Here comes the first surprise:  As mentioned above I had changed the keyboard layout to german, but in the graphical program the selection read US layout.
OK, no problem, I changed it again to german, but compared to ECS 2.2 I rememberd the changes having been stored.
I then proceeded and chose the custom installation to be able to choose which components should be installed.

Regarding the display drivers I found out that snap was listed there, it had not been listed in the preeboot menu? ( I prefer snap)
(I did not choose the Win/OS2 installation, only DOS support) and realizing RSJ CD Writer was not included I chose to install the CD/DVD utilities. I did not change any other values.

Concerning the network adapters: As mentioned I had previously chosen to have the Genmac for the Intel 4965 installed, but when the graphcial installtion programm proceeded to the network adapters page and I checked no driver was installed and it did not suggest any driver either, so I presume the Intel 4965 was not detected automatically? I chose it manually and added the protocol too.

Then I proceeded with the installation and some ten minutes later ( more or less) ArcOS booted to the desktop environment :-)

Beautiful and everything seemed to work as expected!
Then I started playing around a bit and proceeded with the configuration.

Snap works well here ( for my needs), better than with ecs 2.2, at least this is my impression. I adjusted the settings concerning colors, resolution etc. THe only thing not working is when selecting 'advanced' on the first page, I rember this used to call the command line tools for snap?

The I proceeded to setup my wireless network:
I am not so happy here with the wireless lan monitor and, as I realized the DHCP client used is the isc dhclient. (On ecs 2.2 I always used the XWLAN 310 which in my case seems to be quicker when establishing a connection?). I might try to switch back, but right now I was able to establish the connection to my wireless network at home, so no big problem at all.

Sound: I installed with my X61 docked to the docking station using the built in optical drive. I had chosen the uniaud driver to be installed.
When booting with the x61 docked the sound works. With the X61 undocked sound did not work and it did not work either with ecs2.2. To be precise : If I connect an external speaker the sound is there but the internal speaker of the X61 does not work.
What I had to do was to call the unimix in the config.sys and pass the correct parameters,  then sound works with the internal speaker too. (Restrictions : The mute knob of the X61 works, the 2 knobs for the volume control do not work)

Printers: This is the most exciting experience with ArcaOS (for me)

I have a Samsung 2165W. With Ecs 2.2 I had tried to install the printer using cups and failed everytime. It was not listed in the supported printers and I tried to work around but failed. So actually I was only playing around a bit when I realized it was listed now when choosing Create Cups Printer and Samsung Printers. So I gave it a try and here I am happily printing!
(I don't know whom to say thank you too personally but I presume Paul Smedley ? and Alexander Taylor?)

Software (just a few comments):
Firefox works well, better than ever before with ECS 2.2, so thumbs up.
DVD Tools/Toys do not work with my  LG USB  DVD Writer? I have not yet looked into this, but according to the log there seems to be a problem with the apsirout... I will check later and I have a valid RSJ CD Writer I can install.
The graphical interface for changing the multimedia installation is missing, I don't know why?

All in all this is a great experience, the system is very fast and responsive and for my needs actually almost perfect!!!!!

There is one point where I cannot not see any improvement yet compared to ECS 2.2 for example and this is power management.
As mentioned I installed with ACPI, this is the only way installation works on my X61. If my battery is fully charged, I have a maximum of 100 minutes left when running on battery. (If I for example boot a life Linux Mint I have about 3 Hours 30 Mins without any extra tuning)
Calling the power object in the System-Setup the performance is always stuck to maximum performance, no possibility to change this.
I know there is the acpid.cfg but the changes available or recommended do not provoke any significant change concerning power consumption.
The FN Keys for example to change the settings of the display do not work either, so I am stuck with a maximum power consumption when running on battery?
Suspend/Resume does not work with the acpi included, it worked with the previous version 3.23.04. Now the system supends but when waking up it goes to a complete reboot.

But once again, thank you too all the people who worked hard on making this possible.

Cheers
Holger

Choosing smouse with SMP might now work correct I have seen traps with this as well. Since its the same SMOUSE.SYS as with eCS....

Just iike with eCS I recommend people to *not* by default switch off the disc checker _unless_ you have issue's.

From what I understand about ACPI from AN is that its not something that is official supported. (Also based on what David mentioned at Warpstocks).

Can you post the log about cdrecord ? (You can open the and copy paste that to the forum).

I also just installed as a test on anther box, works without to many issue's.

Its the same minstall as eCS had in the background.

Type minstall /?

You will need to type minstall /F: and full path to control.scr.

Later you can run stpm.exe to select UNIAUD as the *default* audio card.

Applications / Re: ArcaOS - How to enable SMP
« on: May 18, 2017, 05:38:21 pm »
Anyone knows how to enable SMP mode ?
( selective install has no feature for SMP nor did I found an SMP install option and I bougth ArcaOS to use it in SMP mode ! )

ArcaOS just like eCS (since version 2.0). If you install on bare metal (not in a VM). It will load the SMP kernel and ACPI.PSD by default. Is your equipped with more then 1 CPU core it will enable SMP by ACPI loading...

If SMP does not work tell us how you reached the conclusion SMP did not work. Did you install in a VM ? We can try to help you but please provide sligthly more info.

In theory this can happen with LIBC DLL for example for GCC apps. But if that would happen it would happen as well on eCS when you update the DLLÅ› :-)

Hi Martin, I thought it might be useful to list any apps that we know work / don't work with ArcaOS 5.0? Please move / merge this with another thread if you have already got a similar discussion going recently.

So to start, these work (superficial testing):

  • VisPro/Rexx Gold 3.1.1  (db elements not tested)
  • VX-REXX 2.1d (db elements not tested)
  • Visual Prolog 5.1 Community Edition (I only installed the OS/2 elements)
Lewis from Arca Noae mentioned ArcaOS contains an OS/2 licensed product so I would not see why programs that would run on OS/2 or eCS would not work on ArcaOS. I just downloaded it and installed without a problem.
At the core its OS/2 with the latest fixes from IBM. Just like MCP and the eCS versions.

I guess its save to say all applications will work. If they do not work, report to Arca Noae.

I have a few more apps to install today, will update this list as and when I have done so. Please feel free to add your own findings.

I know all these arguments but when a client asks 'if OS/2 is turning into Linux why don't we just dump it and use Linux?'

I find I need to say something and ask how many other organisations are wondering the same thing.  It could end up with the use of OS/2 becoming smaller not larger as we were hoping.

Dave, I can understand your point about the tools used but from my engineering viewpoint wouldn't it be better to spend the time fixing the tools first?

Ivan,

If people ask if OS/2 is turning into Linux. What is the definition of "turning into Linux"  ?

I do not know who these organizations that ask these questions you raise Ivan.  I also guess you can not disclose this. What I mean is if you mean organizations these are companies you provide consultancy services for that use OS/2 ? If these organizations and people have certain exceptions they are not very well known. I know BWW is still asking for extra funding...

As for native discussion and what makes OS/2 OS/2 ?!

* For years the GCC compiler and LIBC libraries have been the life line for OS/2 to get new software (Is LIBC native !?). Years ago this was started by innotek because the old IBM compilers no longer supported the new C++ dialects used in Mozilla (any of the experts, is that correct ?). Every OS/2 users has tons of GCC compiled on OS/2 system.
Few OS/2 users asked if we could not have a "native" OS/2 browser (what ever you could call native).

* Heck the last versions of Lotus Smartsuite to a large extend used OPEN32. Is that "native" ?
(Heck it used the system.dat user.dat).  Nobody raised the point that running Lotus Smartsuite on OS/2 you could just as well run Windows.

* The Java version from Goldencode was the last Java version that was compiled for OS/2 with something like ODIN in between.  Plenty of people used the Java ODIN versions  and never asked "well is OS/2 not turning into Windows" ?

* I just do not get it why the directory structure that the RPM/GCC applications bring to OS/2 make it "more of being" a Linux distribution then when using GCC apps. Also then we do have an RPM format for packages.

I guess you get the gist of my points. What is native OS/2 ? Since 2000 the amount of resources IBM allocated to OS/2 have been reduced. And to be honest I think its miracle we still can boot OS/2 in the current shape we have it now in conjunction with all drivers we have. Considering how many contribute...

Having been to Warpstock US 2014 in Witchita Kansas. I organized most of the Warpstock Europe events in the last 5 years alone. You know what the primary reason was why people wanted to dump OS/2 ?
Because their web browser, they did not know how to update it properly.  And so websites could not load and they and had put Linux  next to OS/2 or migrated.

In the grand scheme of things I think that is what people who do not like RPM should consider. Yes its true maybe the community could have created a "native" package (and reinvent the wheel). Maybe come up with a new software update framework. But with our limited human resources, why reinvent the wheel ?

Is RPM perfect ? Well maybe its not. But for developers it reduces the time they need to spend and makes live easier for a lot of people to update software.

To be honest I think a portion of the OS/2 are just way to conservative to accept change.   And its rather fear of the unknown...
My guess is that in about 1 year RPM/YUM will be accepted by most developers and most people will find it easy to just hit the update button and download an install all packages with a push of the button...

My conclusion OS/2 being  "native OS/2" basically ended when circa 2000 when IBM stopped updating compilers.
Heck you could say we no longer have a native compiler ? I am just trying to point out this discussion about what is native and that OS/2 is no longer OS/2 etc is somewhat of strange discussion.

We now have Open Watcom compiler and the GCC compiler and I think we should count our blessings how much software and drivers we have.  The developers developing for OS/2 have to make chooses. And if people expect differently then I guess somebody should put a bag of money on the counter to develop an alternative for RPM for example.

Anyway more news will follow on Warpstock Euroep 2017 for people who are interested. See www.warpstock.eu for details.  The amount of visitors has been rising over the last 2 years so lets see what happens.

Hello everyone
I'm thinking of changing my dvd recorders to bluray ones. My question is if the CD / DVD Toys is capable of recording bluray disks of 50 gigas (BD-R DL)

I guess you need to ask eCo software. On the website they do write:
CD/DVD Toys is a set of utilities to burn CD and DVD disks (Blu-Ray, HD-DVD).
You can download a trial version here:

Hi Aaron. Welcome to the forum.

I don't remember to have seen any USB Wifi netword apdater that worked on OS/2, but everybody is welcome to report one.

It can be interesting to know the hardwareID of the device you are using to have some hints of what chipset does it uses, but I don't have registered any USB wifi device that works.

If someone has one that works please let me know to regiter it on the wiki.

Regards

Your right Martin as far as I can remember there has never been any Wifi USB supported chipsets on OS/2.
There is are two USB ethernet drivers for OS/2, but that is it (I think). Unless I missed something.

I found this other program:
http://r6.ca/MMAudioPak/

but when I want to link to this page:
http://www.os2world.com/cdwriting/mmclasses/mmclassesmain.htm

this site show the home page www.os2world.com

???

Before install this program and after it, I can not resize the window in the program :
C:\MMOS2\DLL\UNIMIXPM.EXE only show the master play volumen.

saludos

If you mean you want to download the CWMM classes from Chris Wohlgemuth they have been part of eCS 1.2R and higher. So there no need to install them, they are integrated in MMOS/2.

Setup & Installation / Re: Thinkpad T540p and eCS
« on: September 26, 2016, 10:47:30 pm »

try change settings in BIOS setup,
* Security Boot = disable
* UEFI = disable, activate Legacy
* USB =  use USB 3.0 as USB 2.0

Hmmm I don't think this is a UEFI issue or a USB setup issue at its hanging on the OS2LVM.DMD.
Since with UEFI or safe boot switched on INT 13 is gone (not compatibility support).

What version of the OS2AHCI driver are you loading 1.32 (just be certain).
The fact its hanging on OS2LVM.DMD could indicated something rare in the partition layout that OS2LVM hangs on.
But this is rare!!!
The other issue could be an issue reading the disc duo something not going oke with the OS2AHCI driver.
But its all speculation. A reading meaning OS2LVM.DMD can not read the disc via the OS2AHCI.ADD driver.
