Web applications / Re: browsers shutting down
« on: February 12, 2021, 11:06:19 am »
Hi David, I guess you are using the NSPR4 and NSS packages from Netlabs-exp. This is a known issue with those versions. Its a weird problem that we can't figure out, especially since the browser just vanishes without a trace.
Fix is to downgrade those packages, not easy and needs to be done on the cmd line (unless the newer ANPM has fixes for downgrading multiple packages).
Another fix, that I haven't tested, but should work would be to have the Netlabs-rel versions of those packages in the programs directory or elsewhere and use BEGINLIBPATH and LIBPATHSTRICT to make sure you are loading the older versions.
Hi Dave,
I'm using the firefox that came installed with arcaos 5.06, and then I installed seamonkey-2.42.en-US.os2-i686-15112020.zip (following the yum package requirements in the text file for seamonkey) as well as libvpx-legacy-4.
Not sure if doing those changes would have installed those exp packages or not.

I was planning to reinstall my arcaos installation anyways so I will be curious to know if it happens with just firefox on a plain install.. IE is it something i'm doing while installing seamonkey.

Internet / Re: CPU requirements for the new otter browser.
« on: February 12, 2021, 10:52:37 am »
Memory might be the most important with perhaps a 2GB requirement just guessing. You'll have to test, it's how we basically figured out the minimum requirements for Mozilla and there are people running Mozilla carefully on PII's.
I'd also guess that if they get it running in multi-process mode, there will be a switch or such (the Simple Browser seems to use an environment variable) to put it in single process mode which should require less CPU.
Is there a C2D Xeon that would plug into that board?
The current cpu I have is a dual core at 3ghz (Xeon E3110).. so it probably will be ok for now.
I looked up the motherboard cpu support list and apparently my board can take a C2D 4 core cpu - so perhaps I will upgrade to that at some point when i'm ready for a new project. I'm assuming another 2 cores would help a lot.
I was mostly just curious about the pentium 4 question.. as I previously used to have a pentium 4 machine.
Amazing that people are still using PII's ::)

Web applications / browsers shutting down
« on: February 09, 2021, 09:03:09 am »
When running both seamonkey 2.42.9 and firefox 45.9, they both crash and shut down fairly regularly when browsing. (the browser just shuts down and the task disappears from the task-bar.)
Restarting the program and all is normal again - but it's fairly annoying.

I'm just wondering if that is normal these days for other people too, or is there something about my setup that is not right?

Yep that's correct. Just email them after you purchase that and they will send you the license info.

General Discussion / Re: Revolutionary PC Technology
« on: January 29, 2021, 11:11:48 am »

So the revolution of the PC is that it drove down the cost of software but it made it almost impossible for a software company to stay in business for more than a decade.
There is a picture in the article below about an auto shop in Poland that still uses a Commodore 64 with specialty driveshaft balancing software.
I'm sure the company that developed the software is long gone.
I would say that auto shop sure did get a return on investment, lol.
Have to wonder how long the C64 will keep working.

It all takes time from an expert though and gets harder when and if you have to juggle parts into our limited address space.
Thanks for the explanation - I had no idea how involved it was :).
And thanks for the work of all the experts making it happen.

Internet / CPU requirements for the new otter browser.
« on: January 29, 2021, 10:28:35 am »
Regarding this update about the otter browser currently being beta tested:
https://www.os2world.com/cms/index.php/past-news/80-news/software/22907-new-web-browser-for-arcaos-ecs-and-os-2

It mentions it probably won't function on a pentium 4 - and would benefit from a dual core.
I curently run ArcaOS on a dual core Pentium Xeon E3110:
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/34694/intel-xeon-processor-e3110-6m-cache-3-00-ghz-1333-mhz-fsb.html

Does it seem like that should have enough power?
Thanks!

You would just need to buy two sponsor units from os2voice.org. You can read about it here-
http://pmmail.os2voice.org/index.php?title=PMMail_for_OS/2

And you can buy the sponsor units here:

Hope that helps :).

Yeah, One of my teachers in school as a child would always tell me "Patience Is a Virtue".
They did in fact email it later.. for the record in case anyone else wonders later.

Setup & Installation / Re: Problem with SNAP resulution
« on: January 09, 2021, 11:31:19 am »
I have found a very simple workaround for my ArcaOS 5.0.6 problem where 1600x1200 is used instead of 1920x1200: I have simply installed an elder SNAP version from here:
https://ecsoft2.org/scitech-snap-graphics

and all works fine!
I only had to press a lot of times "YES" because old files have to be copied over newer files.

Your problem is a documented issue with SNAP (that I recently had to deal with myself) - that ArcaOS is not fully installing snap and you need to finish it.
From the documentation:

Also note that on some systems when installing SNAP during an ArcaOS install, there may be an issue
setting the resolution and/or using the Advanced button. On systems with this issue, you must
reinstall SNAP after the ArcaOS installation has finished.

Open a command window, change directory to
\CID\SERVER\SNAP on your install media and type

  setup SNAP

Your fix will work too but if you want to have the arcaos version of snap then just run the above.

Hardware / 64k vs 16million colors
« on: January 09, 2021, 09:40:38 am »
My snap install by default was set to 64k colors, but 16m is an option.
But i'm not sure if i'm imagining it but surfing seemed slower when I changed to that.
Anyways, should I leave it at 64k , or would you switch to the higher rating?

Hardware / Re: Snap Vs Panorama - Refresh rate problem.
« on: January 09, 2021, 09:28:57 am »
Well just to give an update for other people with the same problem - this is a known bug that snap doesn't fully install on some systems:

Also note that on some systems when installing SNAP during an ArcaOS install, there may be an issue
setting the resolution and/or using the Advanced button. On systems with this issue, you must
reinstall SNAP after the ArcaOS installation has finished. Open a command window, change directory to
\CID\SERVER\SNAP on your install media and type

  setup SNAP

So that installed the latest snap fully and resolved the refresh rate issue. You have to say yes several times to overwriting the files.

My ArcaOS support person seemed pretty annoyed at me since I missed the above in the help documents & i didn't check the already like 5 other tickets with the same problem.. opps. ???

But apparently i'm not the only ArcaOS users using crt monitors lol!

Applications / Re: ArcaOS Yum updates question
« on: January 09, 2021, 09:18:43 am »
Hi David

For ArcaOS updates you need to download the ISO and run the update procedure by booting the ISO file (DVD or USB Flash).
Ah, thanks for explaining how it works. That makes sense :).

Applications / Getting the OpenOffice download link
« on: January 09, 2021, 09:14:39 am »
I just ordered the developmental unit for openoffice and got an order email.
But I didn't receive the actual link. Does anyone know if that is manually sent by someone or it should have been automatic?

General Discussion / Re: Revolutionary PC Technology
« on: January 09, 2021, 07:02:41 am »
Mac OS X (2001) was a different thing based on FreeBSD ("independent implementation" they call it) and I think with some time and patches MacOS X became more stable than MacOS 9 was.  Steve Jobs (and his team) now had a new line of iMacs selling good to the youngsters, a new OS (based in "unix") and market presence. He did save Apple at that time. In 2007 with the iPhone he took Apple where it is today.  On 1997 Apple was a niche dog for graphic design that investor thought  the only path for it was "going down", now it is monopoly

I bought an ibook when os x first came out and it was a good system. I really stopped liking Apple because of how they locked everything to their garden with the iphone, and how they lead the charge in the industry by making "locked down" phones that are difficult to repair. I liked Samsung when they still made replaceable battery phones for example but they followed Apple's lead and now hardly any phones are being made with replaceable batteries. And yes I know, they are waterproof - a great feature if you are a professional scuba diver.
Lost all affection for the company since their iphone. So much for "thinking different".. they are thinking exactly like any other corporate monopoly that abuses their power. The irony is that was the first time some people started liking Apple.
