Hi Paul

Not sure what is going wrong but unzipping cups-2.0.3-os2-20150728.zip to a temp directory and then running a couple of dir commands provides some figures

[G:\OS2\TEMP\CUPS]dir * /s > dir.txt

gives a files total of 863

[G:\OS2\TEMP\CUPS]DIR * /A:R /S > attrib.txt

Counts files with ReadOnly set and gives a files total of 634 files

Can I suggest that just prior to zipping you run the following from the root directory of the package - in this case \cups

ATTRIB -R * /S

That should get rid of all ReadOnly attributes - here the attrib command seems to need uppercase (as above - not sure if that is just this system) as using lowercase failed.

Hi Paul

Just to confirm no testprint problem with cups-2.0.3-os2-20150727.zip and also to confirm Daves finding that a lot of files - around 70% -  are marked ReadOnly.

Hi David

Yes, found the cockup at my end and testprint (from cups-filters) prints fine.

Hi David

The testprint file that you posted is the file from cups v2.0.0; the version from 2.0.3 looks like this

#CUPS-BANNER
Show printer-name printer-info printer-location printer-make-and-model printer-driver-name printer-driver-version paper-size imageable-area
Header Printer Test Page
Footer Printer Test Page
Notice CUPS 2.0.3.
Image images/cups.png
Image images/color-wheel.png

The #CUPS-BANNER header seems to be the problem: either the testprint file is wrong or something is not quite right with cups as it cannot work with this file.

Something I noticed during updating to 2.0.3 is the amount of cups files marked as ReadOnly - I think that may include testprint. You may also want to check other files were updated rather than silently failing due to ReadOnly file attributes.

Hi All

Anyone else having problems printing the cups 2.0.3 test page?

The cups interface reports:-

     Unsupported format "application/vnd.cups-banner".

The log shows:-

D [25/Jul/2015:18:51:38 +0000] [Job ???] Auto-typing file...
I [25/Jul/2015:18:51:38 +0000] [Job ???] Request file type is application/vnd.cups-banner.
D [25/Jul/2015:18:51:38 +0000] Print-Job client-error-document-format-not-supported: Unsupported format "application/vnd.cups-banner".
E [25/Jul/2015:18:51:38 +0000] [Client 8] Returning IPP client-error-document-format-not-supported for Print-Job (ipp://localhost:631/printers/MG7550) from localhost

A few lines further down I see:-

D [25/Jul/2015:18:51:38 +0000] [CGI] cgiSetVariable: MESSAGE="Unable to print test page"
D [25/Jul/2015:18:51:38 +0000] [CGI] cgiSetVariable: ERROR="Unsupported format "application/vnd.cups-banner"."

Is the problem an incorrect cups v2.0.3 testprint file or something missing/not-quite-right in cups/cups-filters?

If I replace the cups 2.0.3 testprint file with the cups 2.0.0 version the test page prints fine.

Pete

Hi Paul

Found a little time to briefly test v2.0.3

I found the problem you experienced and it seems to be caused by the cups v2.0.3 build of \cups\share\cups\data\testprint - or some code in cups that interprets that file - as using the cups v2.0.0 build of testprint works fine.  I'll email you with some detail later.

Have not used v2.0.3 enough to find any other bugs so far - will let you know if/when I do  :-)

I guess we ought to "unhijack" this discussion.

Apologies to all for going off topic.

Hi Greggory

While a brief presentation about 1.4.8 would be of interest I think Paul should concentrate more on 2.0.0 as that is the way forward - I see cups 2.0.3 is now current.

No, Paul, that is not a hint - but if you are feeling bored sometime... ;-)

Hi Joachim

USB keyboards and mice/trackballs that have onboard PS/2 logic will work fine with a passive adapter;  USB keyboards and mice that do not have onboard PS/2 logic need an active (powered) adapter.

However, if the problem you have found is caused by pmmerge.dll the connectivity method does not matter at all...

Hi Joachim

A possible test for Dougs theory:-

Boot to a command line. If that works OK - and the keyboard functions - try to start pmshell from the command line.

If the keyboard does not function try a different brand of keyboard - might be worth checking that all USB drivers involved are installed correctly first.

Sometimes devices "designed for Windows" need to install software when installed in Windows due to a non-standard implementation of the USB device. Unlikely, but could that be the case with this keyboard?

My personal view on USB keyboards is that they are very useful and I have been using them for years - plugged into a PS/2 adapter and then into the PS/2 keyboard port :-)

Hi Dave

I do not think that NT was originally designed to run OS/2 so much as M$ needed to make sure that they did not lose customers that they had sold M$ OS/2 1.1/1.2/1.3 to so an OS/2 1.3 subsystem was built into NT. However, I will not argue that NT is more "OS/2 like than linux", although I seem to recall reading that NT design owes more to DEC VMS than it does to DOS or OS/2.

It would be interesting to see a "ReactOS/2" but, as we are all aware, there is a lack of people with the skill set, ability and time necessary to do the job within my lifetime - not to mention funding what could be a large, expensive project.

I guess the only answer is to win a huge amount of lucre in a lottery and employ a horde of Russian and Chinese programmers  ;-)

Setup & Installation / Re: Samsung ML-2165W Printer
« on: July 13, 2015, 02:12:37 am »
Hi Holger

Looking at the ml2160 ppd file included with the linux driver package -  http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfile/ContentsFile.aspx?CDSite=UNI_UK&CttFileID=5768603&CDCttType=DR&ModelType=N&ModelName=ML-2165W&VPath=DR/201407/20140710101817219/ULD_V1.00.27.04.tar.gz - I see this line:-

*cupsFilter:  "application/vnd.cups-raster 0 rastertospl"

That seems to suggest that you would need something else, probably the Splix package, to get the printer working with ecups. I do not see the ml-2165 listed in the current build of Splix - ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/ecups/install/splix-2_0_0.wpi - so agree with klipps suggestion to contact Paul to see if support will happen in the near future.

Hi Martin

I just unzipped the kernel files, os2krnl*.___, fromxrc006 as I do not remember 14.106 being available back then.

Here is what I see after unpacking the W4 kernel:-

[S:\BACKUPS\G\DOWNLOAD.ECS\XR_C006\FIX\OS2.5]unpack os2krnl.___
os2krnl.___
- OS2KRNL
       0 file(s) copied.
       1 file(s) unpacked.

[S:\BACKUPS\G\DOWNLOAD.ECS\XR_C006\FIX\OS2.5]bldlevel os2krnl
Build Level Display Facility Version 6.12.675 Sep 25 2001
(C) Copyright IBM Corporation 1993-2001
Signature:       @#IBM:14.105#@_W4  IBM OS/2 Kernel
Vendor:          IBM
Revision:        14.105
File Version:    14.105
Description:     _W4  IBM OS/2 Kernel

[S:\BACKUPS\G\DOWNLOAD.ECS\XR_C006\FIX\OS2.5]

The smp and uni kernels are also reported as build 14.105

Looks like it was kernel 14.105 supplied with xrc006 - at least for eCS users.

I did notice that the readme gives the xrc006 fixpack a buildlevel of 14.106 - could that be causing confusion?

Hi klipp

Starting from the bottom and working back up your list:-

When creating a cups printer using the cups browser interface you select Make and Model. During this procedure you should get offered a choice of 2 printer drivers eg:-

HP Business Inkjet 2250 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.10(en)
HP Business Inkjet 2250 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.10 Simplified (en)

The "Simplified" version seems to work best for adding to pscript.drv or psprint.drv

However, if the PPD file is supplied in the hplip package I have no idea if the above applies...

If I remember correctly the Generic Postscript driver is a "Printer" included in pscript.drv; I suspect that it is also in psprint.drv

I guess you are a little stuck with trying to remember the arcane enchantments used to get pin.exe to do anything useful  :-)

Well, I have some news for you: More than pin.exe is required.

For a pretty good set of prepared instructions that work get the psprint.drv package from http://www.altsan.org/os2/printing and read the Readme - especially the section called:-
 Importing PPD Files

I certainly cannot improve on those instructions - and, as mentioned previously, you may want to give this postscript driver a try at some point as it works well and cures problems printing from OpenOffice v4 here.

With regard to hplip: I have never installed or used this software so cannot offer any specific setup advice. Hopefully all will be fairly straightforward.

I think that to use any PPD file included with hplip you would need to click the "Browse" button during cups printer Creation/Modification to navigate to the directory with the PPD files in. Then select your desired PPD file.

Hope the above is of help

Pete

« on: July 02, 2015, 12:39:36 am »
Hi klipp

I do not think that cups is finding 2 printers:-

They look identical, but when you click on them the connection is different:
USB:/HP/HP%20Color%20LaserJet%20CP2025dn?serial=00CNGS467706
socket://192.168.1.140

What it looks like it is finding is 2 *Connections* - Did you have it USB and (W)LAN connected?

The cups test page seems to be designed to confuse people: There is only 1 page so why cups often reports "Processing page 2..." I do not know.

Have you installed the current hplip software? If not I will take a guess that printing failed when using the 2025.ppd because hplip is required - but I could be wrong.

With regard to selecting the printer PPD file: Make sure you select the version with "Simplified" in the filename as these tend to work better with pscript.drv and, in my limited experience, with psprint.drv from Alex.

Are you using pscript.drv? - If "Yes" maybe you want to try adding the PPD file to psprint.drv instead - see http://www.altsan.org/os2/printing - and create your Desktop printer in the hope that will "cure" some problems printing from OS/2 apps. If you try this work through the instructions in the Readme carefully.

As for your remark "Looks like Pete is right (as usual)!" I will let you argue that with my wife who has a slightly different opinion  ;-)

Pete
