Title: Dooble: Websites / WebApps Testing
Post by: Martin Iturbide on April 25, 2022, 02:17:42 pm
Hi.

I would like to hear your feedback on the working and non working sites and web apps with the Dooble browser.

The Dooble browser for the moment is this version: dooble-2022.04.04-1.oc00.pentium4.rpm (http://rpm.netlabs.org/experimental/00/i386/pentium4/dooble-2022.04.04-1.oc00.pentium4.rpm)

It is on the netlabs exp RPM: "yum install dooble"

You can also post bug reports at: https://github.com/bitwiseworks/dooble-os2 (https://github.com/bitwiseworks/dooble-os2)

Regards

Several pages load. On Os2world it will not save my login or even login. You tube does not work for me at all. there seems to be no way to set bookmarks. But there is potential here I will note.

Hi Eugene,

You can 'bookmark' pages by clicking on the star at the left of the URL at the top of the page. This adds the page to the list accessed by clicking the black star at the top to the right. A mystery why you can't log in to OS2World... no problem here, I'm typing this post in Dooble.

I have to log in each time I start the browser here. I also had a crash when trying to upload a file. I'll try again in this thread.
Lots of ads and stuff I'm not used to seeing also.

Uploading a file worked in single process mode but crashed in multi-process mode. I guess not worth filing a bug as I believe only single-process mode is supported.

Trying to open a file (File-> Open file), always results in "Your file was not found".

How does one use a search engine (Google)? I found a place to configure search engines, but I don't see any way to use them.

 Doug,

Far as I can tell, if you hilite text on a page, then right click on the hilited text, you get a context menu at the bottom of which is 'Search selected text', click on that and you see the list of search engines selected under 'Tools -> Search engines...'. Otherwise I guess you need to add search engines to your favorites list. EDIT: only the one at the top of the context menu list actually works...

Can't load files here either - probably should file a bug on that one. EDIT: looks like it was reported as #7 under qtwebengine-os2.

Regards,

Hi
You need to go to
1 edit
2 settings
3 go to privacy tab
4 set there a password
5 save it
6 restart Dooble
7 open file then authenticate
8 then fill in pass after this all should be saved.

Happy browsing

That does work, but it is an extra step, that should not be necessary, I went to duckduckgo, com, and set it as a favorite. Not a great solution, but it works.

What are you trying to do here? I did that, and all of my saved Favorites went away, and then it seems that new Favorites were not saved. I turned that off again, and now no Favorites are saved.

I think there is a HUGE learning curve here, and it is difficult to separate user error from program faults.

The authentication thing does work here. You have to re-authenticate every time you start the browser and can only save favorites or history after authenticating.

I set it on, and I see no way to authenticate. It was working, more or less, before l messed with that. Now, it isn't working well. Seems like one of those features that causes more trouble than it prevents.

Does spell check work for anyone? Maybe I missed a setting.

In Settings-> Web, under Spell Chackers, it seems that you need to select a language. I don't think it is working though.

I am going to Reset the settings, and start over.

Hmmm. Now the Delete key isn't working. I need to use the Backspace key. The cursor is also flickering. That stops when I move the cursor outside of the Dooble window.

Hi

The "Open File" and "Select File" looks weird. It does not shows all the folders and files of the HDD.

Can you please confirm how do you see the "File - Open File" ?

I see similar. Workaround is to start at the default of HOME and press the up arrow, then everything seems to get populated. Does take a second or 2 to display.
This also allows selecting a file but the file never loads here with an error about file not found eventually.

If you want to change the language that the browser uses: download the language that you want from

https://github.com/textbrowser/dooble/blob/master/Translations

and store it in \usr\bin\translations (might have to create that translations subdirectory).

made rpm installation on a virtualbox vm machine (Warp4.52), after also made some test with the zip file version posted by Dave on a different vm machine.
The result with this last installation is worst than the zip file version, which at least worked for limited case of pagesites even if mostly unstable.

Here the executable not even starts, with the error message: "The system could not demando load the application's segment. QT5WEBC->LIBCX0._shmem_close is in error. For additional detailed information type: HELP SYS127

Hi

I tried Jitsi, a web open source conferencing tool.
https://meet.jit.si/ (https://meet.jit.si/)
We don't have audio and video support (yet?), it shows the video feed from another machine, but after a while it crash.
The action icons also don't show.

Hi

Testing Youtube here:
- https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4pjffCdj7wRBQfyneCN8kETgFesTSEy2 (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4pjffCdj7wRBQfyneCN8kETgFesTSEy2)
I'm testing this on a ArcaOS 5.0.7 VM and I'm not sure how much multimedia can be pushed on a VM.
For the moment it works, but I noticed that Audio get's slightly slower, Alex Taylor sounds in a lower pitch :)
Sometimes the video keeps going, but the audio stops, if I drag something on the desktop to play the dragging sound the audio wakes up.

Then I switched to youtube.com/live , but I get choppy video there.

But my short test didn't break the browser, but video and audio are not stable, but a good start. I will try it on real hardware later.

It takes some time to load, but the album sharing page is usable.

You need a newer libcx. Looking, I have the i686 version, 0.7.2.-1 installed so I guess no shmem. Bitwise seems to have used the newest Pentium 4 version. Update libc too.

Downloaded the exp rpm and followed instructions.  It WORKS!!  I can run a lot of sites I couldn't do on FF and so far it's only crashed on the Wall St Journal.   It would be nice if the install instructions mentioned exactly how & which files should/could be loaded high.
But overall it's great for Arca users and I am so happy now  :) :) :)

updated libcx to the available P4 version.  libc showed no update, and was already at the latest P4 version.
The main result is that now I cannot use ANPM anymore, it crashes just after started when searching for database package list.
Have to restore the previous vm picture,  just made before this attempt.

ADDENDUM: now just reinstalled everything back (dooble + libcx update) on the restored  previous vm version.   ANPM seems to work, while running dooble this is the new error message "....QT5WEBC ->ICUUC.__ZN3icu6Locale14forLanguageTagENS_11StringPieceER10UE is in error. For additional detalied informations type...."

I installed, from netlabs-rel. Install was good, and it didn't need many additional packages. I do need to change the font settings (as described elsewhere). I am pretty pleased with Dooble, but it is more like Alpha level software.

The Delete key, and the Insert key are completely ignored. Spell check doesn't seem to work.

Favorites only has 4 lines, and I haven't found a place to increase that (top to bottom, of the window, would be good). It would be nice if the Favorites window would automatically close after a selection is made.

I have avoided the Authentication stuff, so far, and it is working reasonably well.

Things like the logon for the OS2WORLD web site, need to be entered at every access to the site, which is somewhat annoying, although it isn't always needed. I expect that that is some sort of cookie thing.

I would like to import my Firefox bookmarks. I exported them to a HTML file, but Dooble File-> Open file doesn't work, so I haven't found a way to get into it.

Search is not intuitive. To get to the search window, you need to highlight something in a web page, then RMB to get the popup menu, then select Search selected text (and that doesn't always work). I use DUCKDUCKGO for searching. I went to duckduckgo.com, and added that page to my Favorites. It can be set as the home page, but then you need to see their advertizing (not a real problem).

I  am seeing some letters missing, at the top of: https://www.theweathernetwork.com/ca (https://www.theweathernetwork.com/ca). This could have something to do with font selection, but it is the only page, so far, where I see it.

Is there a way to stop videos from playing when I open a web page? I find that to be very annoying.

Dooble does work with my bank, which is good.

More later...

You need to update your icuuc.dll (included in package libicu) to the latest version (68.1.1)

But at the location of the language files is also a file README that says:

"The Translations directory must reside in the directory which houses the Dooble
executable.

The environment variable DOOBLE_TRANSLATIONS_PATH may also be used. The variable
should be set to the absolute path of the Translations directory."

And the directory for the Dooble executable is \usr\bin ...

You could try using \usr\share as the location for the translations subdirectory and have DOOBLE_TRANSLATIONS_PATH point to that.

Well, that's a curious location for translation files. Common place such files would be /usr/share.

Hi Doug, the Weather network page looks fine here besides a white square where perhaps an auto playing video should be. Busy page too. I usually use Environment Canada's weather page.
Luckily my bank and Credit Union work fine with SeaMonkey and my Credit Union has worked with Mozilla since about version 1, it was the last site I needed Netscape for :)
For auto-playing videos, guess a host file is one of our only choices currently, I use Steven Black's and need to update it, worked with,
Code: [Select]
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/hosts

Perhaps need to check with Lewis how well Privoxy is working now and figure out how to use a proxy with Dooble, probably an environmental variable.

Add to that: Pressing the Caps Lock key, causes the cursor to go the beginning of the current line (as well as turning on Caps Lock). There seems to be some serious problems with keyboard support.

Thanks, Tom, but I already knew this ;-)
Still, it's a curious location on a Unix based system. On my Mac, I had to put things in the same place, which you normally wouldn't do.
I think, this stems from the Windows portable feature.
Still, it would be nice, if the application would test for the standard os paths.

Hi Martin, they both sorta work here. Booting something small does succeed, booting OS/2 on halfix-demo crashed the operating system. Mouse is weird on Win95 and Win3.1 with v86 but once I figured it out, I played solitaire on Win3.1.
One problem is the JavaScript engine sometimes seems to stall. Another is likely memory and why OS/2 crashed my computer.
Also tested the export to png thing, it seems to have worked.
Edit: Seems to only have captured the bottom half of the browser window.
