Applications / Suggestions on how to recover the eCS MBR.
« on: July 06, 2014, 02:51:17 am »
Hi

I have eCS 2.1 with Windows 8.1 dual boot on a machine. Installed eCS and Windows later. Windows brokes the eCS boot, but with EasyBCD I used to have no problems with Windows boot loader helping to dual boot both OS. But lately Windows broke the eCS  MBR and the Windows boot loader does not work to boot eComStation.

What do you recommend to recover the eCS MBR? I tried booting the eCS CD in maintenance mode, changing the "startable partition", rebuilding the LVM partion tables and using "Rewwrite MBR" option, but it does not work, Windows boot loader keeps loading first on the boot. I have two "Primary" partitions, the first one for eCS, the second one for Win8.1.

General Discussion / EDM/2 - What is next?
« on: June 24, 2014, 03:04:26 pm »
For the last year I had been updated the EDM/2 with all OS/2 development related articles I was able find on the Internet. I even got permission from IBM to republish old articles.

I want to discuss what do you think it should be next for EDM/2. Following the "OS/2 Development" material for that site I think the suggestion will be to improve this areas:
- OS/2 API - The OS/2 API Project
- The Config.sys Documentation Project
- Get OS/2 development books on the open (this can be tricky because sometimes the authors given exclusivity to the publishers).

Please remember that I do not own EDM/2, all contents are Creative Commons, and it is hosted on Netlabs. So it does not mean I'm the administrator or the one that takes decisions. I'm just a collaborator, just like anybody else can jump into it to help. Plus remember that I appreciate all kind of help to have more open/public contents on this platform.

What do you think?

Hardware / Testing GenMAC with Unsupported drivers
« on: June 16, 2014, 05:43:12 pm »
Hi.

I wanted to test some network drivers with the Windows driver and GenMac on eCS 2.1.  I want to write an article about it on the OS2World Wiki, but sadly I don't have a successful case to share. I can share my try with a NIC that I can not make it work.

For the moment I'm trying a “D-Link DWA-525 Wireless N 150 Desktop” PCI card which is a RALink 5360 HardwareID: 1814x5360

Can anybody help me out? Can you check my openoffice article (attached on this post) and let me know if I'm doing the procedure in a right way? Maybe I'm missing some important step.

Thank in advance

Hi

I will like to know if someone is interested in helping me with an OS/2-eCS Supported Hardware site based on OS2World Wiki.  I know that someones are in favor and other against a Wiki, but that is all I got to have a collaborative way to create a "Supported" hardware list for this platform.

I got Jonas Buys permission to republish his site contents on the OS2World Wiki and reposting his content very slowly. So, I need a little hand with this.

The Wiki is here: http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Hardware

I'm organizing it in a different way:
- The first column (Computers, Hardware Devices and Adapters) are lists (tables) of the supported devices. On that list each device can have its own wiki page link if it is necessary.
- On the second column, on Drivers, I want to have a list (tables) of the device drivers for each category.
- On the second column, on Tools, There are links to the Tools descriptions
- On the third column In want to link the general information that used to have the OS2Warp.be site.

You can access OS2Warp.be on the archive.

Let me know if there is interest about improving this Wiki area. Currently I'm not discussing to have an alternative to a Wiki because I can not create a "database site" and I want all the documentation to be Creative Commons, but help is welcome.

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / OS2World Layout
« on: June 03, 2014, 02:54:56 pm »
Yesterday I noticed that Google Alerts was sending me updated OS/2 related news (finally) based on OS2world news.

But I noticed it came out from a site called. http://www.ecomstation.ca/. I think it is cool that site is using the RSS feeds for his site and he most be doing something better than I, since he is showing on "Google Alerts", but that is not the point.

Looking at that site I started to think if changing the OS2World layout to something similar to that site or Slashdot, will be useful or not. I generally like the layout of this site as it is right now since I can post full, long software announcement and that will not be annoying on the main page, since everybody can just click on the news he likes to expand it. Or trying a new layout like the ones used on slashdot which shows you the news contents in one shot, but I think that the kind of news we have here are different from the rest.

So, what do you think? A new layout? Do you read all the OS2World news completely, of you just like to click on ones that you think are interesting?

As reported by Phoronix, the Haiku operating system "has added (untested) support for the newest AMD Radeon graphics cards to its open-source driver for the BeOS-compatible operating system." (Specifically, that support is for the "Mullins" and "Hawaii" graphics processors.) Impressive that this project keeps the BeOS flag raised and continues to modernize; Haiku has been around since 2001 — years longer than Be, Inc. itself lasted.

Just checking out other Open Source OS projects progress.   :'(

Programming / Animated Mouse Pointer - Need Development Help
« on: April 25, 2014, 11:08:01 pm »
Hi

I talked to the author of "Animated Mouse Pointer" and he gave me the source code of this program. He wants to release it as Open Source under the Apache license, but he gave me the condition that to be released a new build has to be created with the new license.

I need someone that can help me to compile Animated Mouse Pointer and release a new version binary, so all the package, binaries and source code can be released.

I really need help with this. Since it is taking me forever to understand how to compile this software.

Article Discussions / Happy Birthday OS2World - 14 years online
« on: March 28, 2014, 03:28:33 pm »
I want to thank you all, OS2World is not just a server with scripts and OS/2 content. It is not just a couple of guys that update the scripts and post the news.

OS2World is "you" !! OS2World is all the people that read the news, collaborate on the forum, keep porting software to OS/2 and wants to keep using OS/2 and eComStation no matter how hard the times get.

Thanks to you all.  Let's keep fighting and let's keep collaborating. Collaboration is what had kept us 14 years online, collaboration is what is allowing us to use this platform today.

General Discussion / Microsoft OS/2 - 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2
« on: March 09, 2014, 06:28:11 pm »
Hi

I wanted to recover some OS/2 old history by trying to collect evidence of the existence of some of the older OS/2 versions.

According to some conversation I had been told that Microsoft OS/2 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 was released in in several OEM versions. At that time Microsoft didn't have an standard packaged product called OS/2 and offered a customized (maybe some driver) version of each OEM. That stopped on MS OS/2  version 1.3 when it was a standard retail product. (according to what I know).

I only have some photographic evidence that existed (thanks to ebay mostly):
* MS OS/2 1.0 - AST Technologies
* MS OS/2 1.0 - Tandy
* MS OS/2 1.0 - MaynStream
* MS OS/2 1.21 - MaynStreamToshiba
(Pictures are on the Gallery)

But I had been told that also exists
* OS/2 1.0 for Epson
* Compaq versions
* HP versions.
* OS/2 1.1 for Olivetti
* OS/2 1.1 for Nokia
...and possible others.

If anybody has any pictures, images, or something about the existance of this editions, or other that I'm missing please let me know.

Please let me know. I will really like to preserve this knowledge, picture, files and disk images.

General Discussion / The Gallery is Back !!
« on: March 05, 2014, 02:14:51 pm »
Hi.

I wanted to make the OS2World Gallery to return, but I didn't have way to make it fast and easy, until yesterday.

I had made an easy way to post the pictures on a Google+ Page and show them on OS2World with a simple, fast and open Joomla Script I found.

You can visit the Gallery here: http://www.os2world.com/gallery . You are all free to visit it and check out the pictures.

The pictures and albums are on the OS/2 Warp Google+ Page. So if you have a Google account you can also share them and leave some comments on it.

By the way "I WANT MORE", so if you want me to add something to the gallery, your screenshots, community pictures, events, fun stuff... all related to OS/2, send it to me or post it here.

Hardware / Two Sound Cards on OS/2-eCS
« on: March 03, 2014, 02:48:42 pm »
Hi.

I was wondering, How does OS/2-eCS manage two sound cards on the same system?

How do you know which one has to sound?
If both are installed with a working driver, does the two make the same sound? or is it a way to configure which sound output to use?

I ask this because today almost every new mainboard comes with two sound cards (or what it looks like two sound cards).  One of the regular sound card (with ports in the front and other in the back) and other that is the HDMI sound out port.

Just for example Windows has a way to manage the output/input sound ports, which is not very practical, but has something.

Utilities / Flash 0.4.2 - 24.02.2014.
« on: February 25, 2014, 05:47:37 pm »
Hi.

There is a new version of Flash (0.4.2) released by bitwise works.  It should be available on the Mensys site, but I can not find where to download it from.
http://svn.ecomstation.nl/flash10

I had checked 1)Mensys.nl site (Xeu.com BV Mensys B.V. Software Subscription Services for eComStation (valid for 12 months)) and eComStation betazone, but it is not available on any of those sites..

If anybody knows about it or where to get it, please let me know to make the announcement on OS2World.

Regards.
