General Discussion / Re: Happy Birthday OS/2
« on: June 20, 2017, 12:17:47 am »
Hi

I didn't know OS/2 1.0 was released on December 1987.  It is good to save the date.

So, which day should we throw the party ?  :) :)

Setup & Installation / Re: Lenovo ThinkCentre M93 Tiny
« on: June 20, 2017, 12:11:57 am »
Hi John.

It is a little hard to tell, in my experience the practical way is to get the machine and do some testing and recognize the components/chipsets that it has.

This is my personal option and it may change according to the machine configuration.

According to the article it has "Intel Core i5-4570T". So OS/2, ArcaOS or eComStation should boot with the ACPI driver, if the BIOS has an UEFI legacy mode on it.
- Intel HD Graphics 4600, should work with Panorama or SNAP
- Intel Centrino-N 105 Wi-Fi card (Mini PCIe)- I don't think it will work yet.

I'm not sure if it comes with wired ethernet and what sound chipset does it has.

If you have the exact model you get some more hardware info details on the Lenovo PSREF Book:

Hi.

If you mean "IBM VisualAge for Basic for OS/2", yes I know it exists.

If it is "Microsoft Visual Basic for OS/2" I had never see it. EDM/2 page says it was a version of OS/2 but I have never see it.

Screenshots of both tools will be appreciated to be posted on the wiki.

Setup & Installation / Re: USB support in original CP2 CD

Hi

As far as I know the original driver worked.  The ones that Lar's made are updated and supported (by Lars) but it is good to know what device you want to use. Remember that only USB 1.1 and 2.0 is supported, we still do not have any kind of 3.x support.

Hi

Just in case I created a txt file and push it into a test repo to see if it works. I pushed it via Command line.

[C:\projects\Gittest\Warp-WPS-GUI_Tests]git push https://github.com/martiniturbide/Warp-WPS-GUI_Tests.git

It worked fine and pushed "example.txt" on https://github.com/martiniturbide/Warp-WPS-GUI_Tests.

Hi Jochen.

Some time ago I wrote (with collaboration of more people) this article:
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Using_Git_under_eComStation

There are two similar errors I got with git, but when I was cloning. Check the "Errors" part of the article to see if it can give you some hint.

Utilities / Re: Battery charge
« on: June 05, 2017, 06:06:08 pm »
Hi Holger

That is an interesting feature request. It is called "Battery Charge Threshold" in some other platforms.  The idea is to help you preserve the health of the battery by making it discharge and charge according to selected limits.

For example here it is the one that cames on "Lenovo Settings" for Thinkpads. (see attachment).

Thanks Paul.

That's a very interesting port. I wonder which other library dependencies does the pcap library has.
Is this one? http://www.tcpdump.org/#latest-releases

Applications / Re: IBM's Windows 95 Emulator
« on: June 02, 2017, 10:36:22 pm »
Hi.

For what I known (maybe it is just a personal opinion), IBM's Lou Gerstner pulled the plug on OS/2 even before Warp 4 was released. While many people was exited about Warp 4 release, some other with internal information knew that OS/2 was not going to get more investment. (remember that at that time there was not Facebook or twitter :) . So anyone inside IBM that wanted to do something more aggressive with the OS was stopped. WSfeB, Warp 4.52 and Server 4.52 was only to continue the legacy support and to support a migration path to Java apps.

I had seen that business strategy many times, instead of going to announce the abrupt discontinuation of a software product, they minimize the dev team to only offer support, do not offer any new innovation on the product, offer only bug fixing and patches, and wait until the market just fall off so at that moment they can announce the discontinuation without a bigger impact. If by some miracle the market react in a different way, maybe the product can revive, but that is not the common path.

Hi Daniel

I remember that we discussed that picture long time ago on IRC when everybody just wanted to be able to run Win95 on OS/2. Since I never saw any binaries of it, I consider that picture as fake.

If anybody has the binaries of this "emulator" we can finally put this urban legend to rest :)

Storage / Re: HPFS and JFS internal definition specifications
« on: June 02, 2017, 06:50:11 pm »
Hi Rick.

My suggestions about file systems are the one that I posted.  If I will have to put those (HPFS, Boot JFS and ZFS) on priority order, it looks more interesting ZFS to me, since HPFS has MS patents on it and JFS is close source but AN is supporting it. ZFS can be focused on being an alternative for the future OS/2 file system.

But while there are people saying "don't reinvent the wheel" I say "reinvent the wheel if it is not open source". Close source software is future abandonware to me, even if it works fine today. (Already discussed on the past how open source software reduce the risk to be left "high and dry")

Gordon Letwin, according to wikipedia, is a guy that made millions with Microsoft, so I found it a little bit hard to contact him to request HPFS source code, his OS/2 book, or any other things related to OS/2 to be turn open source/public domain. He seems to be more focused on environmental activism. But I had never tried to contact him.  Interesting historic post by Gordon Letwin, by the way.

If I can choose a priority outside the "File Systems" the priority should be to start cloning more deep components of OS/2 like the CPI API  (possible more based on libc library) and a PM/GPI clone (also with more close dependencies to libc instead of CPI). It will require developers with a good understanding of the CPI API, PM API and LIBC. But since I don't do development and do not have money for an army of developers, this is only "sweet sweet drunk talk" for the moment.

Hi

I restored the original fig5 and fig6 from the original source on the HPFS article. I don't what if the optimized images got list or maybe never was finished. I will check on that.

Hi Rick

If you have interest on developing a file system for OS/2-ArcaOS I may suggest the following ideas.

1) HPFS. Even that we have an HPFS file system driver, there is no open source implementation of it. You may get some information of HPFS also at the EDM/2.

2) Bootable JFS: Even that we already have that available, it is not open source. It is based on IBM's DDK source code which can not be open to the public and non-open source compatible. Maybe evolving the JFS open source project so it can boot can be an interesting project.

3) ZFS : I hear that ZFS is an interesting file system format and there is the OpenZFS project. Maybe ZFS can be an interesting alternative to HPFS and JFS to boot OS/2 from that.

Just some thoughts.

Regards
