Networking / Re: Samba Shares - default CAPS in filenames?
« on: January 22, 2022, 09:24:00 pm »
If it didn't do that before something must have changed.  My three NAS boxes save all file names that I put on them in the case I gave them no matter what operating system I do it with, OS/2, ArcaOS, Linux Mint and even my Samsung tablet.

I think you need to look at what you sent to the NAS when this happened, it should give you some idea of what might have happened.  Some character in a filename maybe.;

One thing you might be able to try - install what you need on another computer, use DFSee to make an image then write that image to the disk from the laptop  then see if it runs.

I had to do that with my Acer Aspire 9300 to get OS/2 installed.  I did the same with a TravelMate 4050 I was given that didn't have a hard disk.

Thanks everyone, the fun should start monday if the parts all arrive.

The biggest problem was finding an AMD Ryzen based m/b that has 6 SATA ports, hard disks not a problem and I found a combination unit (slimline DVD and 3.5" hd draw) which makes using a case I have easy.

Thanks Dave.

The problem with Airboot is the moment it tries to start all I get is a moving notice from the monitor that it can't display the required resolution and I have to wait for Airboot to time out to get the default OS running - apparently it doesn't like the Ryzen built in graphics for some reason.

I did a wipe of the hard disk I tried it on and then got the KVM switch and an extra computer to run the other OS.,

Setup & Installation / Quick question about boot manager
« on: January 07, 2022, 09:02:19 pm »
I want to setup a replacement computer system with multiple operating systems on it.

I have learned that the boot manager that comes with ArcaOS is useless on any of my AMD Ryzen based systems - it does not display any of the menus so it is impossible to select an OS.

Before I start this project I would like to know if anyone is using the old OS/2 boot manager in such a situation.  I know the primary partition limitations and since I only want three operating systems on this new system (Boot Manager, OS/2(ArcaOS), Linux Mint and Win7).  There will be several hard disks - the number will depend on how well the system will work.

The reason for this is because I am fedup with having 5 or more computers running at the same time all feeding into a KVM switch and two monitors, also on a HHDMI switch.

Any information and comments?  Thanks in advance.

Looking at this with my Project Engineers hat on it appears the real BIG problem is that we don't have a Qt5 runtime environment, like we have for Qt4, that all the Qt5 programs are run against.  At the moment we have a mish mash of bits of Qt5 that seem to change with the weather - not a way for getting Qt5 programs to run reliably because one program might run but another requires a changed part of the Qt5 environment to run so the program that once ran now stops running.

Setup & Installation / Re: VirtualBox and ArcaOS 5.0.7

Hi Dave,

I have to agree with you about 64 bitness - all my Ryzen systems are 64 bit units.  So it seems that for any form of OS/2 to go forward we need to convert it to 64 bit.

Not being a programmer I don't know what that would involve but I think the dumping of the 16 bit programs wouldn't be missed by most people.

These comments are interesting but the big question is will we ever get a VBox that actually works using ArcaOS as the host, by that I mean one that does not require fiddling with to get things like USB, large screen monitors, etc working.

Storage / Re: Sharing drive between OS/2 and linux
« on: December 14, 2021, 11:25:52 pm »
A lot depends on how you expect to share that drive.  are OS/2 and Linux running on the same computer or separate computers?  If separate computers are they running at the same time and if so how do you connect the drive to both computers?

Also what type od data are you sharing?  I have 2 OS/2 computers, 2 ArcaOS computers and 4 Linux computers that can all share everything on 2 NAS boxes which allows backup as well as file sharing.

You need to define what you want to do, once you know that how to do it will be obvious.  Give us details of your setup and we should be able to give you advice.

Hi Martin,

For some strange reason the site doesn't like the zip file ( over 2Mb ).  I will see about uploading it to somewhere else for download.

The official site for sigil is and the source can be downloaded from github.

Way back in 2010 Paul did a port of Sigil e-pub editor for QT4.  It is a bit long in the tooth but still works for simple production of e-pub books, just dont expect any smart features.

I don't know if it is still up on Paul's site but I don't think so.  If you want a copy let me know and I will post the zip I have here.

You could try WIN95KEY from hobbes.  Be aware you have to be able to read the keycode.

Hi Martin,

I know you mentioned the netlabs-exp repository but looking at what is there there is no QT5 mentioned.  I was able to find QT5 5.15.2 mentioned in the regular pentium 4 repository.

The main question, since there is no definitive QT5 runtime package available - which of the 44 QT5 packages do we need to download to get a working QT5 runtime?

Just out of curiosity may I ask a question?  Has anyone been able to get sound to work through an HDMI port and link to a monitor?

I ask this because all of my computing equipment now has an HDMI port on the motherboard as well as all the monitors, only used at the moment for video.
