ivan, everyone...

...If it won't do those things I will continue using Dave's Firefox ESR 38.8.0 on OS/2 or the Linux Firefox ESR via my KVM switch.

Here is what's been eating away at me: the funding drive, while generally a great and just effort, seems to be single handedly relying on us, the OS/2 end-users to cover the costs. So where are the big-fish of our platform in all of this? Does anyone know? Have those kind of conversations taken place and have any results been arrived at?

If you want to talk full-disclosure, well, let's "talk the talk, and walk the walk"...much easier to raise additional funds if we all understand the full playing field!

Hello Dariusz,

From my perspective nothing has changest since about 2012 when Bitwise Works was founded. A lot of funding
came from the community. Like with QT 4.68 at the time as Netlabs project a lot of people contributed to the
community.

When it comes to "big fish" you mean large companies ? In the 10 years I worked at Mensys on eCS (from about 2002 until 2013) not
a single large customer demanded browser support.

So for me the fund raising is not that much different as it has been over the last 10 years.

I will try to answer to the best of abiilities your questions.

For your first question download the Otter Browser on Windows or Linux. Its effecitvely the same browser as on ArcaOS.
https://otter-browser.org/ most of the functions should be the same on ArcaOS.

As for your second question I do not know.

Your third question ? Are you referring to the QT testbrowser that was distributed and mentioned by other people ?

As I mentioned this this working towards a first public beta. That is what the focus is on.
Otter was selected as the browser has been under development for a longer time already.
And while we try with this browser to satisfy as many users as possible, we can not make everybody happy.

The small group of beta testers indeed reported that websites that you could
no longer access on OS/2, now work again. And that is the primary goal of this project make as many websites accesiable again
on OS/2 and ArcaOS.

Thanks,

Roderick Klein

Hello,

The new Otter Browser has been tested by a small group of people.
The most important issues are now being fixed to provide a stable browser experience. Current expectation is that first *public* beta of Otter Browser will be released in the last week of February or the first week of March.

Installation of the new Otter Browser will only be supported via ANPM (Arca Noae Package Manager). When the public beta of the Otter Browser is released we will also release the instructions how to install the Otter Browser.

We need your donations to keep going, please consider making a donation via https://donation.os2voice.org

Please visit https://articles.os2voice.org , at the bottom of the Browser update 13 you can find 2 questions. Could you please fill in these two questions about your browser experience
on OS/2, eCS and ArcaOS ? Thank you!

In this newsletter you can also read why the Browser update newsletter have not been released over the last couple of months.

We also explain how the browser will distributed when
the beta cycle is finished.

You can also read how Steven Levine views the new Otter Browser.

Applications / Re: LIBC panic errors anyone?

Maybe they are simply not equivalent. What I read somewhere is that BWW recommends to switch over to "Pentium4" architecture in general (even updating already installed packages if possible).
And as much as I can tell, they stopped producing "i686" versions of their RPMs for everything that is new.

That is correct.

Setup & Installation / Re: eCS hangs on boot loading OS2DASD.DMD
« on: January 28, 2022, 07:59:01 pm »
Did you modify something on the disc layout, add or removed a partition ?

The hang on OS2DASD.DMD can be caused by a problem switching from the miniFSD to the IFS driver used on the boot volume.

What is however more likely is that the partition is damaged. Boot from install media and run from an OS/2 command line:

chkdsk bootdrive: /f and let the chkdsk run.

Hi Rene

I also have no information or plans about the release of the new Qt5 Browser. I know that Bitwise works keeps updating libraries and news on his website, but I don't know any timeline.

Regards

Things have grinded to halt duo to difference circumstances.  I am working on an update to be published in the month January to tell everybody what the status is.

Roderick

Any idea on when this update will be posted?
Month January and January has not ended yet :-)
But seriously its being worked on. A draft is being reviewed by Dmitry from BWW and Steve Levine before publication.
It might be slightly later then the end of month January before the update about the Otter Browser is published.
Keep an eye on https://articles.os2voice.org

I can reveal that current status is that the Otter Browser is moving forward again.
OS/2 VOICE ran out of funding to pay BWW, however we where able to collect some funds together.
In the coming month the browser should become a lot more stable, that is what is at least the current estimate.

In one tests the browser stayed up for about an hour. And as other people with QT Simplebrowser have experienced, more websites that no longer work on our platform, work again.  This has also been reported by our beta testers.

Hardware / Re: Hardware Compatibility Wishlist for 2022

I have another one: Support up to 4 GB RAM for the system with addition of Physical Address Extension.

Maybe the os/4 team can comment.
My technicall estimate to get this in current os/2 kernel.
Well not going happen...

Roderick

OS/4 uses PSE-36 for quite a long. But for ram drive only.
To use PSE-36 or PAE for general propose memory   requires   totally  rewrite kernel component "Pager" and all PDD at least.  So "Well not going happen... (ะก)".

Thanks for the technical clarification.

Discussed in this forum before plenty of times. Maybe the os/4 team can comment.

Putting in this support will require big big changes.

- 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express.

Best I can tell this requires no special support. If somebody has such a chipset is not supported open a ticket at Arca Noae if you have such a chipset,
https://www.arcanoae.com/wiki/multimac/

"These drivers exist and are included in the MultiMac distribution because someone needed them and requested a driver.  MultiMac drivers are typically very easy to create. If you have a specific network adapter that is not supported by an existing MultiMac driver and you need a driver for it, please open a ticket and request a new driver. Make sure you attach a TestLog log file to your ticket."

Hi

Just trying to organize the ideas without any order or weights we have:

- Audio and Camera support for a Videoconference tool.
- Bluetooth support for Keyboard and Mouse.
- GPT support for large disks.
- 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express.
- Intel Wifi support.
- Dual Screen Support
   - Intel HD dual screen support. (To mirror screen or extend screen)
   - Easier Hot plug to projectors. (To mirror screen or extend screen)

I think I would like to add to the list:
- Hibernate support for PCs  / Laptops.

Regards

That large hard disc support with GPT is already working. See the readme file of the AHCI driver of Arca Noae.
http://trac.netlabs.org/ahci/browser/trunk/src/os2ahci/ReadMe.txt
Added support for 48/64 bit LBA operations.

But it seems you need the GPT filter driver for this to work which is included in ArcaOS 5.1.0. beta.

I also think WiFi would be a high priority. Both WiFi and dual screen have been mentioned by Arca Noae on their roadmap.

To this would add GPT support for large disks.

Saludos

ArcaOS 5.1.0. already has large GPT disc support in conjunction UEFI support.
But this is of course not yet released.  See the Warpstock Europe video's for more information.

« on: January 14, 2022, 08:54:27 pm »
Taje out the ACPI.PSD from yoru config.sys or add /VW switch and see if this fixes hanhg.
The hang is most likely occuring with the witch over from the MINIFSD code to the IFS code.

Hardware / Re: New ArcaOS USB driver and Floppy drive
« on: January 10, 2022, 10:17:44 pm »
I ran into a problem. USB drive of floppy disks does not reread the floppy disk when accessing the disk. In the 16-bit version, everything works successfully.
What can be done to solve the problem?

Are you using the AN USB drivers or the Lars his USB drivers ?
