General Discussion / Re: Hobbes Retirement
« on: January 28, 2024, 05:41:57 pm »
Hobbes was running fine for decades so it was a surprise that there was still a contact in recent times to the NMSU and that Martin could start the reorganization.
Like others already pointed out the cause for the shutdown is most likely because of a retirement in the staff. It would be nice when they could share the scripts and config of the server to have the same user experience in the future just on a different URL with includes the hobbes name.
The current os2site is not a hobbes mirror and has different file set and structure.

LAN works quite well via USB LAN Adapter with Moschip Chipset and USB A/ USB C Adapter.
what device is this in detail? From the picture one can see that the vendor is delock.

Testlog without /A:1 and latest uniaud. Booting with /A:1 gave me a Trap in XWPDAEMON now. Have to look later.

Meanwhile getting closer to Warp 4.
the first log show that it could find the correct codec ALC287 the later one only has the HDMI audio. There is an error logged:
Error: invalid number of PCM instances for adapter 1

Here we have a generational difference  ;D I think the Warp 4 logo is more cool.
I also think that the design and logo of Warp4 look a way better.

We do have an old MesaGL which, even using software rendering, works fairly well. Unluckily as Roderick says, manpower.
SDL is another library that would benefit.
Doesn't SNAP had OpenGL software rendering included? The OpenGL feature level might not be the same to have at least the OpenGL ES compatibility. On the other hand Vulkan is the replacement for OpenGL today.

Off Topic discussions / Re: John Poole Software Operating System/5?
« on: September 01, 2023, 10:08:18 pm »
OS/5 is a Shareware PC operating system based on a Microsoft programming language that itself was rarely used. Intended to be an inexpensive, lightweight alternative to Windows, OS/2, and other graphical user interfaces, OS/5's Desktop runs in text mode while retaining many GUI features.

For sure its not an operating system, even if the name suggests that. And its also no alternative to OS/2 :) Its a GUI that runs on top of DOS, but even back in the days there was something better out there like Geoworks, it requires more mem of course as it was a real graphics GUI not text mode.

Utilities / Re: DUMPFS setup

Strangely SATA SSD's work fine.
SATA uses the ahci protocol and pcie ssd mostly use nvme.

@OS4User
Does os4dump work in uefi mode?

I will check Dmitry from Bitwise Works. But I seem to recall the Falkon browser would even be more work, because we need yet another library and would take more time to port.

The reason is simple: Falkon (as opposed to its predecessor Qupzilla) is KDE based. So, besides Qt, it also requires a recent version of KDE Framework (KF5) to build. It is a huge project and it is a very complex task to port it it to OS/2.
There is an option to build a qt based version without the additional KDE dependencies. In case the KF5 build system/framework needs to be ported as well its too much work, true.

7
What was the reason why the Otter Browser was chosen in first place? The Qupzilla/Falkon browser is more frequently updated and has a larger user base. It has the same requirement for a current QT framework.

Setup & Installation / Re: Warp 4.52 Install Issue
« on: February 15, 2022, 08:14:10 am »
The usual thing is to slow the system down if possible in the BIOS, disable cache and such. Also make sure that the OS/2 memory setting (forget the exact term) thing is off.
You mean the >64MB DRAM detection helper for pre Warp4 releases? Its the last line in the screenshot.

@Martin
Did he try to install from CD? Either the installer can't load a module or program according to the message or the installer is not happy with the env.

Yeah I would think it would show two adapters - I'll take a look at the log and see if there are any clues....

here it shows 2 adapter, the monitor is connected with dislayport cable. however no hdmi/dp sound nor onboard sound.

Internet / Re: Simple Browser revisited.
« on: January 09, 2022, 03:00:20 pm »
thanks for the hint, the reason was an older NSS.

could you please explain the details? I would try to resurvive the simplebrowser installation which actually opens the GUI but then remains mostly inoperable

I just updated NSS from 3.23.0 to 3.47.0. That did fix the startup crash here. Is there a known mechanism in rpm how to have different version of one dll installed that is required be different apps?

Now Firefox doesnt work anymore but simplebrowser works.
Once it chrashed in pmmerge.dll and a reboot was required.

after all pakages + dll necessary installation for simplebrowser, my Firefox did not start anymore, also posted in this thread, It returned working again after having installed libvpx-legacy-4 by ANPM

Funny thing is that after installing libvpx-legacy-4 firefox works again,  thanks  ;)  Can somebody tell if audio playback works in simplebrowser?

Yes, qt.io seems to be down quite a bit, it is currently not loading for me.
Try doing CTRL-T to open a new tab and enter https://google.com. If you get the rendering error, just click the try again.
This is a really basic browser so you have to enter the whole address, not just google.com, but https://google.com, and if a site needs www, you have to enter it to.
Glad it came up for you.

Here the browser starts then tries to load a page and simply quits with 2 beeps, so its living only for 4secs. Nothing in the logs and it makes no difference what URL is given.

Hi Dave,

This 0103 version works perfectly on my desktop machine (HDA: ALC887-VD): boots, proper sound, 9 controls in PMUnimix, no hesitations, appears in the hardware manager. I'll keep using this one and let you know if anything comes up - thanks again! Hope to soon see your bust in the OS/2 hall of fame!

Glad it works for you! Your comment about the hall of fame gave me a giggle - to be honest - I'm just glad people appreciate my work. The comments (and of course the occasional sponsorship that helps pay for new gadgets) are truly appreciated.

Big thanks for recent working updates for uniaud, as it was somehow stated that the code base what we had was not usable anymore and needs a complete replacement. Good that the core updates are in place now.

Internet / Re: Seamonkey and PGP

Because of dropping the old legacy plugin interface like firefox in favour of web extentions the thunderbird team ported the enigmail add on which is now part of thunderbird (V68+) itself, because the author didnt want to port it himself and without it no PGP support.
