Networking / Re: Updated Samba Client
« on: July 14, 2024, 01:16:03 am »
 Hi Steven,

Thanks for the process dump guidance - it turns out smbd is not the problem...

I originally installed SAMBA using the last Netlabs SAMBA WPI and it worked well. This has a utility - 'Simple SAMBA Configuration Center' that allows to update the basic SAMBA files from a zip file and I have done that with every drop from Paul up to now.

To start SAMBA, the Netlabs 'smb.cmd' file starts smbd, nmbd, and winbindd from the Startup folder.

After the latest drop, after the server froze, rebooted then renamed smb.cmd from the <alt>F1 menu command prompt. Then followed your instructions to capture a process dump, but there was no hang, and no file captured. Clients (OS/2 and Windows) could browse the share.

Then started nmbd from another command prompt, and again there was no hang. Clients could browse.

Then started winbindd from another command prompt and the server froze.

So it appears winbindd is the culprit here...

Couldn't get to CADH - no mouse or keyboard input was working. I have some more time today, so I'll try again and see if I can get it to work. If not, I'll try to get a dump.

Hey Paul,

Something seriously wrong with this one - soon as I start the server the computer freezes solid. Have to hit the reset switch (or turn it off). No POPUPLOG, no exceptq trap reports or anything left behind as a clue. Had to boot to a AOS DVD and delete from there, then re-install your last drop of 4.19.7 (which works well)...

Thanks Paul! Both seem to be working as well as 4.19.4 here so far. No NET RPC as you mention. I'll give them a more thorough workout after work and let you know if any issue arises...

Went back to 4.19.4 because WINBINDD wouldn't start with 4.19.5 (but you said it was because of attempts to fix the RPC issue), but smbd did run and work at least...

I wonder why... were there a lot of changes from 4.19.4?

Hardware / Re: Modern Motherboards - Whats working

Figured out the problem with unzipping a previous install over a VirtualBox install - the file 'C:\OS2\svgadata.pmi' must be deleted after unzipping. It is apparently used by Panorama and messes up VirtualBox if it is present. The VirtualBox additions install does not delete it. Now I can run a full screen OS/2 session in VirtualBox at native resolution.

Fingers crossed! Thanks for keeping us updated on your progress Paul.

Hi Martin,

I did follow that procedure after the initial install and it worked. After unzipping my previous ArcaOS install, it did not. I'm pretty sure there is a file or setting in a file that got overwritten by the unzip. Just have to figure out what it is. I'll probably install another ArcaOS virtual machine and start studying the difference between the fresh install and my unzipped previous one.

Got the absolute latest pci-ids file  and re-ran testlog - attached. Still some unknown devices though. Also noticed testlog complains about hyperthreading, but it is turned off in BIOS - strange..

PS - almost forgot - sound works, but the NIC is not recognized (a Realtek 2.5GB). I installed an Intel 1GB PCIe NIC just for this situation.

Interesting this came up - I just got a new Gigabyte B760M DS3H MoBo to use with an i5-12600K processor. to replace my old B365M w/i3-8100 system. Was going to dual boot Windows 11 and ArcaOS 5.1 and was able to install everything and it 'works', but ArcaOS only sees 860MB of memory even though 16GB is installed. No amount of BIOS tweaking would change that, so I decided to do what I hoped would never have to be done, and that is install VirtualBox in Windows and run ArcaOS from there.

Installed ArcaOS 5.1 in VirtualBox and got it working. Normally, I would then zip up my previous install from the old computer, and unzip over the new install on the new computer, boot it, and change whatever drivers needed changing (usually just the NIC). This also 'worked' except I now only have one choice of screen resolution, and that is 640x480x16, even though the original install had more. Tried re-installing the VirtualBox additions from the ArcaOS iso, but no help. Also tried running the ArcaOS install again, but no change.

I am assuming some file was changed needed for VirtualBox when I unzipped my previous install over the new VirtualBox install - anyone know what file that might be? Or how to get back the screen resolutions installed originally?

EDIT: added testlog  booted to new hardware.

Yep - putting en_US.bdic in the root of the %UNIXROOT% drive solves the error. Thanks for the tip...

At one point Paul changed the names of DLL's to avoid duplicates, so any version of Dooble for QT6  before that won't work now. Try Dave's new one (above) - it seems to work well.

Sorry to hear this Martin - Chuck was a big booster of OS/2. Thanks for letting us know.

Thanks Dave! Working good here, also with new block list. One thing I notice with this one I didn't see before: at 'Settings'->'Web'-> 'Spell Checkers' there is a warning: 'en_US.bdic cannot be accessed!'. That file is available in the 'qtwebengine_dictionaries' directory and it worked with the 12/25/2023 version. Does it need to be updated or something?

I've tried all of the files in the \examples folders, here is what I found:

In the \dbus, \multimedia, and \multimediawidgets folders nothing works. Stuff in the \multimedia folders says this platform is not supported. Stuff in the \dbus folders says to start the dbus. I have dbus installed, but don't know what to do to actually start it - any hints?

 \designer\worldclockbuilder doesn't work - gives an error.

\help\contextsensitivehelp - works, but blank and SQL error in console

\quick - all work, but any with sub-folders need the 'shared' folder moved into the same folder as the executable. Then the 'qmldir' file there needs the 'optional plugin xxx' line added with the name of the DLL there. Once that is done they all work, but some (mostly in \particles, \scenegraph, and \shapes directories) have display elements missing and console shows libpng warnings. Does QT6 use the system libpng?

 \widgets\desktop - system tray doesn't work and can't take a screen shot.

One thing I noticed in the '\QML\QT5Compat\GraphicalEffects' folder - the qmldir file does not have an 'optional plugins xxx' line with the dll name. That dll name is also the same as the one in the 'private' subfolder, where the qmldir file there also has no 'optional plugins xxx' line. I added them and renamed the dll in the 'private' directory. Haven't come accross any other DLL name conflicts yet.

Another small issue - some examples that work give a POPUPLOG on exit. Mostly in the \Charts\QMLCharts directory but a few others too. They all look very similar - I'll upload the POPUPLOG.

That's it - as far as I can tell everything else works. This is the best QT6 version yet - much better than the last one! Thanks again! Can't wait for a new webengine...
