Title: USB Scanners and ArcaOS
Post by: Martin Iturbide on January 04, 2021, 02:21:30 am
Hi

Does anybody has some good experience with USB scanner under ArcaOS?
If so, Can you please let me know which scanner, drivers, tricks and software are you using?

I want to give it a try some USB scanners that I have around .

Regards

Sane should be a good option - iirc Epson and canon are pretty well supported.

Hi Martin

I had a Canon LiDE20 working with sane and Tame/2 (sane 1.0.27 seems to be the package I was using). This was a while back but I think the scanner used the plustek.conf file and setup within Tame/2 was fairly automatic.

HP scanners should work as long as the scanner model is listed in the models.dat file supplied with the hplip package and HPscan provides a basic frontend that works with the required hpaio: uri  - https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/?dir=%2F&stype=all&sort=type_name&search=hpscan

Using Paul Smedley's SANE v1.0.27 build from 21st March 2019.
And
USBRESMG.SYS (5th June 2006)
Signature:       @#Froloff&Son:1.6#@  OS/2 USB Resource Manager
  Vendor:          Froloff&Son
  Revision:        1.06
  File Version:    1.6

with matching USBCALLS.DLL (5th June 2006).

I've never been able to get SANE working with the latest versions of USBRESMG.SYS and USBCALLS.DLL.
but then I've also gone back to 16bit USB drivers as the 32bit ones do not print to my HP Deskjet 9300 unless it is turned on first when the computer is booted.

Scanners known to work.

PS, the HP ScanJet 4C and Epson Perfection 1660 Photo where originally from Paul Smedley :)

 Hi Martin,

Been using an ancient Epson Perfection 2480 photo scanner with ArcaOS and BWW's 1.0.28 version of SANE with Tame without any problems. It was a bit tricky to get working, but once sorted out works well.

Hi

I will test tonight two scanners I have here.
- Epson EcoTank L4150 - Multifunction printer with a flatbed scanner.
- HP ScanJet Proo 2000 S1 - Duplex Sheet-feed Scanner

What are the recommended first steps with SANE, or commands to see if its get recognized by Sane in any way?
I have never use SANE directly, I remember I used just the TAME/2 GUI long time ago.

Hi Martin,

run sane-find-scanner.exe :)
I connected one of the epson's up and it returned:

  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your

  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports

Lars, I'll try your drivers tomorrow, I've tried them in the past but cant remember why I changed.

Just uploaded 10.237 to Hobbes.

ok, will try your new ones you just uploaded to hobbes in the morning :)

I did just load usbdrv234.zip, printer works fine when turned on after boot but with your provided usbcalls.dll and USBRESMG.SYS I get:

SCANIMAGE.EXE: open of device epson2 failed: Invalid argument

back leveling both everything seems to work fine.

I'll also try BWW's sane build tomorrow.

I do have a vague memory that your USB drivers were faster with external USB SATA drives than AN's but I think I ended up settling on AN's USB drivers as I was switching between the 16 and 32 drivers and it was just easier at the time. My OS/2 install in from the mid 90's, I've simply replace files and updated bits since then without a fresh install so it's not really eCS or AN but..

There was a change in USBCALLS.DLL / USBRESMG.SYS and it was not binary compatible with old versions of USBCALLS.DLL.
I think at some point Paul updated SANE to support the newer USBCALLS.DLL. But I cannot remember where to find that new SANE version.

Hi

No luck for the moment.

I'm trying the Epson EcoTank L4150 - Multifunction printer with a flatbed scanner.

lsusb recognize it:
Quote
[X:\]lsusb
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 04b8:1135 Seiko Epson Corp.
I'm guessing the printer and scanner has the same HardwareID.

I installed Tame/2 - Tame_1-0-5_2008-04-26.exe. I did not installed USBRESMG.SYS and USBCALLS from that package, since I already have it ArcaOS.
I have USBRESMG.SYS and USBCALLS 12.7 from ArcaOS.

Code: [Select]

I'm running "sane-find-scanner" from Tame.
[X:\programs\tame]sane-find-scanner

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

  # No USB scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel driver for your USB host controller and have setup
  # the USB system correctly. See man sane-usb for details.
  # SANE has been built without libusb support. This may be a reason
  # for not detecting USB scanners. Read README for more details.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

Nothing detected. Now I will try the newer SANE. Sane-backends-1.0.27-os2-20190321.zip.

Hi

The latest SANE (Sane-backends-1.0.27-os2-20190321.zip.) give me a different message.

Hi

Now I don't know what do do.
I replaced the SANE files inside the TAME installation folder with the latest SANE port.
I tried TAME/2 and selected different configurations like "Epson StylusScan 2000", "Epson RX640" and "Expson GT9700 USN" and I don't get a preview, or any scanner action at all.

If I run "Scanimage -L" I get a OS2DASD trap.

Looks like SANE also requires USBLIB. You all make sure that you have an updated version. Update via RPM.

Hi Martin,

First you need to determine the 'backend' that SANE needs for your scanner. You get this from 'Scanimage -L'. Here is what I get:

device `snapscan:libusb:001:002' is a EPSON EPSON Scanner1 flatbed scanner
device `epson2:net:192.168.21.201' is a Epson PID 110B flatbed scanner

It shows I heve 2 scanners, one using the 'snapscan' backend on a USB port (my scanner), and one using the 'epson2' backend over the network (my printer). Whatever scanner you choose in Tame must use the correct backend (not always obvious). You might also need to edit the *.conf file for your backend (some require firmware uploads) and enable that backend in dll.conf. Net.conf needs to be attended to if using a networked scanner running saned (like some printers).

If you can't get the backend, then your SANE installation is not right. I am using the BWW version installed using ANPM. All drivers and files are either from there or installed with ArcaOS 5.0.6. Been a very long time since I did it by hand... the Tame *.inf file could be helpful.

I have the scanner working, but still fooling around with the printer. These things take time!

Paul recommended me on IRC to use "SANE" from the RPM YUM instead of  the one on his site.

So I remove TAME/2 and SANE to start over.
I installed "yum install sane-backends".

I set up by hand the following on the config.sys.
  set sane_config_dir=x:\etc\sane.d

sane-find-scanner give me the following:
Code: [Select]
[X:\]sane-find-scanner

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x147e [UPEK], product=0x1002 [TouchStrip Fingerprint
Sensor      ]) at libusb:001:003
could not fetch string descriptor: Input/output error
could not fetch string descriptor: Input/output error
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x1135) at libusb:001:004
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

ScanImage -L is producing me a TRAP on OS2DASD even with the RPM netlabs SAME sometimes.  If I disconnected the scanner from the USB port it will not trap, reconnect it and scanimage -L will say it did not recognize a scanner.

Paul suggested:
Quote
sane logs might be interesting...
set SANE_DEBUG_xxxxxxx=255
set SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255
set SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255
scanimage -v 1>output.pnm 2>debugoutput.txt
xxxxxxx is the backend for your scanner

I still do not understand what is a backend. I guess it is a config files inside "\etc\sane.d", right?

I'm not sure what else can I try.

I still do not understand what is a backend.
A front end is a program or a program part that calls the back end. Simplified: front end is the (G)UI and back end does the real work. On Linux these parts are often fully separated: There exist a back end command line program and a separate GUI application to ease the access to the back end program.

Hi Martin,

What Andreas said.

I run sane from cmd files, been a while since I've used tame as I find it quicker just to type epson1240(.cmd) from the commandline.
Important for sane to know where its backend files are (config files) which in my case are in \apps\sane\conf, this is done with a set command.
set sane_config_dir=\apps\sane\conf     (or as you have done, in x:\etc\sane.d)

Then I run scanimage telling it which backend configuration file to use, with the parameters I want.
    SCANIMAGE.EXE -d epson2 -l 0 -t 0 -x 215 -y 297 --mode Color --resolution 300 --depth 14 --format=tiff

Tame hides all this from you as its the nice front end gui.
Looking at your results from scanimage -L,  "USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x1135) at libusb:001:004".
I cant find the vendor ID in any of the conf files (looking at the mine and BWW's), neither can scanimage -L otherwise it would normally indicate more than the the numbers.

 Hi Martin,

The Trap in OS2DASD is very strange - OS2DASD is a driver for getting data from discs and such (Direct Access Storage Device). Not clear why scanimage would even affect it. Is there a card reader or thumb drive or something attached to the scanner?

I think of a 'backend' as a type of driver. Each type of scanner needs a driver, and the 'backend' is that driver. The files in X:\etc\sane.d are the configuration files for each backend. The actual backend 'drivers' are in X:\usr\lib\sane.

Hi Martin

You seem to have 2 scanners that do not appear to be supported in either current release http://www.sane-project.org/sane-supported-devices.html or current development http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-mfgs-cvs.html

Looks like all the Epson L series supported to date use the epson2.conf but you may need a later sane than we have available...

The HP ScanJet Pro 2000 S1 is supported by hplip 3.18.12 but will probably not work with OS/2 port of sane as it also requires a HP (closed source) plugin see https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/index

Strange that you get a trap in os2dasd when trying to access a scanner... Possibly something wrong with usb configuration or a wrong level of driver/support file somewhere?

Thanks for the feedback

I understand better was is refereed as "backend" since it the SANE software, but also the conf file.

Quote
Then I run scanimage telling it which backend configuration file to use, with the parameters I want.
    SCANIMAGE.EXE -d epson2 -l 0 -t 0 -x 215 -y 297 --mode Color --resolution 300 --depth 14 --format=tiff

Ian, I had tried your suggest scanimage command, with "epson, epson2 and epsonds" and I did not get any response from the scanner.

Pete, thanks for the more specific information and links. It seems that my Epson Scanner (04b8:1135) is listed on a backed called "utsushi (http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-backends-external.html#S-UTSUSHI)". I was expecting to be as simple as getting a .conf file, but it seems that something needs to be compiled.

The other things that is an stopper for me is that I get an OS2DASD trap while running "Scanimage -L".

Hey David,

The Trap in OS2DASD is very strange - OS2DASD is a driver for getting data from discs and such (Direct Access Storage Device). Not clear why scanimage would even affect it. Is there a card reader or thumb drive or something attached to the scanner?

My guess would be that it's due to the support for SCSI scanners in Sane... ASPIROUT.SYS (from memory) is called by Sane which ends up routing requests through any SCSI drivers - perhaps these end up going via os2dasd...

Cheers,

Paul

Aspirout.sys interacts with os2aspi.dmd. I don't see a direct relationship with os2dasd.dmd. But maybe there is a bug where one driver overwrites memory of another driver or some such.

The strange thing is that I get the OS2DASD trap on both scanners, plugged individually. The Epson L4150 is a multifunction printer, it does not have card reader, but it may have more internal things. The HP ScanJet Pro 2000 S1 is just a pure scanner.

also not listed within tame..

guess it is not supported by os/2? hope i am wrong..

my usb100.dll's date is 23.12.19
usbcalls.dll from 29.10.20

Not being facetious all I can suggest is that you get a network scanner that will scan to FTP.

I went through the exercise several years ago for clients that were firmly set to use OS/2 but needed to scan most documents that arrived in the office.  We ended up with them using a Brother ADS-1500w document scanner connected to the network via WiFi to the main server running Peter's FTP server.

Hi

Ivan, I don't have the need to scan documents on OS/2, I'm just testing the hardware that I have around. Your suggestion is complete valid, but this is more like an experiment with the hardware that I have.

I will keep testing on the weekend and see what else can happen with these hardware I have.

Not using a usb scanner myself but would take a guess that you need to check all the usb support files are in place and at the right level. Hopefully someone with a working usb scanner will let you know what versions of libusb etc are required - you are using the sane 1.0.27 or later package?

By the way: if you install SANE via the RPM, it might happen that some outdated version of USBCALLS.DLL is installed to \USR\LIB.
With "outdated" I mean the version that was meant to work with USB 11.x.
Just rename or delete the version of USBCALLS.DLL in the \USR\LIB directory. The one in the OS2\DLL directory will be the up-to-date version, regardless if my USB driver set or the AN driver set.

Post by: Lars on January 08, 2021, 07:55:38 pm
Hm, I just checked: the version of USBCALLS that is installed by the SANE RPM is VERY old (from 2014) and it is NOT compatible with neither the AN USBRESMG.SYS nor my USBRESMG.SYS (USBRESMG.SYS and USBCALLS.DLL form a SET that interacts with each other).
I wonder if THIS is the source of all problems. Again, I suggest to rename or delete this DLL (you can always reinstall via YUM/RPM) and see if that solves the problem.

hi lars,
unfortunatelly this is not the problem. my usbcalls.dell is brandnew (04.01.21).

not using RPM here. ps/2 pc is not connected to the net.

Hi andreas

Which version of libusb10.dll is installed? - the current release of libusb1 is 1.0.21-2 plus the libusb1-legacy-0 release 1.0.16-2

Some debugging tips from the 1.0.27 readme.os2 :-

requires the following environment variable set so that Sane can find it's configuration files:
set sane_config_dir=?:\sane\etc\sane.d
where ? = drive letter involved

set SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255 - turns on debug information for the USB interface

I suggest you create a simple cmd file to set variables and test scanner eg:-

rem scan.cmd
set sane_config_dir=j:\programs\sane\etc\sane.d
set beginlibpath=j:\programs\sane\lib;
set SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255
scanimage -L 2> debugL.log

(change drive letters to suit your system)

Hopefully when run in the scanimage directory will create debugL.log which can be examined in the editor to try and spot where things go wrong.

Pete

How in the fucking world can I deinstall a single package, ignoring any dependencies ?
I'd like to install SANE via RPM but I would like to deinstall USBCALLS from RPM afterwards.

rpm --erase <package> might do it.

Unfortunately not. RPM prevents that. It insists on also erasing all dependent programs. It knows better than me, of course.

Hi Pete, as far as I can tell, at least the SANE version that is packaged as RPM uses usb100.dll and not libusb10.dll. usb100.dll seems to be the successor to libusb10.dll. usb100.dll in turn calls USBCALLS.DLL.
It looks like only "sane-find-scanner.exe" makes use of these USB libs. Maybe, that is called by "scanimage.exe".
I would really like to know what's wrong with the latest USBCALLS.DLL. I know Silvan worked on usb100.dll to work around some design deficiency in USBCALLS.DLL (which always existed).

Hi

I'm back with the USB scanner testing.

- ArcaOS 5.0.6 - 14.202
- AN USB Driver 12.07
- USBRESMG.SYS 12.07
- USBCALLS.DLL -  2020-08-15 -12.07 - (only one on the system - no usbcalls from rpm installed).
- libusb1 - 1.0.21-2
- libusb1-legacy-0 1.0.16-2
- Sane from Netlabs RPM - sane-backends - 1.0.28-2

- Epson L4150 multifunction printer (04b8:1135)

Config.SYS
Code: [Select]
set sane_config_dir=x:\etc\sane.d
set SANE_DEBUG_epsonds=255
set SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255
set SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255

LSUSB
Code: [Select]
[X:\]lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 046d:c077 Logitech, Inc. M105 Optical Mouse

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 05c8:0317 Cheng Uei Precision Industry Co., Ltd (Foxlink)

Do any new drives appear in the Drives folder when you attach a scanner?
No

OS2DASD
I had this trap on OS2DASD when I run "ScanImage -L"
I REM OS2ASPI.DMD (I think I have no need for it on the Thinkpad L420), rebooted and for the moment the trap is gone.

Testing
I did the "ScanImage -L >out.txt" and I got the "No scanner were identified".
Code: [Select]
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

Here it is the "scanimage -v 1>output.pnm 2>debugoutput.txt" results.

This is how I stand now, what else do you suggest to try to make the "04b8:1135" scanner to work?

Hi Martin

Looking through your debugoutput.txt file it looks as though sane/scanimage does not have support for the epson scanner as both epsonds and espon2 sections show a list of pci ids which those backends support and 0x04b8/0x1135 is not listed.

You could try adding the pci ids to the epsonds and epson2 .conf files # USB section eg epson2.conf:-

# epson2.conf
#
# here are some examples for how to configure the EPSON2 backend

# SCSI
scsi EPSON
# for the GT-6500:
#scsi "EPSON SC"

# Parallel port
#pio 0x278
#pio 0x378
#pio 0x3BC

# USB
usb 0x04b8 0x1135

# For libusb support for unknown scanners use the following command
# usb <product ID> <device ID>
# e.g.:
# usb 0x4b8 0x110

# Network
#
# net 192.168.1.123
net autodiscovery

Hi Andreas,

Perhaps How I installed SANE and TAME for the first time on my ArcaOS system. I used a two step approach. (https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,2023.msg21056.html#msg21056) helps you in getting your CanoScan LiDE 210 scanner working.

The sane-find-scanner.exe (size 81.044) works and shows:found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x190a [CanoScan], chip=GL124) at libusb:001:005

Speaking about backends. The scanimage.exe that works (size 4.817.128) has the sane scanner specific backends linked in.

Hi Martin

Looking through your latest debugoutput.txt it seems the scanner is recognised and opened, see line 1729, but something goes wrong after that.

Does the scanner also have wireless connectivity? - If "Yes" turn that off while trying to setup usb.

You probably need Paul or Sylvan to look through the debug file as there is more chance of them spotting a problem.

Hi Wim,
I assume you are using an up to date version of USBCALLS.DLL and USBRESMG.SYS, correct?
That at least would confirm that we do not need to rework either one.

So what is the strategy / configuration options available to utilize the RPM SANE release in a TAME installation?

I haven't actually tried it yet but it seems like removing the previous SANE install from the TAME directory and literally having TAME issue the normal calls it normally would, which in this case would all come from the \usr\bin directory, should suffice?

It goes w/o saying that the appropriate changes in the various SANE SET...= options need to be made as well.

Martin,
My experience does not directly apply to your problem, but having previously used my HP ScanJet 6390 through the SCSI interface I'm looking to simplify and convert to USB hook up. So far the CLI attempts have worked and I am getting a good scan. Once I can test the TAME re-config I will provide a fuller report-out, although I think for the most part everyone else here has covered that pretty well.

I guess that scanimage.exe (size 25.154) in \usr\bin works by dynamically loading scanner specific backends.
It seems to me that the "Sane from Netlabs RPM - sane-backends - 1.0.28-2" does not contain these.
Title: Re: USB Scanners and ArcaOS

Exactly. You need to install an additional RPM that is not listed as a prerequisite.
You need to install "sane-backends-drivers-scanners".
That will drop a bunch of DLLs into /usr/lib/sane, one DLL per conf file.
And if a scanner is a USB scanner, these DLLs will use usb100.dll which in turn uses USBCALLS.DLL to do their job.

Now scanning with the CanoScan LiDE 210 using Tame/2 on my ArcaOS system works with the latest drivers.

Thank you, Lars!

It seems to me that the "Sane from Netlabs RPM - sane-backends - 1.0.28-2" does not contain these.

Yup, that's right.

I took a look at the SANE RPMs that are currently out there last night, here is what I installed:

1) sane-backends.pentium4                         1.0.28-2.oc00
This is the core of the SANE package, but limitted to mostly the EXEs themselves.

2) sane-backends-daemon.pentium4                  1.0.28-2.oc00
This is the network daemon in case you want to serve up your locally attached scanner over the network.

3) sane-backends-doc.noarch                       1.0.28-2.oc00
Documentation for SANE...although scanimage appears to be corrupted. At least here despite the fact that it can be found here => \usr\share\man\man\scanimage.1.gz, executing 'man scanimage' just produces a blank one-liner :
Code: [Select]
[G:\usr]man scanimage
Manual page scanimage(1) line ?/? (END) (press h for help or q to quit)

4) sane-backends-drivers-scanners.pentium4        1.0.28-2.oc00
This is the other part that actually has the scanner hardware backend details. I am guessing this was split up b/c that approach would allow you to update these independently of the EXEs themselves.

5) sane-backends-libs.pentium4                    1.0.28-2.oc00
This is the matching drivers DLL package.

So per Wim's previous recommendation I went back to the older post. Having completely purged SANE from the current TAME install location, indeed the RPM release of scanimage.exe appears to be the only thing that must be physically moved back to the TAME directory. Having updated all of the other settings that allows TAME to use the RPM SANE release.

Here is what I have in my CONFIG.SYS:

Code: [Select]
REM **********************
REM ***  SANE - START  ***
REM **********************
REM Line below is specific to TAME install
rem SET SANE_CONFIG_DIR=G:\apps\graphics\tools\tame\conf

REM Line below is specific to RPM install
SET SANE_CONFIG_DIR=g:\etc\sane.d
SET SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE=libusb:001:001

SET SANE_DEBUG_HPAIO=4
SET SANE_DEBUG_HP=4
SET SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=4
SET SANE_DEBUG_DLL=4

REM Options below allow to keep the connection OPEN all the time
REM    as opposed to an OPEN/CLOSE operation
REM SET SANE_HP_KEEPOPEN_SCSI=1
REM SET SANE_HP_KEEPOPEN_USB=1
REM SET SANE_HP_KEEPOPEN_DEVICE=1
REM **********************
REM ***   SANE - END   ***
REM **********************

That has allowed me to successfully scan from CLI as well as through TAME using the USB hookup.

I suppose the only other thing that I'm unclear about is the SET SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE=libusb:001:001 statement. This does work here, however TAME still references the 'hp' backend and indeed the CLI it executes still uses that as well, namely:

Code: [Select]
Start:    10 Jan 2021  00:43:52
Job:      Scan to file
Command1: START /MIN /C SCANIMAGE.EXE -d hp --resolution 1200 --format=tiff -l 0 -t 0 -x 215 -y 296 > G:\tmp\scanner\Image025.tif
File:     G:\tmp\scanner\Image025.tif (17764970 bytes)
End:      10 Jan 2021  00:46:36

For consistency's sake it's worth adjusting this in TAME, which is what I will test out next.

Ahh, one other thing, the USB DLLs.

Martin,
Here is what I have:

1) libusb1.pentium4                          1.0.21-2.oc00
2) libusb1-legacy-0.pentium4                 1.0.16-2.oc00.L
3) libusbcalls.i686                          12.07-1.oc00

...

Quick test this was.

No-Go, the 'hp' (in my case) is baked into TAME, I assume through it's scanner list database. So this is actually a non-editable field and is auto-populated once you select the scanner.

Sooo, '-d hp' still works, TAME is happy. Meanwhile the current SET SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE=libusb:001:001 statement needed a small change. I found multiple on-line references to Linux style mappings, such as:

1) SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE="hp:/dev/scanner"
2) SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE="plustek:libusb:002:002"

In the end, relying on Wim's earlier post and using his quick CMD as a template (Thank You Wim!) I was able to whip-up a working setup where the correct value is: "SET SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE=hp:libusb:001:001".

Here is what that looks like when the following scanimage CLI is executed "g:\usr\bin\scanimage -v 1>\tmp\scanner\scanner_scan.pnm 2>\tmp\scanner\scanner_scan.txt":

Code: [Select]
[sanei_debug] Setting debug level of dll to 4.
[dll] sane_init: SANE dll backend version 1.0.13 from sane-backends 1.0.28
[dll] sane_init/read_dlld: attempting to open directory `g:\etc\sane.d/dll.d'
[dll] sane_init/read_dlld: using config directory `g:\etc\sane.d/dll.d'
[dll] add_backend: adding backend `hp'
Output format is not set, using pnm as a default.
[dll] sane_open: trying to open `hp:libusb:001:001'
[dll] load: searching backend `hp' in `/@unixroot/usr/lib/sane'
[dll] load: trying to load `/@unixroot/usr/lib/sane/hp1.dll'
[dll] load: dlopen()ing `/@unixroot/usr/lib/sane/hp1.dll'
[dll] init: initializing backend `hp'
...

One can tell how the 'hp' backend is successfully resolved.

EDIT
====
Has anyone taken over the TAME maintenance? I think Paul has released the SANE updates in the past, may have been packaged together actually...it's been a while.

The reason I ask, there are some changes in the past backends and the latest one we have today (1.0.28), specifically for my 'hp' backend the 'grayscale' setting is no longer valid, instead it would appear that was replaced by 'gray'.

A quick look at the TAME INI file shows some of these being stored, but I haven't quite figured out how these map to the actual SANE commands TAME uses, is this hard-coded?

 Hi Dariusz,

Copy SCANNER.DAT to SCANNER.INI, then open SCANNER.INI in an INI editor. You will see the scanners listed and keys for the various settings for each tab of Tame. The hard part is figuring out which values are for what setting, but theoretically you can create a new scanner for Tame this way...

Hi Dariusz

To get a Canon MG7550 scanner working with Tame/2 I used the following steps:-

1] Identify a  scanner with similar capabilities

2] Copy scanner.dat to scanner.dat.ini

3] Open scanner.dat.ini in an INIEditor

4] Copy Application of scanner identified in 1] above to a new Application name - usually Make/Model

5] Edit key A to reflect the .conf file used and scanner Make/model

6] Save and Exit INIEditor

7] Copy scanner.dat.ini to scanner.dat

8] Test with Tame/2

Hopefully the above will work for you.

Dave and Pete,

Thank you guys, this worked great.

Since my HP 6390C was already there, I had simply adjusted the 'Grayscale' label and replaced with 'Gray'. This worked, TAME automatically recognized the modified settings AND they worked. I atteched that adjusted file in case anyone else needs this.

Now given all the other contents of the INI file, can anyone actually spell out the format so that I could decipher what scaner features are actually utilized?

This may seem like a pointless question, after all whatever choices are present they should be visible in the GUI itself, right?

Well, because of the above I have to ask the following: does anyone know if TAME has dithering controls support? Specifically if the scanner supports 'Halftone' option, are there any Tame controls that allow me to adjust the settings?

For example, my scanner shows:

Code: [Select]
--halftone-pattern Coarse|Fine|Bayer|Vertical|Horizontal|Custom [inactive]
Defines the halftoning (dithering) pattern for scanning halftoned
        images.

...but I have not spotted where this setting is controlled in Tame (maybe it is not?). It may be that the "[inactive]" indicates that the scanner does NOT support this...not sure, I figured I'd ask first.

Hi

I'm stuck with my USB scanner tests. I really don't know what else I should test with SANE to find out if the scanners that I have are supported or not. I'm don't know what else to do to complete my tests and get to the conclusion that the scanner work or not.

I guess that once I make it work with SANE (if possible), later I should give a try with Tame/2 for the frontend.

I think you are waiting for a release of sane that includes the utushi backend for the epson scanner.

Maybe you can persuade HP to open source the plugins that some HP scanners (including the ScanJet Pro 2000 S1) and printers need to work with the hplip package.

Sorry to not be more helpful

Hi Pete.

Do you think that , according to my tests on this thread and your experience, these scanners will not work with the current tools we have on ArcaOS? So, a SANE utushi backend port is needed for my Epson scanner and for the HP scanner there is missing a component that is not open.

I just ask these because I don't have experience with SANE and I just want to know that I have tried what it is possible with the software that we have ported to the platform.

I suggest you create a simple cmd file to set variables and test scanner eg:-

rem scan.cmd
set sane_config_dir=j:\programs\sane\etc\sane.d
set beginlibpath=j:\programs\sane\lib;
set SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255
scanimage -L 2> debugL.log

(change drive letters to suit your system)

Hopefully when run in the scanimage directory will create debugL.log which can be examined in the editor to try and spot where things go wrong.

Pete

hi pete,
thanks for the script.
i had to change the location for beginlibpath to usr\lib\sane.

check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the

unfortunatelly that's all i get...

Wim

thanks so much for your message. and sorry for the late response.
still i have my problem. but at least now i know that there should be a solution since in your case it works.

i just found out, that i have sane-backends, sane-backends-daemon and sane-backends-libs installed, but not
sane-backends-drivers.scanners, though my try trial to install it leads to the information that i have all packages
installed...

Hi Martin

I think you have summed up correctly: the epson is not yet supported and the hp needs a closed source plugin to work with hplip/hpaio.

The good news is that there is a backend being developed for the epson  :-)

Hi andreas

Sorry, missed the debug line out of the script. Add this line just after the set SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255 line
   set SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255

Hopefully we will then get some debug info to work with.

Regards

sorry again for the late reply.
meanwhile i installed/updated all the relevant rmp-packages.
running your scropt i get now a positive result. is says:
device 'genesys:libusb:001:001' is a Canon Lide 210 flatbed scanner.

the debug log says some dlls are missing: v4l1.dll, qcam1.dll, pint1.dll, mu_usb21.dll, mustek1.dll, hpsj5s1.dll, den_net1.dll, coscan31.dll,arus48u1.dll
are these files imprtant for me in any way? if so, where can i find them?

Maybe the missing of these dll lead to a problem with not beeing able to ioen the lighttavle folder and also the OCR tool.

though my scanner does not appear in the program a an option to choose, it works when i choose "lide 60"

followed some hint i found here in an other thread, i copied scanner.dat to scanner.ini. with the use of an ini-editor i copied the application Canon Lide 60 and named it Canon Lide 210. Now i can see my scanner on the display...

thanks for your help
