Hardware / Re: VM Parallel support inside OS/2
« on: August 11, 2020, 04:35:59 pm »
I'm thinking that Odin can probably run FAX software that would run in NT 4.0. Then the parallel port would likely work.

Didn't OS/2 have kick-ass FAX software in the past, though? I thought I remembered it as one of the reasons to switch from NT to OS/2.

General Discussion / Print Screen in ArcaOS
« on: August 05, 2020, 11:39:56 pm »
Can you disable printscreen in ArcaOS? You can in OS/2, but I don't see the same dialog in ArcaOS.

Code: [Select]
Use the Print Screen page of System - Properties to allow the system to print the full screen or an open window in an OS/2 session.

To print a full screen:

1.Select the Enable radio button.
2.Close the notebook.
3.Place the pointer on the Desktop away from any open windows.
4.Press Print Screen.

To print an open window:

1.Select the Enable radio button.
2.Close the notebook.
3.Place the pointer in any open window.
4.Press Print Screen.

For a detailed explanation of each field, select from the list below:

Enable
Disable

Also whats the best way to figure out which version of ArcaOs I have installed? I can't remember if this was a 5.0.3 or 5.0.4 base install?

Examine the \sys\install\install.flg file for installation version date and details.

Hardware / Re: Thinkpad X250 for ArcaOS?

No cards work with X250. The latest cards with any OS/2 support are now 15 years old. See my page for Travel Routers.

There is some interesting background information on running Lotus in a DOS window

Applications / Re: Windows 10 and ArcaOS 5.x Dual Boot
« on: July 30, 2020, 04:58:48 am »
Why compare IBM BM with AiRBoot? In cases, where IBM BM (still) works, it might be the best solution, because it uses an own partition. In other cases it's the opposite.

A boot manager that occupies an own partition rather survives the installation of another system than one that is placed in the MBR. For the MBR case: Just reinstall it. Or didn't that work for you?

As you guessed, AirBoot does not work no matter how many times you install it. Although I did not think of reinstalling from Windows as Sigurd recommended. Installing MBR does allow Windows to boot. I can also boot ArcaOS from USB stick, which is how I was unsuccessfully reinstalling AirBoot.

I'm hoping this somehow helps Martin with his original post.

I had this working on my Lenovo Thinkpad X250. It worked fine for a couple of weeks, then I decided to add a new volume with ArcaOS Installation and Volume Manager. After I rebooted, AirBoot no longer works. It starts to put up the menu, then the machine stops working.

If I reinstall AirBoot, nothing is fixed.

If I go back to default MBR, only Windows 10 works. The ArcaOS volume is there, but nothing can tell it to boot.

OK, I have it working on my T540p. Now on to repair the X250 and try it there.

I'm trying to remember how to save/restore DOS Settings so I don't have to type in the whole thing each time.

Thanks to Martin for the Lotus DOS files.

I'm also going to give it a try on the UEFI-boot system when I get some time.

I had INSTALL.EXE marked in the DOS settings. I still get the error. I have no idea if my disks are the problem. I made real disks since I do not have a Virtual system. Like you, for me it would be more useful to mound .img files than to use real floppy disks.

I got new information from the user. The T540p does work. Now the question is: why does it work?

Question: does your Thinkpad L420 use the VIOP.SYS driver? I'm pretty sure his T540p does use it.

Setup & Installation / klibc user manager
« on: July 27, 2020, 04:46:51 pm »
I installed ArcaOS 5.0.5, but something is odd with klibc user manager. I don't see icons for it anywhere. If I re-install using ANPM, I get icons, but I can't edit users. They list just fine, but when I edit, nothing can be changed.

in \etc\master.passwd, root has an *, which I guess means no password.

SAMBA users and group, which relies on this, also does not work.

Searching for bug reports, I get a lot of hits on "I really ought to write some documentation".

My x250 is out of commission for now, so I got a T540p. I have customer complaints that DOS does not work on any machine newer than T43. I don't use DOS myself, so I can't easily troubleshoot.

I don't have 123.EXE, I have tried the install disks. Disk1 still gives the error listed above in the DOS Full Screen.

I think the L420 would be new enough if it only worked. But not being a DOS user, I have no idea.

Others are trying UEFI, which is good. There ought to be a way to do this, but often so often, DOS users cannot or will not use Internet.

Merely running a DOS full screen is not adequate. It has to run IBM Lotus 123 DOS r 34. And X250 does not even come close.

I have no data between T43 (April 2005 release) and X250 (2015 release). Obviously, the BIOS has been in decline since UEFI came out. But what is the last laptop that will work?

For running in a DOS VDM under OS/2 we need 2 things.

1. The computer must have a sufficient BIOS to run Lotus 123 DOS

Clearly the X250 running CSM in legacy mode does not meet this requirement
So far the most recent laptop that can run it is T43 (April 2005)

2. The following DOS Settings are used:

DOS_FILES
64
DOS_VERSION
123.EXE,3,40,255
123DOS.EXE,3,00,255
LOTUS.EXE,3,40,255
DPMI_DOS_API
ENABLED
DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT
16
EMS_FRAME_LOCATION
C0000
EMS_MEMORY_LIMIT
8192
MEM_EXCLUDE_REGIONS
D0000-DFFFF
MEM_INCLUDE_REGIONS
C0000-CFFFF

I thought I'd post and refine my search a little bit. Yes, this is a user who is on R34, and moving to a different version is too difficult.

The ideal solution would be to find working hardware. The IBM Thinkpad T43 works on eCS and probably therefore ArcaOS. The Lenovo Thinkpad X250 fails on ArcaOS. What is the last Thinkpad that can really run a DOS program like Lotus 123? I like the idea of going backward to hardware that works, then enhance that hardware to be usable.

I did see an IBM document regarding issues around running Lotus 123 DOS under OS/2. The user is currently on a T43 and it works, so presumably he knows how to do that.

I see the same issue as Martin installing Lotus 123 under DOSBox/2.

I need to supply Lotus 123 DOS R34 compatibility. I was hoping DOSBox/2 would do the trick. But bare metal has it's virtues, too.

I imaging for VirtualBox I'd need to install DOS, too.

I tried WinWorld for the Lotus R34 disks, but they are copy-protected and won't install.
