General Discussion / OS/2 Lab Notes« Software Engineering Magazine!
« on: March 21, 2016, 09:15:45 pm »
Hi

I found this on the Google+ Social network: OS/2 Lab Notes« Software Engineering Magazine!

It is not been released yet, but he posted this on Google+:

Quote
Focusing on new projects, the »OS/2 Lab Notes« feature new material, exclusively. Nothing is reprinted. All articles are »fresh from the lab«, although they do rely on a massive base of information derived from practical programming partly dating back many years. Anyway, no reprints, all material is published the first time. This also is true for program sources accompanying the magazine's articles which were formerly closed. They become an open, freely usable source now.

Some sources, especially those of drivers, file systems, etc, date well back to 1992. The latest file from WorkplaceShell programming is from 2014. The older sources mainly serve documentary purposes, anyway. Emphasis is put on the new projects.

We will update the list of articles in preparation so far shortly to give a better insight into the nature of the material the »OS/2 Lab Notes« will offer.

Just a heads up. I'm not affiliated with this material or his author in any kind of way.

Hardware / Us vs. The Modern Laptops
« on: February 21, 2016, 02:24:20 am »
Hi

This is just for general discussion about modern laptops and the OS/2-eCS platform.

I just noticed today (it is new to me) that there are some laptops that has the video output port located as a USB-C port. An adapter is required to connect the laptop to a projector or external monitor.
I was looking the specs (I don not have it) of the "Lenovo YOGA 900 - YOGA 900-13ISK". I really do not know if this is the tendency for the future. And if it uses some "USB based Video chipset" to allow the output as an additional monitor.

Will it be required USB 3.0 and USB Video support drivers to connect an external monitor/projector on this kind of laptops with OS/2-eCS? Any thoughts?

Applications / GCONFIG driver ?
« on: February 11, 2016, 03:18:24 pm »
Hi

I was reading that there used to be some discussion on the past about a GCONFIG driver.
- [acpi-os2] BASEDEV etc.
- [acpi-os2] 32-bit PDDs?

Does anybody knows if some source code or binary was ever produced? Any hints? ... even if it some incomplete work.

Applications / Experiment: cWarp - Crappy Warp / Changing the stuff.
« on: January 28, 2016, 04:24:16 pm »
Hi

As the next step of my older experiment (bWarp) I created cWarp.

The goal of this experiment was to remove IBM's OS/2 components based on what is available for free and/or open source.

The goal remains to have:

- Boot the OS
- Run PM and WPS (so SOM is still there)
- Run cmd and PM applications
- Ability to run REXX scripts
- DHCP working
- Ping google.com
- CD/DVD Support
- JFS / HPFS Support (ok JFS is not that solid now)
- E.EXE is still there.

You can found information about this experiment at:
- cWarp
- cWarp Directory/Files Structure
- cWarp Config.sys

For the moment it is working, it is broken of course, there are things that are not running. But PM apps, Qt Apps, Rexx scripts are running. Yum runs and installs the software on C:\Programs\FHS\. Of course that somethings are very broken.

I focused on leaving all the IBM's Binaries on \OS2 (Expect of the Kernel), every replacement I was able to find (and that is allowed to be moved) was located on \WARP.

So I'm looking for any replacement of this files: Required Replacements
Any way to help me with the files that are not marked, or marked in white are welcome. I want to keep experimenting how much can be replaced.

Applications / About Amouse Driver
« on: January 16, 2016, 05:21:36 pm »
Hi

Just in case I have the AMouse (mouse and USB) driver source code. I can not make the source code public since it is based on the IBM DDK. But the developer has agreed that his changes can be shared in a BSD 3-Clause license style. Since I don't know how  to only share the changes, I'm not able to put the source code on the public.

But if you have any use for the AMouse driver source code contact me to see what can be done.  I was thinking that maybe it can be put on Netlabs as a close source project, but with the changes owner by netlabs to be turn into collaborative (but close source) project.  Maybe this is old news or the Amouse source code was shared already with other developer, but I think it needs to be announced publicly that we have this resource available.

The Amouse GUI is already open source under BSD 3-Clause license.  That is no problem with that and to continue making it an open source project.  (https://github.com/OS2World/DRV-Amouse-GUI).

Hi

Just as a novelty thing for people that runs websites, I found this tool (that requires a browser with java) to put some keywords and check the related website relations according the search.
http://www.touchgraph.com/seo

I searched for:
OS2
OS/2
OS/2 Warp
OS/2 Community
OS/2 Events
eComStation
eComStation Community
eComStation news
..and Blue Lion

The graph looks kind interesting, maybe obvious to some. It is still not fair for "Blue Lion" since it is a not the final name and the product is still not available.

Maybe it can be interesting to play with some other words to find something else about the relations of websites of the community.
It is also kind of interesting to see the weight of TechRepublic for the news about "Blue Lion" and because it cover from time to time things related to eComStation.

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Help Request: OS2World Gaming Site
« on: January 05, 2016, 02:22:05 pm »
Hi

Currently the OS2World Gaming Site is being neglected by me: http://www.os2world.com/games/

I want to know if there is any volunteers available to help on the site to update it with the latest games and related news. It is not going to be a lot of time consuming, but I need some extra hands with it.

The good thing is that the web site is built in Joomla and it is very easy to maintain, and the script "up-to-date". I will help the volunteer to understand how to create the "articles" on joomla and how to edit those to update the games page.

Please let me know if someone wants to help with it.

Applications / Arca Noae Package Manager Comments
« on: January 04, 2016, 02:08:01 pm »
Hi

I just started to test Arca Noae Package Manager and I think it is a step in the right direction with RPM/YUM.

I keep disliking Linux FHS, but that is not much related to this software. What I will try, if I finish some other work related things, is to move the path outside C: root like I did it on the past with RPM/YUM.

What do you think about the software? Screenshot and information is welcome for the OS2World Wiki.

Article Discussions / [Arca Noae] Checked your disk lately?
« on: December 06, 2015, 06:14:53 am »
Reference: [Arca Noae] Checked your disk lately?

It is a great milestone for DFSee to support GPT, but I'm still thinking how useful will be that for OS2-eCS-BlueLion installation.

I'm guessing that it should be useful for someone to boot from USB/CD and with DFSee try to repartition and already partitioned HDD (by Windows or Linux) and resize partition to fit OS2-eCS-BlueLion. (and of course use all the great features of DFSee on a GPT drive) But once you boot the Installer will it recognize the installation partition on GPT or after installing the OS, will it boot?

I was told that what we are missing is to create some GPT driver like a FLT (Filter Device Driver). Will a  GPT.FLT driver will work without having UEFI support?

We at Arca Noae would like to thank ...., and OS/2 VOICE for its ongoing community support.

I really do not know the formal relationship between Arca Noae and OS2VOICE, I'm getting jealous about it  :P

I personally want to thank Steve Wendt from OS/2 Warp New and Rumors, the people from Italy behind eCSoft/2 and the people that uploads their software to hobbes and netlabs for their great "ongoing community support", and super special thanks to the developers that shares their software and don't hide their source code to the public.

Applications / OSS Project ideas for OS2VOICE
« on: December 02, 2015, 09:41:43 pm »
Hi

I recalled Roderick saying at Warpstock 2015 that OS2VOICE has some funds available and he was looking for some ideas for Open Source projects on the platform to sponsor.  Here it is a link to his presentation.

If Roderick is around maybe he can tell us if he is still looking for ideas

Community member are welcome to share any ideas of already existing open source software that can be good to port to OS/2 or any other OSS project that could be created for the platform. We are only providing ideas, OS2VOICE board is the one that has the final word and the conditions, but I think that it is good to share ideas.

So, what new open source projects will be interesting for the OS/2-eCS-BlueLion platform ?

Applications / LVM.DLL and IVM.DLL
« on: November 20, 2015, 10:39:30 pm »
Hi

While looking at eCS 2.1 I noticed these two files LVM.DLL and IVM.DLL

LVM.DLL used to be the library of the LVM functions. But on eCS 2.1 it seems that LVM.DLL is a forwarder to IVM.DLL, which also has the LVM functions.

Does anybody know the history of this LVM.DLL? did something got patches on the LVM.DLL forwarder to fix any problem on the original one?

Bldlevel on LVM.DLL shows

Code: [Select]
Signature:       @#eComStation Development Group:1.1#@##1## 20110111
     sigel::::::@@Forwarder for Logical Volume Manager

Description:     Forwarder for Logical Volume Manager

Article Discussions / Article: What Good Is Native .NET On Power?
« on: November 19, 2015, 01:34:04 am »
This is not an OS/2 related article, but it mention it. Wrote by Timothy Prickett Morgan: http://www.itjungle.com/tfh/tfh111615-story01.html

It says:

Quote
As IBM learned during the OS/2 Warp fiasco, where it was trying to emulate Windows inside of its own OS/2 operating system to have a larger addressable market, the emulated code was clunky and offered poor response time compared to the actual Windows, and IBM was always playing catch up with its support.

I can not decide myself to say if Windows 16bits is emulated in OS/2 or not. I always thought that Win16 run directly on OS/2 without the need of running a full instance of the Win16 OS. Maybe like Wine or Odin, which is not an emulator, but a clone of the libraries. ... or a clone of the libraries is also called an emulator? not sure.

Additionally it says " the emulated code was clunky and offered poor response time compared to the actual Windows"....maybe a Wikipedian will say... find a me a reference for saying that.
