Hardware / Re: USBCOM big problem
« on: July 31, 2025, 12:11:01 am »
Perfect thread for me to tag on to.

I have a gearmo FTDI FT232R - amazon usb rs232 with lights.

I followed the docs:
/sys/doc/usb/usbcom.txt - which then points to
     /sys/doc/usb/usbser.txt - for type FT232R.
the docs specifically call out that the FT232R has not been tested.

I built up the correct DEVICE line in config.sys, and placed it at the bottom of the file.

Questions for you all.
Should the usb rs232 be plugged in when you boot, or can you plug it in after you boot, or does that matter?

I installed ZOC and hooked up a loopback plug.

TX/RX do not seem to change state, but I see other lights, installing ZOC and setting to the correct com port Zoc thinks it's sending and receiving and I see stuff on screen.
Next test is to hook it to another computer with an RS232.

Last question, where can I find lsusb?
I queried the ANPM and it said NADA.

Thanks,
Dan

Programming / Re: Powerbasic for OS/2

 Hi,
Thanks for all the feedback. I was hoping to leverage past Turbo (Power) Basic.
Probably my best bet would be Watcom C + Blake Watson OS/2 Warp Programming for Dummies.

Thanks Again,
Dan

Hardware / Smart Hard Drive Monitoring on AOS 5.1.1
« on: July 30, 2025, 03:50:19 pm »
I've looked into the various threads here, and it seems smartmon monitoring can be done with,
   smartahci, pmsmartctrl and smartmonutils.

My first go-to is always ANPM.

Searching ANPM for SMART or SMART* doesn't return anything.

What is my best bet in 2025 on AOS 5.1.1 to read the smart values stored on a standard SSD?

 I appreciate any feedback.

If,  powerbasic doesn't exist, what is my best bet for a basic compiler for os/2?

Does anyone know where I can get a copy.

Thanks in Advance.

Setup & Installation / Re: BonusPak installation, fail.
« on: July 29, 2025, 11:28:41 pm »
Last post on this subject:

IBMWorks,
Instructions are correct, with the following caveats:

   use cmd.exe, not 4os.

Unzip bonuspak.zip in the root directory of whatever drive you are using.
This will give you files AND create the directory pathing that you need.

On the OS/2 Warp Version 4 (Code Name: Merlin) - verify you have a file called us.dic - if your system is set to English (US), or uk.dic if English (UK). These files are in: X:\OS2IMAGE\FI\BONUSPAK\IBMWORKS

ISO on the web are labeled ISO English, without regards of UK or US English.

 Hi @Doug Clark,
I wanted to give you an update.

I received the $50 dollar T530 (2392-45U), I already had an Samsung EVO 250GB SSD on the shelf.
I spent another $75 on 2x 8GB Kingston Memory Sticks, a CMOS battery and a Main Battery.

I upgraded the machine, and installed Arca OS 5.1.1 - it runs very well.

Thank you for your suggestion.

Setup & Installation / Re: BonusPak installation, fail.

Success.

I removed everything from D:

unpacked bonuspak.zip at the root of D:

Modified Source and Media to point to D: in  bpbase.rp

Copied from IBMWORKS Contents from Warp4 CD to the path create when I unzipped bonuspak.zip.

Opened CMD, not 4os.

Ran ibmworks.cmd (from the bonuspak.zip, in the root of D:) - It started the installer and was done, before I could read anything on the screen. Unfortunately, it didn't leave something on the command like - install successful, not did the installer screen stay up, waiting for a close now.

But, when I went into Programs>Installed Software, there is IBM Works.

A better answer, than re-typing examples in by hand, but not as good as a debugged sample disk, will be for me to cut and paste some of the examples from the full text edition, re-edit and debug.

>The error.png image looks like it has the answer: the file D:\\bpbase.rsp is not found
Ok so here is the interesting part.

I always use 4OS.

dir d:\\bpbase.rsp - will show the file.

Ahha! I said.
Maybe I need to use good old cmd.
dir d:\\bpbase.rsp
   no file returned.

I also tried running ibmworks.cmd from cmd - and that didn't change anything either. ...
