Hi David.

It is good to see you back here  !!

If you want to add some words and screenshots of you favorite OS/2 apps you can also post them on the OS2World Wiki. It uses the same userid and password of this forum.

Thank you for your reports.

I keep trying to update the wiki:
- Conceptronic CSOUNDU C08-041 USB Audio Stick
- Logitech USB Headset H340
- Mini Portable 3G/4G Wireless-N Hotspot AP 150Mbps RJ45

The wiki is far for perfect but it is taking shape :)

Keep posting more hardware. (Include the HardwareID and report if applies).

Hi Michael.

I also have zero experience with openvpn. Maybe you can post the several error messages that it produce. Maybe someone may see those errors familiar.

Thanks Wim.

I will include it.

I also have one with a "C-Media" chipset that I want to try. Does the Audio input works to put a mic there and record audio?
Any tips on the how is the config.sys configuration/parameters of it?

General Discussion / ReactOS 0.4.7 released
« on: December 07, 2017, 02:47:55 am »
Just in case, this is an offtopic !!!

ReactOS 0.4.7 was released:

"ReactOS 0.4.7 has been released, and it contains a ton of fixes, improvements, and new features. Judging by the screenshots, ReactOS 0.4.7 can run Opera, Firefox, and Mozilla all at once, which is good news for those among us who want to use ReactOS on a more daily basis. There's also a new application manager which, as the name implies, makes it easier to install and uninstall applications, similar to how package managers on Linux work. On a lower level, ReactOS can now deal with Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, BtrFS, ReiserFS, FFS, and NFS partitions. "
http://www.reactos.com/project-news/reactos-047-released

I'm amazed by the progress made of this OS. I remember that the first versions sucked very bad and all the people were taking it as a joke. We may disagree if the OS is ready or not for non experimental use, but it is moving forward.

I envy their organization and will to create an open source clone of their favorite OS. (which sadly was not OS/2).

General Discussion / Re: OS/2 application developers
« on: December 06, 2017, 01:02:27 pm »
Hi Demetrius

That is a difficult question because a developer will request to have the same experience on a clone implementation, so you will get the "all" answer. Implementing or cloning all is a very difficult task. I would recommend you to stick on the main APIs of OS/2 (CPI, PM). Maybe the first step will be try to replicate the CPI API  maybe trying to reuse some things from the OS2Linux project.

After you got some of the CPI API working it may lead to continue with the rest that it is on top, like PM.

Hi Alfredo.

What about a new logo (and in vector format) for the project inspired on the icon?

General Discussion / Re: OS/2 history

What happened to them? How’d they go missing?

Hi Demetrious.

That is something that it is being told (rumors). I don't think we ever going to get a formal letter from IBM saying "We have lost the OS/2 source code" or "We have the OS/2 source code complete safe".

I just added the  Corsair K55, just to document it does not work.

I had also added:

Any more hardware is welcome.. any kind.

Hi Alfredo.

Thanks for posting your manual. Currently it is hard to find people that want to document OS/2 software. I will recommend you to upload the manual to Hobbes and the Internet Archive also.

It depends too much how you like to write the manual, but there is also the eFTE/2 Track wiki and the OS2World wiki where you can collaborate to also post some of your documentation.

I don't use eFTE/2 but I applaud your efforts on the platform.

Hi Demetrious.

Just "dreaming in technicolor" here. If there will ever be a 64bit kernel it has to support the OS/2 apps.  For example the new 64bit kernel will have to trick the OS/2 components to make it believe that it is running under an OS/2 kernel. So you will grab all the OS/2's binaries components like PM, REXX, SOM, WPS and it will run over the new kernel, and as a consequence all OS/2 apps (that does not require access to drivers) will keep working.

I think that part of the requirement will be for the new 64bit kernel to trick, emulate or clone the behavior of the CPI (Control Program Interface) API, since that is the base API for OS/2. It looks to me that everything has to pass through the CPI to go to the kernel, with the exception of some components that calls directly specific drivers.

Applications / Re: changing ArcaOS boot screen
« on: December 03, 2017, 11:43:51 pm »
Hi

I think you can use PMView to save the image under the right format. I don't have my machine right here, but I think it was some format that PMView assigned the .LGO file extension.

Then you rename it and replace the Boot logo file.

Hi Demetrious

The EDM/2 also has the links to the IBM API documentation.
Here it is the main page: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/List_of_OS/2_Documentation

And you can check the documents at:

Applications / What is OS/2 AO-Manager ?
« on: December 01, 2017, 03:38:50 pm »
Hi

I'm updating some "Config.sys project" documentation and I found some that are used by something called IBM AO-Manager.

Does anybody knows what it is? Maybe it is something that has other name but I don't found much with that name on google.

Hi Rich.

...Why would anyone advocate confining them to the bloated and largely pointless @unixroot tree unless absolutely necessary? Group-think? A fondness for arrogant and authoritarian mindset that BWW unfailingly displays?

I had also presented my dislike of "Filesystem Hierarchy Standard" many times in the past. Even some groups of the Unix world dislike it. But on our case (The OS/2 platform) I think that the issue was that we became dependent of many Linux ports libraries and even that everything can be reorganized on a better structure it was very difficult to maintain a different layout only for OS/2 because of the lack of resources we have on this platform.

We had a lot of DLL versioning issues and RPM was a good solution to keep all that updated, but it came with a cost. It was to much of chore to have RPM customized to have a different FHS on OS/2. So for me it was to "suck it up" with FHS or try to find resources that wanted to maintain a customized RPM version only for OS/2 and that verifies that every ported/updated DLL works on that new structure.
