Web applications / Web/Browser Applications
« on: October 21, 2017, 05:36:50 pm »
Hi.

I though I had a previous post when I posted some web applications that I found running under OS/2's browser but I was not able to found those.

I found that there is some "web based" LibreOffice right here:
https://www.rollapp.com/app/lowriter

It is not that LibreOffice was ported to the web, it is more like a virtual Linux desktop on the browser that runs the application.

It run slow to me, but runs on Firefox. Give it a try and let me know.

Applications / Re: Applications OS/2 Needs

Hi Devon

These are my suggesstions:

#1: We have VLC ported.

#2: To freely draw images, I don't like what we have. My wishlist is to have a port of "InkScape" someday. SketchIt is open source but requires a lot of development to be something similar to Inkscape.

#3: I don't know much about it, but having an Audacity port will be great someday.

#4: I also use a Qt app called: STE (Sintegrial Text Editor)

If you want to do development on OS/2 remember that we have the "Classic way" using the OS/2 API with compilers that are not supported anymore, and we also have the "Open API" which are some libc, cairo, sdl and Qt APIs so you can use with the GCC compiler.  I prefer to give it a try to the "open compilers" first and use the discontinued software only when it is necessary and you can not find an open replacement.

I don't do development by I have tried to document little things like:
- Compiling "OS/2 Presentation Manager Programming" Samples on 2016
If I had better skills and more time I would really like to learn some Qt compiling and development.

Hi.

Yesterday I got permission from IBM to republish the articles from the "Personal Systems Magazine" that was stored online. (reference). The only difference on this permission is that IBM can not be 100% sure they own the copyrights of it, so they agreed to be republished if belongs to IBM, but in case someone complains I will need to take down the article.

I will be splitting the articles between the OS2World Wiki and EDM/2 (if the article is development related), but I will start first by organizing the articles on this page: "Personal Systems Magazine"

But I have a little problem here, I was only able to find the "online articles" so I'm missing several articles of the printed edition. If someone has a copy of the printed magazines, please scan it or send it to me so I can ask permission to republish the complete issue.

Let's keep working little by little to have as much as possible OS/2 documentation online !!!

Hi Guys.

This is something new for me. I didn't know that a way to promote OS/2 Warp was to include some kind of demo on the "3M 3.5" High Density DS Diskettes 24 pack". Very interesting. Does anybody tried it? I guess it was just some multimedia OS/2 demo.

Check it on ebay.

Hardware / Re: usb wifi in arca50????

Hi Roberto.

As far as I remember the GenMAC and GenMU only worked (when it works) for PCI and mini-PCI cards. I don't think that documentation will work for USB Wifi network adapters like your TP-Link TL-WN823N.

To be honest I don't remember if there is an Wireless USB network adapter that works under OS/2-ArcaOS.  If someone has more information please reply.

Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS 5.0.1 on Dual Boot.
« on: October 17, 2017, 05:13:40 pm »
Hi

According to the comments, it seems that it is not possible to install ArcaOS with the disk layout made by a previously installation of Windows 10. So the only solution seems to be wiping the HDD, backing the Windows 10 partition seems to be a good workarround to don't reinstall Windows 10, but the Win10 disk layout limitation remains in ArcaOS-OS/2.

What I have notice is that I can not wipe the partition from the tools on "ArcaOS System Mainagement". LVM (mini or CMD) does not want to commit any change to the partitions with the error "Disk 1 reports a corrupt partition table" when I try to save the changes and does not commit any change on exit.

Is there any other tool on the ArcaOS CD that will help me to wipe a HDD with a Win10 disk layout? or I need to use some other tool from outside the ArcaOS CD?

(Link to the ArcaOS Documentation)

Setup & Installation / Re: Warp Server on ArcaOS
« on: October 17, 2017, 03:02:37 pm »
Hi John.

I'm sorry that I don't know much about this subject and I'm not an expert on Warp Server, I used it very rarely on the past. I just wondering which components or Warp Server do you want to have on ArcaOS, it is just LAN Server, do you want ArcaOS to work as a File/Print server or anything else?

Did you READ the README, in the root of the DVD?

Doug: I don't know why you wrote "READ" in uppercase. I didn't read it completely. It is an 38 pages readme and the license of use does not says you need to read and memorize the 38 pages readme before using ArcaOS.  Which chapter do you refer to?

Quote
...you probably got the layout for very large disks, using a geometry that OS/2 cannot use (even though the disk is only about 350 GB).
Does that layout has a name and description somewhere? By the way, the Windows disk tool says it is installed on MBR (non GPT)

General note:
Richard, Doug. On this time I wanted to do a dual boot install of ArcaOS with Windows 10 without destroying the Windows partition and reinstalling it.  Why? Because it is a nag to reinstall Windows , all the apps and all your files you have previously used on Windows 10 on that machine.  (time consuming)

I appreciate your suggestion about wiping all the Hard Drive, for the moment it seems to be the only solution. It means there is a limitation of OS/2 and ArcaOS to understand the geometry that Windows 10 uses when it prepared the HDD (Limitation that Linux does not seems to has by the way) (please remember this a  non-UEFI, non-GPT system). It even will be interesting for me to know which drivers, or utilities are the one that need to updated to understand different geometries.

If someone else have a different suggestion, and show me that my opinion is wrong, and that you can install a dual boot Windows 10 / Arca OS system without destroying the partitions and without reinstalling Windows 10 please let me know.

Richard, I will follow your great tutorial to wipe all the HDD and reinstall on dual boot, but I just want to be sure if there is another way to do it without reinstalling Windows.

Setup & Installation / ArcaOS 5.0.1 on Dual Boot.
« on: October 14, 2017, 05:27:39 pm »
Hi.

This weekend I was trying to install ArcaOS on a non UEFI, non GPT machine with Windows 10 preinstalled.

I think I'm getting the usual limitations of ArcaOS installation tools.
- "Disk 1 reports a corrupt partition table".
- "LVM Error ( 8 ) - Operation is not allowed" when I try to create the partition.

I read other forum post about it.  This is a non-destructive dual boot installation try to install ArcaOS, so I don't want to go forward with all the partition wiping.

I had tried the included tools like "Disk Utility" and "Resize Partition". "Disk Utility" does not report any issue and "Resize Partition" tell me "No Resizable Partitions Found"

These are my questions:

1) Is there another way to fix how ArcaOS see the partitions without Dfsee ?  (without wiping the hard drive)
2) If I use DfSee, what should I change?
3) In my opinion I consider this an ArcaOS limitation where there is space for improvement, since there is no "corrupt table" on the disk and since Windows is preinstalled  (sadly) on the machines it will be the most common OS to dual boot. Was there any discussion about this on the past ?

I attach some screenshots of the partition layout, so maybe someone can point out if I'm doing something wrong. I'm trying to create a partition on the first 10GB free space of the HDD.

Networking / Re: Netgear Wireless PC Card
« on: October 13, 2017, 04:00:09 pm »
Hi

Just reading more about it:
* PC Card = PCMCIA Card (older name): 16-bit or 32-bit
* PC Card 32-bit version = Cardbus (alternative name)
- Source

I haven't found any references on the Netgear WG511 from the Hardware site.
http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Network_Adapters#PC_Cards_.2F_PCMCIA

Warp: Maybe it will be also interesting for you to try to find some other alternatives, like an Ethernet2Wifi adapter until Arca Noae releases newer wireless PCI drivers.
