Applications / Re: configuring the rpm release of cups

CUPS install has NOTHING, at all, to do with the printer type, and model.

So you are saying the the rpm/yum install installs all the various backends regardless of if they are needed or not.  I would have thought that the installer would at least want to know which printer type to allow it to install the correct backend.

Sorry but I am first and foremost an engineer and have this tendency to apply that thinking to computers and their software.  After all computers are supposed to be logical machines, but what I am seeing with this rpm/yum thing does not appear that logical.

The way that that is done, is to READ the program instructions, and install everything that it calls for, whether you think it is already installed, or not. The program sorts it out, and installs what you need (as long as the instructions are correct, and that has been known to be a problem sometimes).

In my mind it should be the responsibility of the installer to do the 'reading' of the instructions and then check what is installed, buildlevel etc., and check what options the person doing the install wants and only then install what is required.

In Pete's case it appears that it is not offering any options to install when it should be asking for, at least, the printer type if not the exact model.  This is not good especially when non technical people are trying to rely on it to install what they need to get their external equipment up and running.

Pete, I think you have discovered the BIG problem with the rpm/yum method of installing anything - it is dumb and will not work if anything else is there and it has not been given exact specifications on what to install (just look at the 'migrating from native ghostscript' thread).

For the rpm/yum install method to work it need some way of setting up what it is supposed to install especially where there are several options that may, or may not, be required.

Why am I getting a deja vu feeling here?

Maybe next week or the week after, maybe.

General Discussion / Re: Problem on the PDF creation

Are you sure there is such a DLL?

I use ePDF as the printer in firefox (works extremely well producing PDFs from web pages) and I can't find an EPDF.DLL on my system, ePDF.EXE yes but no ePDF.dll.

Martin,

Strange how the icons in your screen grab are not very much larger than those I have on my screen.  My sight is good out in the great outdoors but I need glasses to read text on the screen, something many of us nudging 80 do.

I am sure that Andreas is correct in saying it is the job of the Presentation Manager driver to give a suitable size to fit the screen resolution.

The main thing is that everyone has a different idea of what they like to see on a computer screen so we will have to agree to differ and hope we each end up with what we like as long as it complies with the way OS/2 does things.  Appearance, to a large extent, depends on the ability of the video drivers which takes us on to the need of improved SNAP to handle wide screen display panels for desktops and laptops (my 1440 x 900 laptop screen is not supported).

Martin,

What do you class as higher resolution monitors?  Our 28" 1920 x 1200 are using the standard OS/2 icons and most people comment about how clear they are compared to some of the win rubbish icons.

Maybe if we managed to get video drivers that would drive the 4k monitors we might need icons with a little more colour depth.

Unfortunately, many of these 'enhancements' are answers looking for problems rather than being the answers to problems.

Now I am worried.  If they are fixing problems at this late stage they have a very big problem because it leaves the question 'what are they going to miss?'

I don't know what the problem is but I have a feeling that they have added too much glitz at too late a stage and things are not working well together.  Maybe they should admit that they need more time (and state why) and put the release date back a bit more or we are likely to end up as the people with win 10, being second level beta testers - not a good position to be in.

Not trying to be critical but I do have a problem.  There is absolutely no information about what is going to be incorporated in the release.  There is nothing on the AN site and all the beta testers appear very reluctant to even hint about what might be in there.

At this stage, as close as it is to the proposed release date, I would have thought they would be ramping up the publicity, if not sending out samples to the tech sites at least putting out some information.

This lack of information is disturbing to say the least and brings back memories of the eCS debacle.   Yes, they are a small company but if they still haven't got everything ready by now it doesn't say much for the future.

El Reg has a love/hate relationship with OS/2 for some reason and always has.

There is also the problems that IBM are having at the moment with the culling of staff by having them congregate in central offices rather than working out in the field, the problems with the Australian federal government projects that went pear shaped and its outsourcing of a vast number of jobs to India.

At least they did an article on Arca Noae planning to bring out an updated OS/2

Utilities / Re: PCL6 Printer driver
« on: April 04, 2017, 11:26:06 pm »
Thanks everyone.  One of my people found our CD cache of PA files and has been testing the drivers in her spare time.

Although non of the IBM drivers specifically mention PCL6 it does seem to fall back to PCL5 without too many problems.  A few more tests, mainly involving this printer working over the network, and we may have a goer.

I have just had a look at this thinking I might be able to update our systems.

I unpacked the RPM and had a look at the files to see if they could be transferred to the standard gs directory structure.  They can, but, as usual there are other DLLs required.

Now I need to find jpeg.dll, lcms22.dll, cupsim.dll and cupc.dll.  I assume the last two are to help with integration into cups printing but the question is which versions of all those.

Maybe you need to check if you have those DLLs in your libpath.

roberto,

Just move it out of the 'Startup' folder then it won't be loaded.  In fact I don't think it is needed unless you have a usb printer connected to your computer.  Also, it is unlikely that usbdrv216 would be the cause of your problem.

Tom,

We have two usbmon.exe files on our boxes.
c:\os2\usbmon.exe (19,477  25-18-05) is as you say the usb printing monitor.
c:\os2\boot\usbmon.exe (51,233  10-09-04) is the monitor checking when usb removables are attached or removed.

Both of them are started from the 'Startup' folder.

Yes, you are right, so in the example I have only put the activation one by one to not overload the computer.

That is OK while running but on start up the boards firmware activates ALL of the relays at once.  This is where the problem lies because when doing that it tries to draw too much current from the USB port.

All you need for a power supply is one of the 5 volt 1.5 or 2 A phone or tablet chargers which is what we used with a similar board (we made a USB to concentric plug cable to do the job).
