Programming / About somFree
« on: March 13, 2024, 02:54:13 am »
Hello

I just noticed that the somFree project was updated on 2022.
somFree is a portable clean-room implementation of IBM's SOM. Includes DSOM capabilities with CORBA IDL and IIOP

The project list the completeness record here:

I have the naive dream to eventually see if something from this project can be used on OS/2 to replace some IBM close source components, or even if WPS can be run over some kind of open source version of SOM. But I don't have the skill to asset if something can be done with somFree for out platform.

Any comments if this can be useful ?

Applications / Scroll-able Command Line Window
« on: January 26, 2024, 10:02:05 pm »
Hello

Maybe this is very basic but I don't know how to do this.

How can we have a Command line window that is scroll-able? that means that you can scroll back and see all the stuff that passed by on the commands response that is gone.  Is there a way to do that with 4OS2 ?

Applications / OSFree Components Under ArcaOS
« on: January 23, 2024, 10:57:46 pm »
Hello

The "The last nail in OS/2's coffin" forum thread and Digi's comment about OSFree, revived my interest on replacing some more old IBM OS/2 binaries for open source ones.

And OSFree produced some binaries that I want to test under ArcaOS. Now with Virtual Machines (VirtualBox) it make it easy to test, break things and recover back the VM if something goes awfully wrong.

I want to start first with the "osfree-snapshot.zip" from 2002. It has some .exe files like attrib.exe, ansi.exe, etc. that I want to test. And later I will move on to the 2019 ISO image they have.

I would like to :
- Test the binaries.
- Confirm that the source code is on the repository
- Confirm it is under a recognized open source license.

Hardware / OS/2 for Industrial Use
« on: January 16, 2024, 07:48:56 pm »
Hello

Just a friendly reminder that I like to collect information on how OS/2 is used in industrial machinery.

I share my findings with all of you here: https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/OS/2_Related_Industrial_Machinery

Please, if you know any other Industrial Machine that uses OS/2, please let me know.
Pictures of the machine, pictures of any special card it may use, software screenshots, catalogs, manuals are welcome.

What is kind of awesome is when we try to replace only the PC part of this machinery with a modern PC and maybe with ArcaOS. Depending on the machinery it is challenging to try to find a PCI card that may replace an old ISA one. Sometimes is possible, sometimes not.

Programming / Git push to Github issue.
« on: December 23, 2023, 02:20:14 am »
Hello

Since Github changed to the doble autentification factor, or maybe earlier, I had not been able to "push" (upload) code changes to the github repository.

I get this issue:

Quote
[E:\DEV\5TRYING\DOCS-IDEAS-WARP-Martin-s-Docs]git push
Username for 'https://github.com':
Password for 'https://martiniturbide@github.com':
remote: Support for password authentication was removed on August 13, 2021.
remote: Please see https://docs.github.com/en/get-started/getting-started-with-git/about-remote-repositories#cloning-with-https-urls for information on currently recommended modes of authentication.
fatal: Authentication failed for 'https://github.com/OS2World/DOCS-IDEAS-WARP-Martin-s-Docs/'

I'm lost with the documentation now. Does anybody know what I may be missing now ?

Hello

I want to discuss these for months, but I had been holding back, I don't know if it is for fear or lack of time to organize the thoughts.

Sometimes when we discuss about OS/2-ArcaOS we say: "The Graphical User Interface needs some love" (Figuratively speaking  ;D ).

1) The question would be, what features you think ArcaOS and OS/2 are lacking when referring to the GUI that you think will be useful?
- Since this is a personal option question, there are no right or wrong answers. I just want to know more about it.

2) Once you install ArcaOS or even OS/2, what utilities (or customization) do you use to improve the GUI as you like?
- For example, for me now it is must XWP 1.0.16 with xCenter big icons
- Or some others like X-It to have more function buttons on their desktop windows.

Again, this is not a discussion to impose a way to working with your machine, just to try to see what I (or We) may be missing while working with the ArcaOS GUI.

Hardware / Lenovo Thinkpad T14s 1st Gen - 20T1
« on: December 07, 2023, 02:13:25 pm »
Hello

I got my hands on a Lenovo Thinkpad T14s 1st Gen - 20T1 (20T1S0D400 - Intel i7-10610U CPU). I installed ArcaOS 5.1.0 (UEFI) and it is now booting in dual boot with Windows 11.

I'm still missing to play more with it but I found two things:

1) Trackpoint has an issue with AMouse driver. The trackpad works find and click fine. But on the trackpoint, if I click the right left mouse button, while my other finger is still on the trackpoint (possible making a light movement), it will produce a double click. Have you experienced that?

2) The machine does not has a visible ethernet port. But it recognized a Ethernet adapter (E1000B.os2)  (Intel Ethernet Connection (10) I219-LM / 8086:0D4E) on the install procedure. I installed it and it does not give any warning on boot. I have no idea if it is for an external USB-C Ethernet thing. Any ideas?

FYI: Here I'm writing the Hardware Review on the Wiki: https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Lenovo_Thinkpad_T14s_1st_Gen_-_20T1

Applications / DSSaver and XWP
« on: November 30, 2023, 06:31:04 am »
Hello.

It seems that the Doodle Screen Saver settings page does not respect the XWP font size.
I was thinking to open a ticket. Any suggestions about it?

Utilities / ArcaOS Time Sync Problems
« on: November 23, 2023, 06:22:08 pm »
Hi

I have some problems with ArcaOS 5.1 and Time synchronization. It is putting the wrong time on my machine even that I have the correct zone. ( GST5).

I get this error when I open "Clock Synchronization". (Picture attached).
I don't understand where I have to correct this problem. If I sync the time, the clock get corrected just for a little while, and after some seconds it is change to the wrong time again.

On the config.sys I have "SET TZ=GST5".

Please let me know what I'm missing to check. I guess it is something trivial that I don't know.

Applications / yum whatprovides. Does it work?
« on: November 16, 2023, 05:24:11 pm »
Hello

I guess that "yum whatprovides" is to find which rpm package provides a specific file.

For example if I try:
- yum whatprovides mmioos2*
I get:
- No Matches found
While the file  "mmioos2.h" is on the "os2tk45-headers" package.

Is it only supposed to be searching the local drive? or it also search for file in the RPM servers?
Am I missing something on the call of the command? caps?

Events / Warpstock 2023 - Presentations
« on: October 29, 2023, 03:31:49 pm »
Hello

I was wondering if you have some suggestions for OS/2-ArcaOS related presentations this year on Warpstock 2023 ?
Any subject that you want to hear about this year?

Also, if someone want to give a presentation at Warpstock, remote or in person, please let Neil Waldhauer or me to know about it.

Utilities / How to change several files "Class Type" in one shot
« on: October 10, 2023, 10:51:37 pm »
Hello

Long time ago, someone taught me on this forum to use FT to change the "WPS File type" in several files at once.
I wrote this to don't forget about it: "Changing the WPS File type on Several Files at Once"

But now I want to change the "Class Type" of several files at once. (Check the image attached to understand me better). I want to change several .lgo image files from "WPDataFile" to "MMImage" without going one by one. Is there a way?

Applications / IBM WorkSpace On-Demand on VMs ?
« on: October 06, 2023, 03:30:52 pm »
Hello

This is just a novelty question, is not that serious or something that I want to do right now. I just have the bug that I never made "IBM WorkSpace On-Demand" to run. I tried on the year 2001 with some lab machines, RIPL was kind of a problem, there were some tricks to make IBM WorkSpace On-Demand to make it run on OS/2 Wsfeb, since it didn't recognize version 4.5.... anyways, I still have this little bug.

Do you think it will be possible today with ArcaOS, and VirtualBox, to create like a virtual server with "IBM WorkSpace On-Demand" and made some other virtual machine to actually get to boot OS/2 from a the WSOD server?

I just want to hear some thoughts.

Applications / General Software Testing
« on: September 26, 2023, 09:41:41 pm »
Hello.

Does anybody has an idea what is this Ruki (Ruki.sys) driver for?
It says its developed by Alex Romanov. It is for OS/2 and it shows it loads on boots, it loads ruki$, but no idea what is for.
Or it is just somekind of demo/sample?

(Please don't try it on a production/critical machine, I don't know what it is)

Hello

I have ArcaOS 5.1.0 with UEFI mode and installed it with Panorama, on a "Lenovo Miix 510-12ISK".

I'm not able to enable DPMS on Doodle Screen saver to automatically shut down the monitor. All the options are grey without the possibility to enable it. It was the first time I installed ArcaOS (or any OS/2) on this machine, so I have no reference to know if it ever worked.

Is it something I may be missing, because I remember that Panorama was able to work with Dooble Screen Saver to shut down the monitor, if I don't recall correctly.

Regards
