Dear all,
thank you for your replies.
I have tried to make this printer work with ecups the last days, but did not get beyond the point of a blinking light, which seems do indicate some kind of interaction between my system and the printer. I realized that it was not listed as supported in the Splix files, but was hoping it might be used with a driver included for a model listed as supported?
I will try to contact Paul as suggested, hoping that he might find time to answer.

Thank you once again for your answers.

Hi there,
has anyone ever tried to use the Samsung ML2165W Printer with ECS/OS2?
I am not familiar with Cups so I was wandering if someone has tried before and might give me some information.

Hi Eirik,
sorry for the excitement I caused. I have not yet verified that an external monitor works, as right now I have no access to an external monitor (not before next week, to be correct)
What I can confirm is that I can switch of the screen of the X61 when pressing FN+F7, or that the screen is switched off. So I presumed that an external monitor would work. I will test next week.
For the records: right now I am using Panorama as my video driver.(Panorama 1.07 from Arcae Noae)
What I will try to do next is to install Snap.

Hi Eirik,
sorry for the delay.
I have done more testing on this, working with the old os2apic.psd

1. I installed snap although my video device is not supported. I could install any way without hardware accelaration. The system booted, but quite slow. And, for example, the wlan did not work anymore after installing snap.I do not know why, and I did not want to dig any further, so I reinstalled the panorama driver.

I then tested with a connected external monitor and this worked fine using the FN+F7 Keys!!!!
This was no PC-Monitor but rather a television with RGB-input, but it worked out of the box
The first impression is that the 'picture' is ok, maybe a little stretched. Until now I have not tried to change any further settings

Have you done any testing yourself

Holger

With all the testing I did when i worked at  Mensys, I remember that turning off speedstep support was required on some systems.

Roderick Klein

Roderick, yes this is what I remember too. I believe I saw this mentioned in a german forum too.
And i found this document:http://de.ecomstation.ru/projects/acpitools/BIOSTIPS.TXT
(Yes, I now it is old and concerns the older Acpi versions, but this is why I am asking concerning the new ACPI)
Yesterday I tested the x61 with new acpi, disabling the powermanagemnt in the bios and the problem concerning the temperature was gone!!!!! booting plugged  to external power supply

Holger and other people I do want to warn you if suspend resume works with ACPI that by installing SNAP this MIGHT stop working (ACPI suspend/resume).

Roderick Klein

Thank you for the warning, I am well aware of this.

People asked if I could post my ACPID.CFG but I have NO file in my \MPTN\ETC directory.

Maybe that effects the deamon compared to the default settings it falls back to the ACPI demaon.

Roderick

Yes, I happened to observe this too, by chance, (On one occasion I forgot to save my acpiD.cfg)

If this works, I should be able to use my Lenovo Thinkpad T410 in eCS when giving presentations rather than switching to the Win partition.  It would make my life a lot easier, and could be nice marketing of eCS (I teach macro economics for 250 students at the university where I work).

In this regard (and before I test), I wonder if you use Snap 3.18 (or similar) or the Panorama (1.06 or earlier) video driver?  The Panorama driver is supposed to be more stable/perform better on SMP systems like my T410, and I am therefore skeptical towards going to Snap.  The reason for asking this question is that I somewhere have stumbled over a comment that due to the way the Panorama driver works, external screen activation is not possible without some major revisions in the Panorama driver.

OS2APIC.PSD will probably support SMP in the T510. It will not support any power saving, and it the machine won't even power off, when you close OS/2 (unless it will also work with the old APM support, which is unlikely). You will need to push the power button. I don't know whether you will be able to use an external video, or not. Please, let us know.
Doug, concerning OS2Apic.psd. I can confirm that you have to press the power button after shut down to turn of the machine. (It does not work with the old Apm, or at least I get a trap when trying to use the old Apm).
Concerning power saving with OS2Apic.psd: I would say it is not completely correct to say that there is no power saving.
I have done some experimenting :
It seems that with OS2Apic the time left when running on battery in certain settings is not any shorter than when running with ACPI. Plus: I have used the cpuman.exe. This gives the possibility to automatically switch of the 2. CPU after a certain time.
Further on, as mentioned I can adjust the brightness of the display, or turn it of by using FN+F7
Or for example, if I run the machine with external power and then unplug, the brightness is reduced automatically. Running on battery the brightness can not be set as high as when plugged in.

Some experimenting may be required.
Yes Doug, same procedure as every time. But that is the fun about OS2/ECS!!.
Talking seriously: I do have the acpid.cfg, of course. But for example : Right now I booted the system, 'plugged in',temperature immediately rising to 83 Degrees Celsius, but I am using the same configuration as before, booting on battery, the temperature is constantly about 45 degrees.
So either there is a problem apart from the OS or it has something to do with........????

Quote
FN+Key does work, but only the keys that are supported by the BIOS do anything. Nobody has written the OS/2 software for the rest of them

I do not understand this remark: When booting I f.e. can use FN+END/Home to adjust the brightness
of the screen as long as the pre-boot screen is shown, I suppose this means the keys are supported by the Bios?As soon as the ECS-Blob appears the Keys no longer work!
Now I did a little experimenting: If I use the old Os2Apic.psd, Rem apm.add in config, sys, I can use the keys for brightness and the FN+ F7 Keys for switching to external Monitor?????.
(of course this setup leaves me without the possibility to observe the battery. But this configuration boots without problems, shows both cpus, temperature etc. is no problem)

Quote
I am running ACPI 3.22.06 on a Thinkpad T61
Roderick, could or would you perhaps post the settings of your acpid.cfg?.

Quote
It also of course depends on how old your batter is.
True for sure, this is an second hand machine and the battery may be old, but this is not the problem. Using the same configuration (Acpid.cfg etc) I would expect a similar behaviour in either situation. Right now the machine is plugged in, Battery at 93%,running on battery (I just unplugged
it) it shows about 2 Hours time left: I can reboot running on battery, and I am confident to have moe than 3:30 left??????

Thank you once again for your answers and your patience

Holger

I am not sure about that one. Newer machines don't seem to have a BIOS setting for that. Since using the BIOS speedstep would operate independently of ACPI, I suspect that they could end up fighting with each other (they do the same thing, in different ways)

Doug, thank you for your reply.
This is exactly why I am asking, to prevent the 'fighting as I am not familiar with power saving concepts.
But: I would have expected that the settings in the Bios (for example I have Battery Optimized and Maximum Battery ) would set the range for the cpu and that the acpi settings work within this range.
Otherwise, for what would I need the acpi speaking in terms of power saving?.

Anyone with a pointer to the 3.22.06 downloadable?
Eric, I bought this : https://www.arcanoae.com/product-category/an-products/

* Does system hang when you adjust brightness?

* Do you use Power charger 90W or 65W?

Eugene: No, the system does not hang, because adjusting the brightness by FN+Key does not work at all, I adjust the brightness when the machine starts, but before ECS boots.
The Power charger is 65W

Thank you all for your replies

Setup & Installation / ACPI 3.22.06
« on: January 01, 2015, 04:56:12 pm »
Hi there,
yesterday I installed the acpi 3.22 from Arcae Noae on my Thinkpad X61.(ECS 2.2 Beta)
First off all I would like to say thank you for the continued development of the drivers.
But I do have some questions as I have made some observations concerning Acpi that I do not understand.
Acpi works (I would say very well for the first time on this machine). I have appr. 4 hours power left when running on battery and no programs running.(WindowsXP and Linux showed up to 6 hours, but ok)
Fn-F4 starts suspend and after pushing the power button the system resumes with no apparent problems. Other function keys do not work, so I try to adjust the screen brightness when booting and before ECS is started.
The strange thing is: When booting on battery the time left (shown by the battery widget) is much longer than when booting the machine plugged in to external power supply.
If I boot the machine plugged in and then switch to battery (fully charged) mode the time shown is a max. of 2 hours 15 and the machine tends to get hot quite quickly.
Booting on battery and then plugging in works well.
Has anybody noticed the same on other machines?

Further on I have one questions concerning the Bios-Settings:

I remember having read that with the old acpi (which was for example distributed with ECS 2,1) it was recommended to deactivate the speed step technology in the bios settings. How about the new acpi?

Happy new year
Holger

...unless the new supplicant, and/or XWLAN, fixes the problem...
It seems to me the problem is either in genmac or wpa_supplicant. TTBOMK XWLAN starts the supplicant and waits for a valid secured connection before it fires up dhclient or ..... If connection is not established through the supplicant there seems to be nothing I can do in XWLAN against this problem. If someone proves me wrong I'll look into this. F.i. if it was possible to establish a connection with Pauls build of the wpa GUI but not with XWLAN this would change things. I'm sorry but currently it does not make sense to me searching this problem in XWLAN.
Hi Andi,
what I would be willing to do right now is to install ecs on the x61. As mentioned I had similar problems concerning xwlan and wpa2 on this machine too which were solved by using the gui which comes with the P.Smedley supplicant. (the device is an intell 2200)
What I would need to know: are there any log-files, output-files etc that would help to gather information.
I would install the ecs2.2 beta and the latest xwlan etc.

Regards

Holger

Hi Andi,

Quote
I tried with the 2.2 Beta, and I even tried the GUI included with the build of P. Smedley. This is what worked on my X 61 finally.
So I think the X61 should work with xwlan3.12(beta) too. Did you try it?

Did you by any chance search 'gmane.org.netlabs.genmac.user' list if this was discussed earlier?

On the X61 I tried with the 3.12 beta ( I believe, but right now I installed Linux Mint on the x61).
What happened was: sometimes I could connect, mostly not. I then tried the GUI which comes with the wpa-supplicant form P. Smedley. This helped
on the x61, I could establish a connection everytime I tried.
And I did search on gmane.org:
I found this: http://news.gmane.org/find-root.php?message_id=100.f0840d00e23d4d4f.014%40telus.net

Hi all and thanks for your replys.

Boris
:
Hi Holger,

eComStation 2.1 is quite outdated, and the Wi-Fi stuff included with it is outdated either.

I know that 2.1 is outdated, but I have tried all alternatives you mentioned (wpa-supllicant etc)and the result remains the same. I tried with the 2.2 Beta, and I even tried the GUI included with the build of P. Smedley. This is what worked on my X 61 finally. I tried with the Genmu which list the Intel 2915 too, result was the same,

Just tested my R52 and it could not connect with WPA2 too. WPA works. With WPA2 wpa_supplicant says 'Could not get SSID from driver'. No clue if this is the problem or what else goes wrong. The same with my T42p.

After setting Access Point 'Cypher Type' from 'Auto TKIP/AES' to 'AES' now it works with the T42p (Intel 2200). But NOT with the R52.
Yes, this is the same message I see when trying to connect

Hi Martin
thank you for the reply.
Yes, the adapter works fine with genmac, out of the box when installing ecs 2.1.
The only problem is wpa2. I can connect to my wlan when setting the encrpytion to wpa.
I had posted earlier concerning this problems on my r52 and am x61, but until now I was not able to solve the problem on the r52, so I was wondering if perhaps the 2915 does not work with genmac regarding wpa2 encryption.
