Setup & Installation / Re: Virtual memory, a curious phenomenon
« on: February 07, 2023, 06:27:00 am »
Hi roberto,

Without knowing what USB stick you are using there can not be any real comments made - not all USB sticks are made equal, some are better quality than others.  I have no problems copying a 2.7 GB ISO file to or from a USB stick in less than 2 minutes on one stick but it takes 4 minutes on another.

When you do tests you should give all the information about the test, make and model USB stick, imf you tried the same test with another brand of USB stick, What is the hardware for the USB- is it native mode or a pass through from a USB v3 controller, and so on.  All those things make a bigger difference to copy speed than messing about with the config.sys settings.

Hi Andi,

I'm English and like you I don't understand what he is rabbiting on about.  I also don't see what he is trying to gain with all the messing about he does after all 'if it works why change anything' is the rule I worked under before my retirement, nearly 30 years ago, and still do today.

I would be nice if he explained what he is trying the achieve but that seems to be some nebulous goal without any real reasoning.

Hi Martin,
I fit in your list at number one although until I retired I was also in number 3 on your list.  I still use OS/2 every day but also use Linux for a firefox browser (v 86.10.0 esr) when ny ancient firefox for OS/2 doesn't open some of the web sites.

I do agree with you about accepting all points of view but reserve the right to be grumpy about some comments.

Thanks Dave.  Why didn't the Arca publicity person say that?

Hi Dariusz,

My copy of Kompozer runs as it always has since I installed it - v0.8b3 and I work on the principle if it isn't broke don't fix it, but then I never chase the latest and greatest and never rub the RPM/YUM updater which might be the answer to your problem.

Hi Martin,

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear.  My question was about running that board in UEFI mode - I have proved it works in compatibility mode.  Yes, we have to wait but nothing appears to be happening after all the hype we were given at Warpstock which is why I said they need someone running their publicity that can report on this forum - they seem to be running everything on a shoestring which is not good for the future.

Hi David,

Right from the beginning of ArcaOS I offered to test anything they wanted but got a cold shoulder about it so now if it works of if it doesn't I just grumble about it here.

Thank you Martin BUT it still leaves the question - will it run on my MSI B550-A PRO board with a Ryzen 3 Pro 4350G processor (third Generation)?

It would also be good public relations if one of those working on actually responded here and gave us some idea of their testing protocol.

Sorry I can't say anything about Intel processors, haven't used them since AMD came out with the 486.

All my computers have various iterations of the AMD Ryzen processor now which I assemble/build myself.  The top of the range for me is an MSI B550-A PRO board with a Ryzen 3 PRO 4350G.  I also have a couple of ASRock B450 PRO 4 with Ryzen 3 3200G.  All of them drive 1920 x 1200 HDMI monitors.  At the moment I have set the UEFI bios to compatibility mode and everything works well.

I just hope that official version 5.1 get released soon.

You mean there is an actual version  and it's not just wishful thinking.  We have been hearing about it for so long that I, for one, can't help wondering if it is just pie in the sky.

In that case he should have tried it on OS/2 v 2.1 and a 486 based computer.

Sorry but I can't understand those living in the past and thinking OS/2 is the past.  With that attitude it will never go forward and IBM should open it up so that others can take it forward even if they dropped it because of pressure from MS.

Having watched the video I have to ask why use Word-perfect or even attempt to install it?  I also get the impression that he doesn't really know what he is doing  because of flapping the mouse pointer all over the place and moving windows for no reason.

I very much doubt that it will cause anyone to try OS/2 ArcaOS.

Hi Dariusz,
Have you considered creating two partitions on your new enlarged SSD leaving your boot partition at 200 Gb (which is excessive for a boot partition, mine is 2 GB with over 1 GB still free) and putting tools, programs, etc on the remaining partitioned space?

Hi Andi,
Sorry to hear of your misfortune but it was rather foolish to let win 10 anywhere near another OS.  I have a lone salvaged PC that has win 7 on it because a data logger I use only has a win interface.  I have been given a couple of laptops one of which had win 10 installed (lenovo ideapad) and the first thing I did was to kill win and install Linux mint.  I am thinking I might install ArcaOS if they ever release the UEFI version.

I have also had several friends bring their laptops with win 10 installed as an update that messed up everything they had there for me to fix.  I am dreading a rush of win 11 machines because I know of several laptops (HONOR MagicBook 16 and others) appeared as Christmas presents.

Hi JTA,

I have been running OS/2 on real hardware since I got version 1.20 in 1989.  Today I run ArcaOS on real hardware MSI B550-A PRO motherboard with a third generation AMD RYZEN processor.  On my local network I have a few more OSs each for a reason, Linux Mint for its Firefox browser, Win 7 as an interface to a data logger ( said data logger won't run on vBox or any other virtualization because it requires real hardware ).  I can also display what each OS is doing on my main 28 inch monitor via a 4k USB KVM switch. backup goes to two NAS boxes every night.

That basic layout has been running without problems for the last 15 years and does everything I ask it so why change.
