Setup & Installation / Working ArcaOS 5.0 in Virtual Box 5.0.30
« on: May 29, 2017, 12:55:29 am »
I have been trying to install ArcaOS 5.0 and ran into issues with it detecting the following:

- Detected Sound driver (UNIAUD) did not work.
- Did not detect Intel Built in Network card (eCS 2.1/2.2 did detect)
- Plugged in network card that does work in eCS 2.2 and prior versions did not work.

Next I tried to install in Virtual Box and after a few tries I got sound and network working:

VirtualBox (Windows) 5.0.30 is what I have.  (I will try this on VBox for OS2 later).

General
- Operating system - Other OS/2

System
- Base Memory 2000 MB
Acceleration VT-x/AMD, Nested Paging

Audio
- Host Driver Windows DirectSound
- Controller ICH AC97 (This is what ArcaOS Needs)

Network
- Attached To: Bridged Adapter
- Name: Realteck PCIe GBE Family Controller
- Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (8254OEM) - (This is what ArcaOS needs)

Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS install - can't create partition
« on: May 29, 2017, 12:38:48 am »
In order for me to install eCS and ArcaOS on the same box, I ended up unplugging the Windows drive (Master) and then added a second drive I had  lying around and installed (both eCS prior and later did the same for ArcaOS on a 3rd drive).  I also had a FAT32 partition to share some data when booting between OS's.

After I got ArcaOS installed.  Then I plugged the SATA cable back to the Windows drive.  Windows 7 booted fine.  To get to the other OS's I used the BIOS boot manager to select the other drive.  This works fine but it is an extra step to boot to it.

I don't know if it is possible to load Air-Boot onto the Windows drive because the only way I know how to install it is through the ArcaOS volume manager and that wont do anything with the Windows drive.  If there is another way to install Air-Boot through the Windows side, then maybe that would work to boot to Windows and the other OS's.  When I boot to the second drive, AIr-Boot does scan all the drives and it will show the Windows drive.

Once you get to the point of actually doing the install, you may run into issues recognizing sound card and network card.  Seems like less of these cards are recognized in ArcaOS and an older network card that works on eCS 2.2 does not work in ArcaOS (and this particular card caused the WinOS2 to fail to start.  Removing that card from the configuration fixed WinOS2 issue).

Its been a while since I re-used an old PC with spare drives.  The last time I did this was with EIDE drives.  With lots of spare drives, I did install ECS with different partitioning schemes so I know which one I want when I get ArcaOS.  I dont know if ArcaOS will handle larger drives better or not complain about partitioning other OS's do.

I tried today to install and pic SATA drive which I did see in the ECS 2.2 Installer, but I ran into the issue with how Windows partitions the drives complaining about the end of the drive.  I remember before that when I said "fix the errors" (or what ever it says) it did not fix them so I could not put the AIR-BOOT manager from the ECS 2.2 installer.

After that I just plugged Windows drive in the first cable and then the large ECS drive on the second cable thinking I would wait a few weeks and see.  I then realized that the BIOS on this box has an option to select a drive to boot and with this I can boot between Windows and ECS 2.2.

Pressing ESC at boot up isn't that bad.  I may try swapping the cables and putting AIR-BOOT on the ECS drive and then add windows and see if that works but for now this solution is doable.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi David, What type of MB? Some MBs have more then one SATA controller, possibly Dani only supports some of your SATA plugins, have you tried others, assuming there is more then 2 on the MB?
Have you looked in the BIOS to see if there are different ways to configure them? Some newer computers (most?) need the AHCI driver instead of the Dani driver. If you have the AHCI driver, order in config.sys can matter.

Hi Dave,
This is a 7 year old HP.  The MB does have 4 plugins.  When I plugged a drive to position 2, the installer had problems seeing that drive.  So, I plugged it into the first position just to see if it would install. It did install and I had 2 partitions that both booted as long as they were on the same drive.

When I plugged in another drive, Air-Boot detected it and displayed all the partitions, but attempting to boot would hang once it got to the DANI driver, so it seems that is probably what is wrong. I guess I should try installing with the AHCI driver instead.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Did you use DFSee to setup the additional drive and give it the LVM information?

Did you install win 7 in a single partition or did it do the normal install and have a small hidden boot partition?

Both of those things can cause problems when trying to boot multiple OSs.  I don't know about air-boot, never used it, but bootmamager does need to know which partition has the OS boot information.  If your win 7 has the hidden partition that could change the drive letter assignment and so cause problems with OS/2 finding the files it need to complete the boot process.

Ivan,
I used LVM from the installer.  This is a 7 year old HP and I attempted to leave the original drive with Windows 7 on it.  I wanted to plug a second drive in but LVM had problems reading that drive when it was in the second position (total 4 SATA drives on the MB).

I then plugged the drive on the first position and was able to install two installs of eCS 2.2 along with the AIR Boot.  Later when I plugged in other drives, Air boot saw them but when booting any of the OS's it would hang when getting to the DANI driver. Seems like it is this that has the problem.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Storage / Question about SATA drives
« on: February 05, 2017, 11:04:59 pm »
I am running into a strange issue when I attempt to add a second SATA drive.  I have been using OS/2 since Warp 3 and for years have been setting up systems booting to OS/2, Windows and Linux on the same box. More recent versions of operating systems seem to be more picky about what partition they get installed on.

On this particular box it had a single drive on it with Windows 7 on it and I first attempted to add a second SATA drive to install eCS 2.2 for now and later install ArcaOS 5.0 on it.  When I attempted to pick the drive to install the OS, the LVM would not recognize that drive.  I then unplugged the cable from from the Windows 7 drive and plugged it into a 500 Gig SATA drive and I was able to install it successfully.  In the past, eCS didnt seem to care that the drive moved to a different position.

This time, when I attempt to plug the Windows 7 drive in or if I add first SATA with the eCS (with Air-Boot) and a second blank drive, the boot hangs when it gets do the DANI driver.  I am thinking that perhaps that driver is older and the issue may go away when I get ArcaOS.  Is there an update to the LVM or one of the DANI drivers that might solve this?

thanks,
Dave

Setup & Installation / Re: Need Virtual Box 1.6.1 additions ISO
« on: January 07, 2017, 07:40:28 am »
Nothing appears to happen (see below)

[c:\]yum install sqlite

[c:\]yum list

Yum (anything) results in c:\ and no messages.

Does anyone know where I could find the VirtalBox 1.6.1 additions ISO?

I would use VirtualBox 5.0.6 for OS/2 however the yum installation is complaining about missing module "No module named _sqlitecache".  I will try installing 5.0.6 once I get ArcaOS 5.0 but was hoping I could get the additions for 1.6.1 now.

thanks!

Networking / SOLVED: eCS 2.1 Guest in Virtual Box

It must have been something corrupted with the configuration file for that VM.  The other VMs are still working as well.

Thanks again.

Making progress....

I recreated a VM and used the existing virtual hard disk.  Now, I am getting an IP Address with DHCP.  The IP address assigned is 10.0.2.15 which is from VirtualBox DHCP server.  I'm not able to connect to my lan or outside.

I'll do some more checking.

I have 9 other OS's installed and networking does work.  They all use NAT so it should work for eCS as well.

Now, I got an idea to create another VM and booted with the 2.2 Demo disk.  The first boot seemed to hang reading a "nif" file.  After that I tried changing from the default NIC to Intel PRO/100 MT Desktop and that did connect with the eCS 2.2 demo disk.

Maybe there is something wrong with the configuration of the VM itself.  I will try removing the VM but not the files and then recreate it from scratch. Whatever it is, its something very unusal.  I'll keep poking around.

Do you think that the there are some updates to the NIC drivers that the 2.2 demo disk has that might help?

thanks,
David

Martin,

Thanks very much for the reply.  So far everything you have explained is what I have.  I did go back and reinstall again and I think I got closer. This is the status of lan0 now:

ifconfig lan0
lan0: flags=b863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,MULTICAST,BRIDGE,SNAP,LOOPBRD>
METRIC 1
INET 192.168.1.4 NETMASK 0Xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255

This seems like its up.  The network status of the machine shows data going out but nothing coming back (number of bytes).

There is a network settings (global I guess) for VirtualBox that allows creation of NAT Networks that I have added Network CIDR: 192.168.1.0/24 and unchecked DHCP and Supports IPv6.

Another thought is that  for some reason something isn't connecting to the host network interface but just for the eComStation box.  Very strange.

Any ideas?

thanks again,
David

Networking / eCS 2.1 Guest in Virtual Box
« on: June 17, 2015, 05:37:59 am »
For years I have been using Virtual PC for OS/2 and Windows and able to bet sound and networking.  I have a collection of at least 25 operating systems with most of them having networking.

Recently I purchased a DELL 8700 with 32 Gig of RAM and i7-4790, 3.6 GHz processor.  It came with Windows 8 thinking I could run Virtual PC and copy the virtual machines over but naturally MS stopped supporting that and replaced it with Hyper-V.

Since I could not convert the OS's I re-installed a few with Virtual Box.  When I got to eCS 2.1, I followed the instructions I found at http://os2notes.net/os2virtualbox4.html but I cant get the networking to work.  I have tried using the PCnet-Fast III network card using the AMD PCNet Ethernet Family Adapter and that did not work although the driver did appear to load on the boot screen.  I also checked other Virtual Machines and found there was an Intel PRO/1000 Network driver with the Intel PRO/1000 Desktop and it too seemed to indicate that the driver loaded but also would not connect.

Has anyone out there been able to get the virtual NIC to work?

thanks
Dave
