Thanks Dave.
I have installed SNAP and it is working well now.

I have installed ArcaOS5 but it would only work with the GENGRADD video driver.  How can I switch video drivers?  I would like to try Panorama again, or SNAP.  Is there some forum where such questions would be more appropriately posted?

Applications / Re: Os/2 and Midi

Thanks Roderick.

Since my computer has onboard sound chip and no ISA slot I may be out of luck.

Thanks.  I appreciate the link.  I want to do more than just play MIDI files.
I am an electonic musician and I use Digital Audio Workstations, (CuBase, FL Studio) under Windows.  I want to stop using Windows completely if possible.  I see that there are Linux (Open source) equivalents of such products.
These products contain software Music synthesizers and directly access MIDI capabilities of the sound hardware.
Perhaps if OS/2 had native MIDI support, myself or someone else could port the Linux products to OS/2, as has been done with many other opensource products.

Applications / Os/2 and Midi
« on: August 12, 2016, 08:42:36 pm »
Does anyone know why OS/2 does dot support playing Midi files?
I recall that OS/2 V2 could do this.  Can anyone explain when and why this no longer works?

Yes Martin you are correct that Visual Age is no longer available as well as the other compilers I mentioned.
I have had these tools for so long that I forget that others may not.

I don't understand your comment Martin.  I use the IBM Visual Age C++ product almost every day, and it still works.
In fact I have compiled Petzolds programs with C/Set 2 in the past and that also worked.
What do you mean the compilers are too old?
I still compile 16 bit OS/2 programs with the Microsoft C600 compiler.  Family API applications work well with it, as well as PM applications.
I don't understand the age of product being any impediment to development on a platform that has not fundamentally changed since these products were new.
I have had problems with the Watcom debugger that I don't have with the VA debugger.  But its your choice.

I am a retired software developer with 30+ years in the industry.  And from my experience just about every colleague of mine needed Wil Weaton's advice.  It is not unreasonable for a patron of a software development effort to request some kind of time estimate.

I regard a curt response to any question as rude in every case.

Programming / Re: Poll: Your favorite text editor

EPM is provided with OS/2 and has many nice features.  It supports macros written in Rexx and its own native language called E.
There is a toolkint so that develpers can incorporate the EPM MLE in their own applications.  There are many extensions for EPM freely available from Hobbes.

Mr. Ed (now called MED) is very extensible and has many fine features.  You can find this on Hobbes.  It is not free but its worth the price.  I have added buttons to its toolbar that launches other programs, compilers, assembler, etc.  It supports context sensitive help.  This product seems stabilized at V1.26.  There are also Windows versions.

My personal favorite is the obsolete SPF2 product from CommandTechnology.  When I worked on IBM mainframes I would write Rexx macros under OS/2 and run them mostly unchanged under MVS.  CT no longer supports this product but I have the V 4.0.5 version.  It has served me well from the 1990's until now.  CT makes a respectable ISPF like editor for Windows but nothing for OS/2 anymore.

Thanks for all the input.  I will try everything suggested and report back.

This seems needlessly complicated.
When I enter the Homegroup command on the start menu I get a message that says there is no homegroup on this network.
When I use the net view command from a cmd line in ECS I get SYS0050.
My WORKGROUP is IBMPEERS which I use with no problem from XP.
I have been using this since the Warp days.
Thanks for the ideas.

Networking / ECS machine can not see Windows 7 drive
« on: July 23, 2015, 10:06:36 pm »
I have an ECS 2.2 beta machine, an XP machine and a Windows 7 machine on the same network.
I am sharing my ECS drives via the File-Print client.  I am using NetBios over TCP/IP.
My Windows XP machine can share drives with ECS machine.
My ECS machine can share drives with my XP machine.
My Windows 7 machine can see the shared drives on both the XP and ECS machines.
However neither my XP machine nor my ECS machine can access the shared drive on my Win 7 machine.
This is not an operational difficulty since I can always use the Win 7 machine to access the other machines, but is an asymmetry that I do not understand.

I am using several QT ports of *nix programs successfully. TexMaker and TexStudio and QFTP work well for me.  Also SMPlayer and QPDFView.
Sadly my music software demands midi support which we do not have, and there are no ports of my applications anyway.
I am agnostic on the location of files.  I used to care about such things, but not anymore.

General Discussion / Re: Haiku OS and its Niche.
« on: April 10, 2015, 04:19:05 am »
While I have never seen Kolibri code and cannot offer comment on it, I had an entire career as an Assembly Language programmer, at IBM and elsewhere, and I am amused about Sergey's comment about jumps and global variables.
I have sold millions of US dollars worth of software, world wide that was (is) 100% assembly language.  Neither jumps nor global variables are evil constructs if managed properly.  I can offer no specific opinion except about code that I have personally written.
Since I am now retired and have no more interest in programming, I wish no argument.  FYI I am the author of a withdrawn OS/2 application called Naviplex.  I did write that in C++.

Thanks Andi.

I changed the settings and the PDFs are readable once again.  I did not thing to check the settings.

I also think a package manager is a good idea.
