Setup & Installation / Re: DOS/WIN Issues
« on: August 18, 2022, 06:42:16 pm »
This is normal for OS/2 on modern machines. BIOS is not correctly emulated.

viop.sys might help for DOS/Windows full screen. Not sure where to get it.

Waiting for ArcaOS 5.1 UEFI, where both DOS and Windows will be working full screen and in a window.

Depending on how old ArcaOS version, it might be worth installing the updates. Fixes to drivers seemed to help on some systems.

USBCOM.SYS needs to be the first Device in Config.Sys so that it gets first pick of the COM ports.

NETBIOS will grab some COM ports otherwise, leaving us at COM10, which won't work with the OS/2 Dialer.

When USBCOM.SYS is first in Config.Sys, it get COM1, which works well.

Hardware / Re: Displayport?
« on: August 07, 2022, 03:27:49 pm »
I have a machine with Display port. The difference in sharpness at 1920 x 1200 is striking compared to Display port through a good Startek DisplayPort to VGA adapter. I'm overdue for an upgrade. HDMI seems to be the best option, but the world seems to be moving to USBc for video.

Even the IBM drivers work with current PCI serial cards.

What would be nice is serial support to work with PCIe cards. An active developer could get it done.

USB serial support is pretty good, so we do not really lack for solutions.

If you are trying to print from the AE editor version 1.9.8, then that is a known bug. Try a different test in that case.

General Discussion / Re: I have a problem

If you are booting Windows on UEFI, then there really isn't a solution that will work. When ArcaOS 5.1 comes out with UEFI support, then pretty much any UEFI boot manager will work.

AirBoot is a BIOS-based boot manager, as is the IBM boot manager. It would be nice if someone would make a UEFI boot manager that communicated with BIOS to support a BIOS boot manager and give us a boot manager that could boot either type of OS.

I hate it when a backup fails to restore. I'm glad you are still in business. A lot of authors lost their only copy of source code, and we miss their products.

Once ArcaOS 5.1 comes out, it will be reasonable to go back to a dual boot configuration, thanks to GPT support and also thanks to tweaks to various drivers to continue to operate on modern computers.

I use this instead. It has file transfer, chat and supports copy/paste.

Events / Re: User Meeting Cologne November, 5th 2022 confirmed
« on: June 17, 2022, 03:50:04 pm »
Warpstock is likely to meet the same weekend. I think it would be interesting to have a video link between the meetings for a get-together. Considering time zones, I think the first session for Warpstock and the last session for Cologne might work for this.

In person meetings are for people to have interactions, and I think this would make both meetings a little bit better.

Games / Re: DOS VDM - USB and Game port Gamepad support
« on: June 14, 2022, 02:26:46 am »
I haven't tried this in years, but it is a pretty nice game that ought to be cracked.

To play, use the menu Game->Players->1 and the game will start. Fire using right shift, and right control does shields or something.

Mail-News / Re: PMMail and filters - this one is not working...why?
« on: June 11, 2022, 10:08:45 pm »
A few versions ago, my complex PMMail filter ran out of space (1024 char maximum). This was fixed. I don't recall what the max length is now, but longer than 1024.

General Discussion / Re: eCS 2.2 purchase
« on: June 10, 2022, 03:27:20 pm »

1) Yeah. Once you have bought your new computer you can then check if it works with OS/2. Unless you find someone beforehand that has the very same computer and also uses OS/2. Great deal.

If you look at, I list some computers that work pretty well with ArcaOS. You don't have to buy them from me. I supply the information you would need to configure BIOS and install ArcaOS. I plan to continue this after ArcaOS 5.1 makes UEFI systems available. I expect Arca Noae to solve the video above 4 GB technical issue eventually.

Applications / New builds of Thunderbird and SeaMonkey

I see the posting of new builds for Mozilla apps. The prerequisite list looks shorter now. What compiler was used to make the new builds?

(Thanks Dave Yeo, for supporting us with these new builds.)

Hardware / Re: Lenovo Thinkcentre M73p
« on: June 06, 2022, 03:05:04 pm »
This is nearly identical to the M93p. I ran an M92p for many years and it's similar. I'm running an M920q (tiny) now. The tiny form factor M73p is quite different from the SFF and the Tower, which use the same motherboard.

If you use a DVD-RW, the tiny computers connect it via USB, so DVD Tools will not work. DVD Toys, with it's proprietary version of CDRTOOLS2, may work.

Otherwise, everything works with ArcaOS, or even with the last beta of eCS. Using the latest ACPI will make it run more efficiently with less heat.

Sound works better than most computers, but not as well as the SFF and Tower versions. There is still some hiss if you hook up good speakers.

In general the M73p lacks parts that come with the M93p. You can buy the parts cheaply from e-Bay shipped directly from China.

I only ran VGA, but the computer does work with DisplayPort. The video quality of DisplayPort is much better than VGA at high resolutions using Panorama. Some models may have HDMI, but I never tried it. (I need a newer monitor)

Applications / Re: RDP Server for OS/2?

VNC server and VNC client by Andrey Vasilkin.

The server is compatible with UltraVNC on Windows and does file transfer.
